What would be your pick for the best canned soup out there?

I would pick Progresso as the best out there. My favorites are the Italian Wedding Soup and the New England Clam Chowder.

I'll be interested to see what people have to say.

I'm hoping someone will suggest something without too much sodium.  I suspect your Progresso isn't "low" sodium.

Like most soups, Progresso is rife with sodium. For flavor, I like Campbell's Chicken Corn Chowder, Baked Potato with Bacon, Bean with Bacon.  Progresso's Tomato basil, Split Pea, and Wedding Soup.

I don't usually eat a lot of canned soup as I like to make my own. it comes in handy when I don't have time to cook though.

I too like Campbell's Chicken Corn Chowder.  I like to add a little heat to it with African Bird Pepper.

Bookbinder's lobster bisque. Add a half cup of milk; delicious! I'll sometimes add some sort of shellfish to make it even better.

When it comes to home soups, I resort to comfort food: chicken noodle combined with something like campbells chicken and rice or stars. These things happen on the days I do not care to make soup.

Normally, I make my own and let heavy herbs, spices, and flavors carry the soup instead of salt. Most of my soups have a kick that makes most sane people forget about salt. My wife is a stickler for salt, so I use it sparingly. But sea salt is good.

    I'm also a soup maker.

Many years ago I used to mix a can of Campbell's Vegetable Beef with a can of their Chili.  I don't think they make the chili anymore.  Maybe for many, many years.

I still like Vegetable Beef spiced up with Texas Pete's.

A can of Campbell's vegetable beef mixed with a can of tomato is good. Campbell's cream of mushroom(I usuall add sauteed mushrooms and onion) is one of my favorites. Usuall I only use canned soups in recipes. Homemade is always best. Just make lots and freeze individual servings.

I mix a can of Campbells Tomato Soup and a can of Swanson Veggie Broth together, heat it up, pour it into a mug, and sip away on a blustery day! a great Warmer upper!

I agree with CalifornyGuy on the Campbell's Cream Of Mushroom.

Their Vegetable Beef has been a standby for many, many years, but I think I prefer their harder to find Beef with vegetables. Seems beefier in broth flavor and maybe more barley?

I usually don't use canned soups as I love to cook at home.
My favorites to make at home are Chili, ham and 15 bean, chicken and dumplings, and good old tomato, with tomatoes from the garden.

p.s. It has finally turned blustery and cold this week so we know that old man winter is on his way. Think I'll make a pot of chili.

Can you send some of cold, blustery weather down here to the South? We're still sweltering with mid 90s down here! I'm very impatient for soup weather. I've got several butternut squash to make into soup; also love my Vegetable Burger and Amish Chicken Corn soup when it finally cools down here in North Carolina.

Pepperidge Farms used to make a fine assortment of canned soups.  Hunter's Soup and Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato Soup are two I recall, but there were many others.

I'm sure they were very high in sodium, but they were tasty.

My parents went on a cruise up the New England coast recently and sent me from Bar Harbor, Maine some locally canned chowders and bisques. Having never been to New England, would you suggest I follow the instructions implicitly or add some additionals when cooking? I don't want to mess this up.

Read the label and see what's in it. Heat some up. If it's not to your liking, add what ever to it.

Blue Crab Bay Co's. Clam Chowder with an extra can of their chopped sea clams. I dump the chopped sea clams in the pot after I take the chowder off the heat. They don't get overcooked and rubbery that way. And of course, a tablespoon of fresh chopped Italian leaf parsley and freshly ground white peppercorns.

I also like Campbell's upmarket brand's (I don't recall the name) version of Italian Wedding Soup.

I never buy Italian wedding soup in a can...the meatballs are bread crumb mush. I made it for dinner two nights ago in a giant pasta pot,,,enough for 4 to eat several large bowls...and plenty for lunch leftovers...and with fresh chop meat and a quick broth from our costco chicken leftovers,,,it was still very ,very cheap compared to if I opened up 15 or so cans of the stuff......and the taste is so far superior for anbout 15 minutes of prep time and about a half hour on the simmer. Some crusty Italian bread and wine and yiu've got a cheap treat...I prefer cans of good lobster bisque...now I'm not buying those ingredients and making that one!

I agree! I buy the condensed Snow's and add half and half plus at least two cans of Doxee CHOPPED clams (minced are too fine). A big dollop of butter and a sprinkling of Old Bay on the top. I eat the whole amount in a giant soup bowl.

The complete line of Bookbinder's Chowders, Bisques, Oyster Stew and Snapper Soups are my favorites.  The Snapper Turtle Soup leads the parade! The Bookbinder Foods Division was acquired by Silver Spring Foods Inc.;  the world’s largest grower and processor of horseradish. Silver Spring also makes very good Mustards and Wasabi Sauces. A nose curler!

I have to agree..most commercial chowders have way too few clams....i always add a can of clams to them..but then.i prefer my own chowder!  And lobster Bisque....undiluted or lightly diluted.............makes a wonderful sauce for ...um...lobster chunks..............langostinos..........or just sauteed mushrooms
