my father was born in 1922---he liked a good hot dog on a butterered and grilled split top bun=a good natural casing dog with more butter melted on it and celery salt---and a second with Gouldens and good piccalli. He also liked to take us camping and make fish cake and beans---with white and yellow perch we caught and he filleted---or salt cid from those neat wooden boxes with the sliding top--he would serve them with B&M baked beans for either lldinner or breakfast. He would also take me to lunch with him when i worked as his helper--he loved a spot on Rte one near where the Patriots play-called the RedTop---GREAT fisherman platter or fried clams.. He was a life long Red Sox fan and last year--as he lay in bed-slowly dieing--on the 13th of Sept he told me--"Michael---ya know its all right now ----cuz they're gonna win this year ya know!" He smiled--i smiled back. Two days later, on nSeptember 15th-he slipped away peaceful--in his sleep.

Im 58---and as of next thursday--i will have been a orphan for one year. I miss him---thanks for chance to say so.

My dad was born in 1937. I'm 45. I took him to Rutt's Hut about 2 years ago and it's his favorite hot dog. Growing up in the 50's, his favorite hangout was Eagan's in North Arlington. They were sold to a CVS or Rite Aid about 2 or 3 years ago, right after I found out it was my dad's hangout and before I could take him there. A great hot dog joint that sold deep fried dogs. The same dogs served at Rutt's.

That sounds like the kind of question a young unmarried woman who wants to have children would ask if she has an older boyfriend. Think Ed McMahon's fiancee.

Sorry - didn't disclose fully - Daddy was born in 1916 and I was the fourth and a late in life child arriving when he was 45. If you do the math that makes me a startlingly attractive 44 year old. My primary mass media outlet wasn't the radio (silly!) - as a child of the 60s I watched TV. And while it wasn't a news story, I remember sitting on my Dad's lap in the den watching Ed Sullivan. Topo Gigio always got a kiss goodnight like I did and as a testiment to both of my parents (now likely hanging out at the Stork Club in the sky together) I replaced my childhood Topo Gigio puppet with one exactly like it on eBay last month. My appreciation of the sublime to the ridiculous comes from them both. Daddy's gone since 1980 and Mommy died in 1987 - it sucked being an 'orphan' at 25!

Congratulations to your Dad, Barney. I have lived on memories of my Dad passed down by old relatives. You are very lucky to have the company of your father for so long. Best Wishes to you and Youu Dad on that special day.

So glad your dad is 100. Mamaw Smith is 83 and even with a broken arm, she is getting along fine.

Dad passed away in 1987 at the age of 69. I miss him almost daily.

It makes us all realize that we are so fragile.

My father was born in 1920 in Brooklyn. He is still able to get around very good although he has become grouchy with age. He cannot understand the world today and why nobody does anything about it. He now lives in West TN. with the rest of us who moved here from Jersey years ago.

My father was born in 1928, and I'm 51. I can't see that there's any useful identifying information here at all.

The first signifigant news event I can remember is the Pirates winning the World Series. I followed that team all year; Madlock, Stargell, Parker, Garner... man, 1979 was a great year!

Dad: late 1942
Me: very late 1970

First news event I remember? 1976 bicentennial maybe, but I don't have specific memories of it, just that it was a big celebration. Other than that, later on I knew Jimmy Carter was the president, so maybe the hostages in Iran? I do remember pieces of that.

Mosca:
I remember that World Series too, but I am around ten years younger than you, and there were at least a couple of significant events well before that (I was in high school when the Pirates won; you were well into adulthood, right?). In particular, I can recall Lyndon Baines Johnson's funeral, the end of the Vietnam conflict, Nixon's downfall, etc.

You must have remembered something significant before that Series, right? (Although I agree how exciting it was!)

Uh... (gets tongue out of cheek) well, it was the 1960 series that I really remember. But even before then the first news event that I can really actually recall was going out into the yard at night and watching Sputnik race across the sky.

Daddy was born in 1925, and I came along 30 years later. He passed in 1995, exactly 11 months after Momma. They would have celebrated their 48th that August.

The first major news story I recall was the destructive and deadly Bel Air brush fire in LA back in 1960. It figures I'd be paying attention to fires at age 5. 20 years later I'd be working for that very same fire department.

Brilliant topic...who can resist talking 'bout their "Daddy"?

He was born in 1929 and was/is and will always remain the ROCK & ANCHOR in my life.

edited to add: 46, and I remember the plight of Apollo 13 as the first news story I was aware of due to an AWESOME Elementary teacher (besides Nam).

My Father was born in 1900 died 1970, and I'm 57-I think. To me age is only a number. It's my mind and body that tells me if I'm feeling old today.

Without giving away years: My Dad's 1st memory, I think, is the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. My 1st memory, news-wise, is the Iran hostage crisis. Yeah, there's a few years between us.

October 1931 died Febuary 1992 of complications of chemo for liver cancer. For the next year or so I had bad dreams that he came back from the dead and wanted his house and insurance money back.

I'm 48.

Dad was born 70 years ago today and I'll be 48 on Monday. My first memory of a news event that coalesced in my brain, was JFK's assasination. Earlier memories than that come in brief, fleeting snippets awakened by a smell or some other key that unlocks it.

But from that one moment in Dallas, the memory carousel was open for business. As I was in 1st grade only 6 at the time, I can still vividly remember the principal coming over the intercom with the announcement, teachers crying, walking home in bewilderment, wondering if the world was coming to an end. Maybe it was brief snippets of the cold war hysteria, hiding under school desks for atomic bomb drills.

TV came to the forefront in my life, as far as perceiving it as such, as we watched the news unfold (pre-CNN LOL). And since we lived in the DC area, we trouped off to stand in line at the Capital.

Hello All,
My Pop was born in 1920, and unfortunately had to experience the Great Depression when he was just a young lad, and later WWII. It had a profound affect on him, and thus had an effect on me and my brothers. Food was simple: a meat, potato, and vegetable. Duty: food on the table, clothes on your back, and a roof over your head. Late, but not too late, he learnt how to share his immense love.
I am 50, at times feeling 17 or 85.
Take Care, and Love,
Fieldthistle

I had to think on my dad, I've never been really sure exactly how old he is. 1934, I think.

Me, I'm 34.
