Gee Ed, neither do sturgeon, swordfish, marlin and a number of other species.

Very true, Michael. Even sturgeon caviar is technically not Kosher. If you wanted it, however you could find it on Fairfax Avenue in the Jewish/Russiaqn market, two doors down from Chabad and three doors down from an Orthodox shul.

My mother would not touch any form of pork. However, she loved lobster, crab and shrimp. When I asked her about what was the distinction between lobster and pork, she said that she was making three exceptions and that as long as she didn't eat pork or bacon, she came close enough.

My mother ate pork and lobster, etc., but we couldn't have a Christmas tree. And every year during the high holy days she would complain about not being able to attend services because she didn't have a ticket (that she never bothered to get). She was Jewish when it was convenient.

I had a Jewish boyfriend for a while...who came over for a ham dinner on Christmas. My poor mother didn't know how to handle it.

Mar, that looks way tasty! I haven't had a good kugel in a hundred years. Not even sure where I'd go about finding one around here, although I'm sure they must exist. Must do some research.

Tonight I made Parmesan Chicken (not to be confused with Chicken Parmigiana), with some Brussels sprouts and carrots sauteed with bacon and red onion and sprinkled with chopped walnuts.

Your dish looks great......I love catfish.  In the summer it's good with fried green tomatoes and cheesy bacon grits.  In the winter I make confetti rice and cole slaw.
You've never had stinky cheese and I've never had kugel!

My Ex used to make kugel all the time!  Its awesome!!

My B/day dinner tonight at P.F. Changs................
Ginger spiced chicken with Broccoli and steamed white rice!  Ring of Fire sauce to go with it..............the Ring of Fire sauce is specially made up for it and you have to ask for it as it's too hot for the average person to eat!

Interesting, Ed--I didn't know that about the scales.  I thought catfish weren't kosher because they ate @#$!* off the bottom of the river.  Anyway, your dinner sounds and looks good to me, mar!

No scales and no bottom feeders.  (I think)

Happy Birthday, Greg.

My mother would eat bacon and sausage but not pork chops or roast.

We must draw the line!

Added note:  I made the kugel, but not the catfish.

Boy, everything looks good! As Bob is on the road again, I am certainly getting some good ideas for myself-especially a kugel.  Bob doesn't like anything with eggs baked into it( quiche, etc) , so now is the time!

I had a frozen pizza because I was way too hungry to try out the new recipe for root beer pancakes I originally planned. BUT...I also made these. Butter Tart Nut Squares. They are STUPID good! And I am fairly confident I gained five pounds while making them, and another 30 or so eating one.

Absolutely! If you don't wait long enough for them to cool, you'll have to eat them with a spoon (as I discovered with the first one). Which isn't bad, just harder.

Going to have to make those!  Nice of them to add the calorie content.

I hear them hot calling for vanilla ice cream.

Thanks!  This recipe is very similar to Southern Pecan Bars which is basically pecan pie baked as a bar cookie.  I'm going to make them this weekend but I think I'll wait for them to cool!

Felix - I'm very curious to hear how your root beer pancakes are, when you make them!  I once ordered a slice of root beer cake and was disappointed, and surprised, as I thought it would be a very fun flavor.

Aren't butter tarts a popular dessert in Canada?  I've wanted to try them, but haven't yet.  Is this recipe similar to those but with walnuts instead of raisins, and made into squares instead of little tarts?

I honestly haven't got a clue about the recipe (it's not one of mine), but all of that sounds about right. I bet you could make them into tiny tarts, but the square pan is infinitely easier. It took me longer to preheat the oven than to put them together. I just had one a bit ago, and while I loved them warm, they're a whole lot easier to eat once they've cooled. I suspect it's a very good thing I only made a 9x9 pan.

Hopefully the root beer pancakes will happen soon, although now they'll have to be lunch (tonight I had a break from cooking ultra low carb as my mother went out for dinner).  Although now I kind of want ham loaf...it's been ages since I made one.

Oh great, I just realized I don't have a 9x9 pan!  Oh well, one quick trip to the store will fix that.
I hadn't had ham loaf in ages either and it sure tasted good.

Boy, that Hoffman is a lucky guy....

I was originally going with a cook and an accountant and a nurse, and 42 years ago married the accountant.  It was surely a fine decision over all these years, and I've not regretted it once...

We finished off what remained of the steak stir-fry from t'other night. Now I foolishly came in here just before heading to the kitchen for my midnight snack, and I really want ribs. I was gonna do that before and forgot about it, so I suspect that will be dinner on Monday (tomorrow I'm going OUT for dinner!).
