The verdict is in: definitely surgery, which will take place Friday some time, then about 6-8 weeks recovery. I have a family Christmas party 90 minutes north of here on Saturday, and a family party at my house on Sunday. Should be an adventure! Or something.

Actually cooked tonight, though. Diabetic penne with fake crab and lobster, spinach, and cheese sauce.

You're having surgery on Friday and then doing parties the next two days? Adventure doesn't cover it. Good luck with the surgery.

That's the plan so far, yeah. I have reserved the right to hide in my room with my drugs instead, however. Especially that 90-minute ride to my dad's house the very next day. Thank you!

Oh, Felix--if you're talking bone surgery, ouch!!!   Take it easy and baby that foot.

pnw - I love that the bacon is on both the top and underneath the burger.   Are the pretzel rolls good?

L2B, I'm not overdoing, just getting stuff done. I figure after next weekend I'm going to move from my recliner only for bathroom breaks.

Tonight I did chicken breast stuffed with bacon, spinach, mushrooms and Parmesan. Sides of Harvard beets and red potatoes roasted with butter, garlic, and parsley.

Tonight while my niece and I were out shopping and running errands, we went to iHop. I make no apologies, it was fabulous.

I had their limited time only raspberry-white chocolate pancakes. No nutritional value whatsoever, but really, really tasty.

Today was my first full day of baking (I mixed up a bunch of dough that had to refrigerate and made a loaf of bread last night), so I started some ham and bean soup simmering when I hit the kitchen this morning.

No bacon in the soup, although if I'd had some defrosted I probably would've tossed it in.

Family Christmas party at my house today: Ham, macaroni salad, sour cream potato casserole, olive penguins, my homemade cheese crackers and olive-cheese crackers with whipped garlic or three onion cream cheese spreads, little smokies wrapped in brown sugar bacon, and the obligatory collection of smoked sausage, pickles, olives and cheese. We also had either cherry or lemon meringue pie for dessert, which for some reason I *never* think to take a picture of.

Tonight was a Spanish beef stew recipe...subbing in local (from the woods) venison in place of the beef.  This is a great recipe...we've never actually cooked it with beef.  I'd like to, but it's always been with deer.  The extra fat would make it even better.

We served it in pasta bowls over a salt crusted baked potato.

That meatball sandwich looks pretty darn tasty, though!

Better living through chemistry means I was capable of cooking, so we did our Christmas dinner (and all of Christmas, complete with stockings and presents) today. Cornish hens, green bean casserole, sweet & sour red cabbage, baked sweet potatoes, my grandma's salad, steel-cut oats with onions and mushrooms, Grands Southern-style biscuits, and custard rice pudding for dessert.

We had grilled Omaha Steak... steak burger patties, served with huge yams.

Good thing we don't have any ice cream.  I could probably eat a quart of it.

Alsatian "pizza" - a dish I've wanted to make ever since I saw Andre Soltner demo it on Julia Child's program.  It was every bit as good as I'd hoped.

L2b, That looks so good!
Saturday I mad a huge pot of sauce. I used some of it to make stuffed shells. I stuffed the shells with ground veal mixed with onions, garlic, breadcrumbs, an egg and salt and pepper. Delicious!

Last night I sauteed onions, mushrooms and sliced applewood smoked chicken sausage. Tossed it with some potatoe and onion pirogi. Served it with a little sour cream. Came out really good.
