For dinner tonight I had rack of lamb in a masala, mint jelly reduction.  It was served with whole leaf spinach mashed potatoes. I wish I could duplicate it.  It was outstanding.

CC, thanks for that recipe.  It just doesn't sound right.  Cloves?  I don't think so!

I'd use a combination of california chili powder, pasilla chili powder and ancho chili powder.  I also don't think there is any chipotle powder in it.  It doesn't have any smokey flavor.

I used to use a Lawry's Goulash Seasoning package but I haven't seen it in years.

What I'd love to be able to make is Tito's refried beans.  The refried beans in the can just don't come close.

Shoot-forgot my herring this year! Bob made homemade pizza for me-he made his own dough, and we topped it with everything( anchovies included for me) It was awesome, and as I had to work and am sick with the black plague, it was lovely of him to do.I didnt make it past 8pm, but he woke me at midnight( thanks!lol!) to wish me a happy new year. And Happy New Year to all!By the way, while I dont comment much, all your dinners look and sound fantastic!

Maggi makes a Goulash seasoning mix!

No cloves. <<<shudder>>>

Goya is the brand of refried beans that I use. Some brands have a horrible smell.

The Guilt Trip. My Mother's mantra. I moved to South Jersey (working in Philly) to marry my soul mate in 2007. Mother has played every health card in the book to make me move back!
Better focus - king crab, sea scallops, shrimp and mussels in a white wine garlic broth over linguini. HAPPY NEW YEAR - great start!

Puerto Rican style Pernil. Been cooking it all day. I' ve never done a pork roast this way so I' m a little nervous. Mashed potatoes, peas and mashed rutabagas will round it out. I' ll post pics when it' s done.

I'm kind of leaning toward tomato soup and tuna sandwiches for dinner tonight. The last week of eating foods I don't normally have on an irregular basis has me completely screwed up. That may not go over big with the rest of the house, but I might be able to sell breakfast (I've got leftover biscuits, bacon and eggs).

We just finished a bowl of (cough) canned black eyed peas.

We're off to see Silver Lining with some sort of a dinner with friends.

The Wife made homemade Chicken soup for dinner tonight.
I seriously doubt you will find any Chicken soup as good as this at a restaurant!
(I'm not a fan of soup as a meal so she is making me homemade Mac/Cheese with Crab cakes for dinner!  Yummmmmmmmmmy

We had a Casino Night last night and didn't get home in time to prepare the dinner we had planned for New Year's Eve so tonight it's shrimp cocktails, grilled filets, duchess potatoes and a salad.  The champagne will have to wait for another time.  I have to go back to Purgatory tomorow.

Purgatory? About 10 or 12 days ago I had a great burger at Purgatory in Pittsburgh. I didn't know they had one in Mississippi.

Oh, wait. My burger was from Burgatory, not Purgatory. Terrific burger on a brioche bun. And they make their own potato chips.

We had a traditional French Canadian Ragout.  A thick rich stew of pork hocks and meatballs spiced with cloves, cinammon and nutmeg.  All this was served with homemade ginger beets.  I have to admit it was one of my best ragouts yet.

Thank you for the birthday wishes!  :-)

Black-eyed peas has always been the good luck tradition at my house.  Some years later, we added fish for prosperity, so we ended up having both yesterday.

I think tonight will be a variation of the Full House, a tamale and chili combo.  Tonight will be vegetarian tamales and Hoppin John leftover from New Year's.

We didn't have anything planned for tonight and couldn't think of anything that sounded good - one of those nights - we usually end up with a salad or an omelette or grilled cheese.

Not tonight - I've got a craving for something spicy  - Nacho baked potatoes topped with Cheddar, green onions, black olives, sour cream, guacamole, and salsa.  An alternative to all the holiday foods we've put behind us.

I started taking Prednisone, so...some cranberry-pecan-feta pinwheels, some cheese, some cottage cheese, a bagel with garlic-herb cream cheese, some Oreo truffles, a few cream cheese walnut cookies, the last three molasses cookies, the remains of the meat left on the chicken (the rest goes into the freezer for making stock), about a gallon of water, and some crackers.

