I keep meaning to order some maple syrup from Michigan.  I've tried NH and Canadian (and Vermont, of course), but I hear Michigan is a big producer, too.  If you have any recommendations, please let me know.

It's been forever, but I do have a suggestion for you! The place I get honey and preserves at the farmer's market also does maple syrup, which I had completely forgotten about since it's been ages since I've gotten it anywhere other than the nature center (his is really good, I just like to support the nature center). They don't have a website, but I talked to him and he said he'd be willing to ship whatever you want, in a flat-rate box. He was out of business cards and for some reason it didn't occur to either one of us that I could write down his email address, but this is the company if you want to call. He said to mention you found out about him through the Holland farmer's market if you order. I also asked my niece to grab a business card with his email address next time she's there, since that might be easier.

I have been looking forward to this for months. Cheddar Bacon Asparagus Strata, made with garlic sourdough bread (from the Amish bakery at the farmer's market), fresh asparagus, red bell pepper and bacon (also from the farmer's market). Served with a radish salad (thin-sliced, tossed with lime juice, orange juice and pepper). I wish I wasn't full...I want more.

I forgot to defrost anything so I have no idea what dinner will be.

I'd like a serving of that strata!

What is exactly that "fine wine"?

jaylhorner

"Fine" wine?????????????????

Sure. A very rare vintage. It's so hard to find I buy it by the gallon just to make certain I'll have some available.

Lemon-Ginger salmon with roasted lemony asparagus. Both recipes were new, and both have potential...but both needed tweaking. Thank goodness the salmon was free and the asparagus was cheap!

Bar hopping in Palo Alto:  beef empanadas, soft tacos with chicken and carnitas, warm Napa cabbage salad with bacon, blue cheese, and red wine vinaigrette, and seared scallops with grits and bacon jam.

Mar - I hope the tuna salad showed up!

I made smoked salmon hash, finished with a little roasted chili oil.  Not perfect, but it's a good start.

L2B...  It was banana cream.  I've heard that Magnolia Bakery is famous for their banana cream pudding which I"m assuming is similar.

When I was checking the internet to see if there were any banana pudding recipes that stood out rather than my old pudding, banana and wafer recipes and most of what I saw was the Magnolia Bakery recipe.  (Which I did not use)  That's why I was excited to try this pie.

The filling was devine.  The whipped cream, slathered on top was pure heavy cream and I felt it needed something... a spoon!

I'm not a crust person so I left most of it.

I'm back after what feels like 800 years of working! Not that I'm off tonight, but we got catering instead of having to stop for fast food for once. Marinated beef tenderloin, roasted carrots and cauliflower, braised spring vegetable mix (sweet peas, pea pods, asparagus, broccoli), coconut shrimp soup, salad, and a key lime tart for dessert.

felix - coconut shrimp soup sounds fabulous.  Looks like the key lime tart was its natural color.  We've been playing with that on another thread, so I wanted to check it.

mar - I just looked up Magnolia Bakery's banana pudding--looks very easy and very tasty!

Saturday was lleechef's birthday and we cooked six lobsters. We ate four of them and had two still in their hard red suits to be undressed and turned into hot lobster rolls.

L2B...  Were you surprised that they use instant pudding?  That's why I didn't use their recipe for Mother's Day.  I was extremely leery.  Now I can't wait to make it!

Mar - Honestly, after reading the ingredients in some of the national prize-winning pie recipes, nothing really surprises me anymore.  These products save a lot of time, their stability can reduce the chance of failure, and with a little doctoring up, the results are pretty tasty, as you can see!

CC - Your artistry was awesome, although possibly under the influence of one of those off-season Shamrock shakes.

Tonight I made a very humble, old fashioned comfort food.  American chop suey, sometimes known as goulash.
Here's what I did-
Sauteed a little onion in a dutch oven, added 1 pound of ground beef.  When the beef and onion were cooked I added one can of petite diced tomatoes with green chiles, one can of mushroom stems and pieces.  It did not look like enough sauce so I added (OMG) a few squirts of Catsup.  Then a dash or two of Lea & Pearins and a splash or two of red wine.  I let all that simmer and reduce while I cooked about a half a box of elbow macaroni.  I drained the macaroni, added it to the sauce.  I turned off the heat, covered the pot and let it sit so the macaroni absorbed the sauce.  Man was that GOOD.  And there is plenty for lunch tomorrow!!

