Had a fine breakfast of Baked Beans and toast!

On a side note cilantro is oh so good and good for you!!!!! I can never figure out the anti-cilantro crowd and their absolute and pure hatred of it.

Breakfast today was a grilled cheese and pickle sandwich.  And a pudding cup.  No, I'm not pregnant!

I sorta had a cheese sandwich wrapped in warm naan bread...with an Indian cereal that included savory seasonings. That was so unattractive I didn't take a picture...but surprisingly good.

This particular herb has an unpleasant taste for a some folks, me being among that group

To me, it tastes like dirty soapy dishwater

That doesn't make me hate the herb, but if I am getting a dish that includes it, I will ask that it be left off

Beautiful sandwich! What type of cheese?

Ok...let's pretend this isn't the box...

It was brutti ma buoni (ugly but good) outta da box.

Jarlsberg cheese.  Organic French wheat bread from Beckmann's, a great local baker in Santa Cruz.  http://www.beckmannsbakery.com/  Interestingly, I met those guys at the pie gig in 2011 - they won 1st place in the commercial division for their pecan pie.  It's delicious...

I love savory porridge!  I've mostly had congee/jook where you can put a wild selection of toppings on it.

I see that brutti ma buoni is also the name of a type of cookie.  You're expanding my knowledge of Italian!

Soon...you'll be talkin' with your hands!

Good for them! That's the category that includes Publix...right?

Yep--Publix, Bakers Square, Village Inn, Norske Nook, Cyrus O'Leary, Bonert's Slice of Pie (one of my new favorite commercial producers), Winn Dixie, and a quite a few more.  Beckmann's makes very good breads and rolls which are distributed widely locally, and sells its breakfast pastries and pies only at farmers markets.

That's very impressive!

Publix HQ is an hour away in Lakeland FL. If there's any advantage to home field in terms of organization and infrastructure...they'd have it.

Oh, to be able to get a hard roll here. But, we should be in Connecticut in a week or so and that's hard roll heaven.

Have a lovely time Mr. Hoffman!

l had to go to the Bakery today to remind them to crank-out the donuts tomorrow. Sooo I decided to have "jelly cake" for Breakfast. Jelly cake puts most other jelly donuts to shame. You're my jelly donut...jelly cake!

Anybody tried Burger's Smokehouse Bacon?  Try the thick sliced.  I made a pound of it and 6 slices = 1 pound.  It's really thick, but really good and produces very little oil/grease.

I had a slice of pizza focaccia from a slab I got at Liguria Bakery, right across the street from Mama's in SF.  (Had to do something while we waited to get into Mama's...)

Indeed...it was very purpley. I saw it sitting way in the back...and requested it instead of the orangey one. It was soooo good...a few of the other less sparkly sprinkles attached themselves along for the free ride.

My dad used to love all those chocolate snack cakes.  I never was a fan of them, especially the chocolate-paraffin coating.   However, I've had lots of those pies and the snack cakes that had frosting on them--I could eat anything back in those days and never gain an ounce...

C'mon Breakfast...

Breakfast today started in Phoenix Arizona.

CC sees See's...

Si Si!

El Bravo is a popular Mexican restaurant in Phoenix. El Bravo has a kiosk at Sky Harbor airport....America's friendliest airport.

The flagship location supplies this location with Mexican treats...daily.

It was early (Breakfast) so there was a limited choice as far as menu items. I went with a carne asada burrito and it was delicious. I also went with it to the plane...and enjoyed Breakfast over the Grand Canyon...

The hot sauce was not hot and heavy on the Mexican oregano & black pepper...

It was an excellent Breakfast. The tortilla was as large as a queen-sized comforter...so no lunch today.

With Phoenix at like 119, See's must be serving hot chocolate!

The burrito sounded good, and I bet your neighbors on the plane smelling it on the plane were wanting it!  But yeah--that tortilla looks way wrong for the amount of filling.

It was a small plane....

I was in-charge of the emergency exit door. So I snacked on the filling and reserved the tortilla in the event a parachute might be needed.

Sunday means donuts!

A maple-glazed cinnamon bun almost as big as the cake box...

Cinnamon crunch donut...

Glazed Old-fashioned (west coast version) I'd be in big trouble if these were found in NJ or NYC...

Plain but nothing plain about it...

Vanilla with sprinkles...

Chocolate with sprinkles...

A good day of donuts!

Here it is basking in the sun...

Oh yes...every bit as good. You want...you get. It opens at 5am and if it survived a long hot run through the desert...it will be perfect on a train with ac!

We see donuts called Old Fashioneds but most of the time it's a general term used for a cake donut...buttermilk or sour cream donut without the very distinctive features as the west coast version.

The closest donut variety with similar features might be a plain or jelly (cruller) stick. Why? You are much better at figuring these things out...for sure. I'll wait for your answer!

Yes--there's some kind of reaction that's making those split like that, and I do wonder if it's buttermilk/sour cream, and probably the leavening is a different ratio, too.  Think about the difference between a layer cake and a quick bread:  the tops on quick breads often split, but layer cakes don't.  I'll poke around and see what I can learn.  In the meantime, I hear those maple things calling my name...

If you ask me...it's just big time donut MAGIC!

As superb as the cinnamon things were fresh...they do take on a new sinful dimension chilled...the next day.

I'm gonna load up the box. I'll listen to them during the entire ride!