"May increase appetite". *snort*

Yeah, it seems two months of sitting around because I couldn't walk ending in going to crutches the same week it got stupid cold made my lungs refuse to play along and breathe deeply. It's only five days, though, could be worse. In the mean time, I eat like there will be no more food. Happens every time.

Speaking of which...Now I want some of yours!

The recent Roadfood survey made me aware of pork and sauerkraut as a New Year's tradition, which I'd never heard of.  Can someone who does this please share the background of it and where it's prevalent?  Thanks!

I don't know anything about the background of it, but here in Ohio, where I first ran into it, it's a big German thing. We had it for dinner on New Year's Day. lleechef had the butcher cut her a five pound bone-in center cut pork loin roast. She roasted that and baked the fresh sauerkraut with bacon and onions. And, there are leftovers.

Apparently its a Pennsylvania Dutch/German tradition to bring you luck in the new year. My Mom was  German, and made it every year. She also made that combination several times during the course of the year, stating that one cant have enough luck.

I like to put a bed of sauerkraut in a cast iron skillet, put the pork on top and roast it.  The drippings from the pork cook into the 'kraut.  Yum!!

Mrs. Chicken and I are planning to eat at Hacienda Real in Janesville, WI tonight with a $50 gift card I picked up at half price last year.  The online reviews are generally positive and my younger daughter likes it.

Greg, your chicken soup looks exactly like Progresso right out of the can.

We eat Progresso now and then and dress it up with extra goodies.

I roasted some ridiculously thick boneless pork loin chops, served with baked sweet potatoes (butter and S&P only) and Green Giant teriyaki frozen vegetables.

I get it, but it makes me giggle when y'all from Southern California talk about it being cold.

Buffalo Pork Chops - Baked Potatoes - Salad.  We've been in the upper 20's at night and upper 30's in the day here for a while - and the 10 day forecast shows much of the same - very unusual for us.

It is of German origins, my family usually made pork roast and saurkraut or smoked sausage and kraut. It is usually found in the rust belt and heavy German populated places.

We went to Johnny Rocket's for dinner.

I didn't pay attention to prices.

Two burgers and shakes.  $31.66

The burgers came with fries and I was charged a $1 upcharge for switching to sweet potato fries.

Sharon was upcharged $1.29 for the cheese on her burger.

The burgers were good and not great, but $31???

Not sure I'd go back.

When they opened the first Johnny Rocket's here I opened the door to go in and the music (?) hit me like a two-by-four across the head. I have not tried to go back.

I threw together a bunch of stuff and called it "layered tortilla casserole" for lack of something more creative. It was darn tasty, and since it was an entire 9x13, I've put three meals' worth in the freezer in addition to what I left in the refrigerator for leftovers.

My niece chose a Korean BBQ restaurant to celebrate her acceptance in to Boston U.

It was no where near the quality of food that Park's serves, but it was still a fun experience.

It was so strange.  While the food was cooking the wait staff would come by and nonchalantly shut off the burners.  We'd just turn them back on.  I think they were trying to prolong our meal without using their gas.

The banshan offerings were meager and not good at all.

What was fun was trying to find the place at night.  I knew the name and the approximate proximity (two x's in one sentence!) but when driving at night (with my mother and Sharon in the car giving me instruction) ...when all the neon signs were in Korean, it proved challenging.

The recent Roadfood survey made me aware of pork and sauerkraut as a New Year's tradition, which I'd never heard of.  Can someone who does this please share the background of it and where it's prevalent?  Thanks!

It is of German origins, my family usually made pork roast and saurkraut or smoked sausage and kraut. It is usually found in the rust belt and heavy German populated places.

My partner grew up in Peoria Illinois and I grew up 45 miles west of Chicago when it was rural out here. I never had this, but loved it  when my partner first made it for me. But,  now my partner is vegetarian and using tofu kielbasa, I know you won't believe it, but it tastes the same. We add lots of kraut and caraway seeds.

I threw together a bunch of stuff and called it "layered tortilla casserole" for lack of something more creative. It was darn tasty, and since it was an entire 9x13, I've put three meals' worth in the freezer in addition to what I left in the refrigerator for leftovers.

This looks delicious!!!