Sounds delicious Chris! My husband makes a version of that which he calls Roman Chowder. Something he grew up with in Louisiana. I have to ask him, though, which side of his family it came from. He is from Louisiana but his Maternal Grandmother was from the Boston area.

I had an entire day off! That hasn't happened in about eight years, I think. So...potato and smoked sausage casserole. The first time I threw it together I actually took notes, so I can make it over and over again and it's always the same. Which is darn tasty.

Thank you both! It's one of my favourites. Here's the recipe, if you want... http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/potato-and-smoked-sausage-casserole-7633

Tonight I went simple. Broiled chicken thighs with a Tuscan seasoning blend, creamy grape salad, deli coleslaw and a huge bag salad with cucumber ranch dressing.

Someday I am going to find myself in LA again, and I am going to eat at Tito's. In fact, I almost called my ex to see if he felt like visiting for a day or so and I was going to route myself home from Tahoe via LA so I could go.

Tonight I did an asparagus and red bell pepper frittata, with feta and cheddar. And the inevitable bag salad, since they're only good for about 36 hours after you open them.

Asparagus is alive and well in mid Wisconsin! Stopped in a small town after my mini trip with friends-great antique, green house and restaurant place. Fresh asparagus for sale at the door, and a wonderful asparagus soup on the menu. Soup was awesome!

Last night we had lamb chops on the grill. I usually buy the rib chops but two of my kids are really not fond of the fat and sinewy parts(the parts the rest of us love them for!) These loin chops were on sale so I went for it. I put them in a zip lock bag with fresh thyme, rosemary. olive oil, chopped garlic and black pepper. I laid them our on a platter before grilling and sprinkled them with salt.

I was careful to only grill them to a medium rare. They came out great and everyone enjoyed them. Can't say they were better than my favorite "lamb lollipops" but I definitely make them again!

Considering that we are going up to Bucyrus (which, as everyone knows, is the Bratwurst Capital of the World) this week we don't have to concern ourselves with depleting the bratwurst inventory at home. Thus, tonight we're having brats simmered in beer with sliced onions before being grilled. There'll be corn on the cob and macaroni salad, too.

Dessert was a CC Brown Hot Fudge Sundae.

It was lacking.  Not sure why but the vanilla ice cream seemed bland.

That's the other choice in the upper right... trifle or however it is spelled.

Last night's dinner:

The menu which was a fixed meal with two choices.

Where was I?

Another of the appetizers:  (Wolfgang's signature pizza)

Followed by the soup:

Then salad which may have been my favorite dish:

These multicolored beets were either roasted or boiled and pickled in some sort of vinaigrette with minced walnuts (I think)  Served with dabs of blue cheese dressing.

Last night's main coarse:

It was excellent and perfectly done.

The steak was coated with crushed black pepper and other spices prior to cooking.  I am drooling thinking about it!

Followed by dessert.  I'm not sure which part of it I liked best:

My niece had the fish:

It's a chain and it's mediocre Mexican food and it's basically sort of around the corner.

We had dinner at El Torito.  We love watching the seals following the fishing boats while we're eating.

I had steak, shrimp and chicken fajitas.

Then there's the drinks.

Tonight we celebrated my nephew's 17th birthday.

We had grilled fish tacos and basil chicken sausage from Trader Joe's.  The sausage looked like pickles on the grill and I was sure I wouldn't like them.  I loved them!

There were grilled mushrooms along with those sweet peppers.

After dinner my nephew left to go see an R rated movie with his friends.

One of our butchers at the farmers' market sells pork chip steak - like the cut used for Philly cheese steaks but pork instead of beef. Threaded it on skewers and grilled brushed with a spicy peach sauce.

Ruby, the pork skewers look great, it may be a good idea here for this weekend. I may change the pork to chicken and the peach sauce to Orange glaze................Thanks for the idea...............pnwc

Mar, I can't think of any other food that gives more flavor than sausage. Nothing like spices, fats, and meat mixing together.................

Bill, it would be added fat in this instance because they were chicken sausage.  I usually don't like things overly seasoned with the green herbs, but I must say... delicious!

RubyRose...  I was going to do burgers for the 4th of July but you may have swayed my mind.  Those look quite good.

I've never heard of pork chip.

I'm on vacation, so I'm a little slow. This was Wednesday's dinner, at the Great Basin Brewing Company in Reno. Cuban sandwich with garlic fries, and their Bitchin' Berry ale.
