The Whataburgers in North Carolina ARE NOT the same as the Whataburgers along the Gulf Coast and in Texas.

I should say not the same company. The North Carolina outfit is found around the Concord/Kannapolis/Moorseville area. There also is/was a third Whataburger outfit around the Tidewater region of Virginia.

quote:Originally posted by Adjudicator David. A funny thing here. I was first introduced to Whataburger in '71 in Pensacola. 'Tis a small world, indeed. David and Adjudicator. I also had my first Whataburger in PNS when I reported here in 1959 for Flight Training. Then the Whataburger was located on Hiway 29 (North Palafox) which is now near and just south of "Car City". Today there are numerous locations since I have moved to ('91) and later retired(2000) and continue to live just across "Three Mile Bridge" in Gulf Breeze. I am overjoyed that we now have our very own Whataburger here in Gulf Breeze (Across from GB Hospital and the new world class Orthopedic facility "Andrews Institute". I can't have a lot of them anymore as I am attempting to follow somethink vaguely similar to a healthy diet, but I still love those Whataburgers............... (founded in Texas back in the fifties I think originally in Corpus Christi area)

I was close to Roma, TX today and I noticed the numerous onion fields. I stopped at a convenience store and I inquired about the onions and what type they were. The owner indicated that they grew whatever Whataburger wanted as they were the prime supplier. The owner indicated that there 10K acres of onions being grown in his community for Whataburger. Onions are running about $2.00 in the local markets here in Southern Indiana. I think there is a 'shortage' of some sort. Roma Texas is famous as the site of one of the better Clive Cussler "Dirk Pitt" novels. I would like to visit that area someday.

I remember Whataburger from when my family lived in Phoenix when I was a small child. I lived there from ages 4-9, 1971-1976. For years I thought it was called Waterburger. Whataburger and Burger Chef were the burger places the whole family liked. Us kids liked McDonalds and Burger King of course. The parents, not so much. Jack In The Box was a family favorite too, because of the variety. And Kentucky Fried Chicken, back when they weren't so afraid of the Food Police that they dared to use the word Fried in their name.

Back in the mid '80s, Whataburger had fajitas, with REAL steak. They were excellent beyond belief. They didn't last long. I guess I was running them out of business.

I drove from Laredo TX to Brownsville, TX and then back to Laredo which is about 550 miles. I saw dozens of Whataburgers. Even more plentiful than Whatburger is the thousands of taco stands. Every plce sells tacos. The Rio Grande Valley is certainly an agricultural area. You name it and they grow it. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Smith Knoxville, TN Everyone thinks of the Rio Grande Valley as citrus country but they also grow all kinds of vegetables, melons, peaches, corn, grains and you may have noticed just before McAllen driving west fields and fields of aloe vera plants. They have stands on the side of the road where you can buy pure aloe vera juice. Roma is also where they filmed Viva Zapata. The center of the town looks much as it did in the 1800s. Rio Grande City is home of Fort Ringold, both Pershing and Patton were stationed there at one time. joe

I got off highway 83 and drove into downtown Roma to the birding museum and the bird overlook on the bluffs above the Rio Grand. I sawmy first crest caracara there. It is an eagle like bird that resembles the bald eagle except smaller. A very interesting town. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

"whataburger is what a burger should be" hubster loves his double meat whatburger with jalapenos. he sneaks the onion rings when i'm not looking. it's one of the few places where you can get a diet dr pepper. he says there's something about the combination of mustard, lettuce and onions that makes it special.
