What would you do as an owner? Sat, 02/8/14 12:53 PM (permalink)
A customer with a child, 7 or eight, comes in, the kid has the flu, the parent admits it, kid is coughing and sneezing, a lot! none of the staff wants to wait on them. Other Customers are ticked, what would you do...I'll tell you what I did!

They needed to be booted out immediately!   That is incredibly selfish behavior on their part.  Influenza is very serious and KILLS many thousands of people every year.

I would, as politely and friendly as possible, tell the parents I could not serve them, and they have to leave.  I would give them some token for the future, free this or that, something, and thanks a lot, folks, really sorry, but....

....but they should know better, too!

Aren't there  some local health ordinances that might apply?  I'm just asking, cause do not know.

I definitely would not like to be there as a customer and have someone that sick come in.

You got them fixed up with food to go, didn't charge them, told them to come back again when the kid was well, gained customers for life and will reap the rewards of having all the people they tell about your kindness and hospitality become regulars.

I don't know what you did but I would imagine that it would depend on how much Grey Goose was involved.

The issue with offering them things to go is that you still need them to wait outside.  I'm guessing those customers would raise a fuss about waiting outside.  They likely wouldn't have the courtesy (or sense) to do that, ... especially given their initial behavior of not caring about anyone else's health from the get go.
I'm guessing CTF ended up having to ask them to leave, much to the delight (and health) of all others.

So, what was the decision.? What ended up happening?

That's what I would do if customer service was of the utmost importance. Please share Chewie! What did you do?

Bingo!! I did ask them to wait in their car, and your right Michael, I didn't charge them, hell flu germs on the money, I did think about that! In any case I was glad the woman didn't try to complain, if she had, I would have just tossed them, it was incredibly stupid to go into a Restaurant, under their circumstances. About a dozen Customers came up to me and thanked me.
JRP, yep I get all kinds
Lisa, pnwchef, you two have seen it all also! Did someone say Grey Goose???

I thought for sure you would put a rectal thermometer on your boot so you could kick him out and take his temp at the same time ;)

See, this is why on one of your trips between the Carolinas and the Wisconsins you need to make a little detour to Emmitsburg, Maryland.

I had a lady with a mixed drink stick it in front of her ~10 year old, put it to his lips, and make him take a drink.

They weren't too pleasant when I told them to not let me ever see that again.

Was that mom a Cheesehead? Until recently, ordering a drink for your minor child was legal in Wisconsin. It would not raise an eyebrow.

You got them fixed up with food to go, didn't charge them, told them to come back again when the kid was well, gained customers for life and will reap the rewards of having all the people they tell about your kindness and hospitality become regulars.

And This, sir, is why you should not only be restauranteur of the year, but man of the year! Way to go!

Chewy, Your right, I would never let any one person screw up the dining experience of the majority of my customers........Michael, would have given them $10 and sent them to 5 guys.......

They would get very little to eat at 5 Guys with only $10.00
Burger, Fries and a drink for 3 people is over $20.00!

                                                  JayL,

Was that mom a Cheesehead? Until recently, ordering a drink for your minor child was legal in Wisconsin. It would not raise an eyebrow.

No, not at all.  South Carolina and WAY illegal.

I wouldn't bring my child to a restaurant or elsewhere with the flu and I don't think they would want to go-- being so sick. They both had the swine flu a few years ago and laying in bed was all they wanted to do and they missed 8 days of school. One of my favorite teachers they have would come by and leave their work in the mailbox -- I thought it was funny but I didn't blame her at all.

Way to go Tom!  And yes, between you, me and pnwchef we certainly have seen it all!!!!  For the most part, customers are pretty much OK but there are some crazies out there........

I had a lady with a mixed drink stick it in front of her ~10 year old, put it to his lips, and make him take a drink.

They weren't too pleasant when I told them to not let me ever see that again.

I took the kids to San Antonio this summer, the hotel we stayed at had free cocktails all day. I ordered 3 virgin tequila sunrises. I don't drink alcohol much anymore and esp. with my son and daughter and we were sitting in the community area not the bar. We were on our second round when in walks the highway patrol (why him and not local I don't know) and comes over and asks me to come outside. He smiles at me and says he didn't really want to be involved in this but please don't let the children drink alcohol. I explained it to him and he laughed, shook my hand, patted me on the back and said God bless you and went on his way ( im sure he had already talked to bartender or someone and knew they were non alcoholic and just needed to make contact). I returned to the kids and of course had to explain it all to them. We laughed about it also. About 10 minutes later a lady walks over to me and shouts that people like me shouldn't be allowed to have children. I tried to explain to her but she stormed off. The hotel manager came over and apologized and when I told him I thought it was funny and my 13 and 14 year old were laughing, we were friends the rest of the week.
