I dont have HBO anymore

I miss:

The Wire
Rome
Deadwood
6 Feet Under
Sopranos

Clara - I agree I loved that flat in London, small enough to be happy and comfortable.  I love the episode where Jean plans her wedding and Lionel figures they can get XXX amount of people in the living room and when they look at the plan there isnt a single clear foot of space in the room.

I always felt sorry for Lionel

I just finished watching the first season of Game of Thrones on HBO.  For those that haven't seen it or read it I will not spoil the shocking event in the next to last episode but I will say that this has to be one of the best shows I have seen in a long time.  I probably should have read the book first but I am going to make sure to read all five before season 2 starts.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Star Trek. Featured the first interracial kiss that had racist southern TV execs refusing to broadcast it. Holds the record for being shown in the most countries prior to satelite TV. Spun off 4 TV series and many movies.

Best is so hard to say, it depends on the criteria and is almost always going to be subjective..

I  really really loved  The Unit  at first I thought it was too soap opera but they didn't focus on that part, it was really just to show the home front , that all these soldiers have families too. Each episode could stand on it's own but the season long story arc continued as well.  I much prefered that to 24

I also enjoyed the "Timverse" animated Justice League series and the related shows. A guilty pleasure that harkens back to the joy I remember as a kid watching the "Superfriends" though JL was really nothing like that.

The Bugs Bunny / Road Runner show is one of the most fondly remembered shows of my youth, along with reruns of Rat Patrol

The series Terriers only lasted one season but it was very good, also I loved all the Stargate series but in the end Stargate Universe may have been the best of that bunch,  it just took too long to get the story moving and people watching.

I love watching old episodes of The Rifleman and Hogan's Heroes  and The Waltons  all  totally different kind of shows.

All time: Hill Street Blues , Mash
At one time it was said that due to syndication MASH was on the air somewhere in the world at every moment.

Hill Street Blues is right at the top of my list, too.  It was unlike anything else when it first came out, and in a move hardly ever seen from a network these days NBC stuck with it despite so-so ratings because it was a critical success.  And it also gave us a young Jennifer Tilly...

Check out "the final scene explained" on YouTube.  There's a lot more to it than what you may think.  After I saw that video I realize that it was truly a work of cinematic art and found it to be highly satisfying.

I saw a written interview with Steven Bosco about the fights he had with the network over it's launch and subsequent showings.  Fortunately, he prevailed!

I still like M*A*S*H*.  It brought the reality of the Korean War, humor and sadness at the same time.  The cast was brilliant.  They could make you laugh and cry within 30 minutes.  Great show.

When I got to The Benny Hill Show while constructing my list, I started to laugh!
So I went on YouTube , entered Benny Hill and watched numerous episodes.
Went to bed at 3AM still laughing.
Need some laughs? Try it!

They came along just a tad later. Early network TV (late 40s) would come on about 4 PM in the afternoon. Very popular was pro wrestling and maybe a half hour of a commercial tuna fishing documentary. It all ended at anywhere from 10 PM to Midnight with the National Anthem and the American flag waving. Then the test tube pattern all night and day. If you stared at it you would swear it moved or that maybe they were experimenting with color. Mesmerizing.

As I recall, early in the 50's, there would be breaks between shows since they didn't have enough programming to fill all the time slots.
People would sit and watch the test pattern for hours waiting for the next show to come on. That's no joke!
My mother & I would always stand with our hand on our chest when the National Anthem would come on at the end of the day's programs.

As I recall we got our first TV in 1952 when I had just turned four.  The evening show that hooked me was Boston Blackie; I was transfixed by the car chases.  Later, I developed a 'crush' on Gale Storm and stayed up late to watch Science Fiction Theater.  The afternoons were for Howdy Doody, Captain Video, and Josie Carey (on the 'new educational' channel WQED in Pittsburgh which was the first such channel of what is now PBS).  Saturday morning's highlight was Andy's Gang/ Buster Brown

I remember it being a 'big deal' when Channel 2 went from DuMont to Westinghouse's KDKA and picked up CBS.  The ABC and NBC channels came several years later.

I've geezed enough ...

It's interesting how most of the senior citizens on the forum pick shows from the 50's, 60's and 70's as the greatest tv shows of all time.

One of my friends, a free lance writer heavily involved in the entertainment industry beleives otherwise. His thoughts  are that shows from the 50's and 60's were "forgetable garbage" and that the post  Reality show tv  (not the actual "reality" tv shows) of the past 15 years have actually produced the best tv shows of all time.
