I need to live near you. The only thing I have here is a couple of Mexican markets, but they're in a part of town known more for crime rate than food.

I can barely buy soy sauce where I'm at, a real food black hole.
I have to plan EVERYTHING well in advance and have a well stocked pantry. When I do get into civilization (outskirts of Portland) I get so excited when I go shopping at ethnic or other "real" markets, I forget half the stuff I need or want. I'm finally after 10 yrs starting to miss being in a big city.

That's the stupid thing...I do live in a big city (well, the suburbs of one). But I find Meijer to be my best bet for any ethnic foods. Unless I go to Holland (renowned for being Dutch), where they have fabulous Asian and Mexican markets in strip malls. I don't get it, either, but I'll be hitting them all this weekend.

Actually after I took the picture I think he ate the kishka, the Vienna sausage and the grape.  Don't know what happened to the rest.

The avocados look great. I bought a few at the local grocery store today but they didn't look as good as yours.

Yay! It's been a hundred years since I was in LA. Thank you!

Tonight was my first night home in almost a week, using all things from the farmers' market including the garlic (except the fish): Tilapia with bell peppers, onion, and tomato; broccoli, cherry tomato, and watercress salad.

Tonight was all about salads: Broccoli, bacon, sweet onion, peanuts, cheese, and raisins in a sweet mayonnaise dressing; rice vermicelli, torn greens, red bell pepper, carrot, green onions, and sesame seeds in a sesame oil vinaigrette; and a couple of watermelon rind pickles on the side.

Cold kishka and then cold fish? What are you doing to that poor boy? Next thing I know you'll be serving him cold pie!

Figured I'd quick post last night's dinner as I'm heading out the door. Dinner tonight will be something from one of the food trucks at the event where I'm showing my jewelry in hopes of making some sales...picture depending on what kind of food trucks are there.

I called it a Farmstand Strata: roasted garlic sourdough bread top and bottom, filled with bacon, red, yellow, and green peppers, sweet onion, and a bunch of cheddar cheese. Eggs beaten with sour cream and seasonings poured over, left overnight, then baked and more cheese added to the top. Served with leftovers of the watercress salad and the broccoli salad.

My dinner was so bad tonight that I wrote to the company and the general manager.

I think I mentioned Rib Crib, a chain in a previous post.  They served the best barbecued pork baby back ribs I've ever had.  Granted I don't have that many to compare it to, but I've had my share.

We've been ordering the rib dinners to go.  They are always fall off the bone delicious.

Not tonight.  I ordered 3 rib dinners.  Two of them had a gorgeous brown bark and the third (mine) was black, overcooked and dry.  At least I could eat the Sweet and Smokey Baked Beans!

No I couldn't because they screwed up my order and gave me chili beans.  I hate chili beans.

Can one bad dinner cause you to never return to a place that was once a favorite?  I'd never go back to the Rib Crib.

End of rant.

Instead of writing to the GM why didnt you simply drive back and make them exchange the dinner?

Went to a good old fashioned place near where I grew up. Dinah's family Restaurant. Still good as ever---the CFS with real mashed potatoes and delicious creamed spinach was great. of Course, what they started out and were known for was their fried chicken and that was tasty too. just more expensive than it used to be-----their 1959 menu had a fried chicken dinner for $1.10!

LOVE Dinah's, Ed.  We go there often and take all visitors there on the way home from the airport.

They are also famous for their giant apple pancake.

Dinah's was featured on Hell's Kitchen this season when Gordon Ramsey took all the contestants there to cook in a professional kitchen.  I would have loved to have been there.

Greg...  The restaurant was understaffed last night and not running as it should.  Just getting helped and then the long wait for the food was enough to keep me from going back.  A letter is more satisfying for me, even if it doesn't do a thing.

Mar,
I had been there last about 4 years ago and felt it had gone down hill, but with this visit the old Dinah's is back and the food was fresh and delicious.

You were close, Mar. Big sign in front about Master Chef---right Ramsay, wrong chefs. We asked our waitress about it. They closed the whole restaurant down for the filming. It aired July 14th.

It's the most wonderful time of the year......

So I went to my local market and bought 4 fresh Hatch Green Chiles......

I smoked them for a half hour......

Then charred, steamed, seeded and peeled them.......

Grilled up some Angus beef burgers......toasted some "Everything" buns on the grill........topped them with red onions and cheddar cheese, the way they do at the Buckhorn Tavern in San Antonio, New Mexico.

And served them with a fresh steamed ear of corn.

Yes, it's the most wonderful time......of the year!

That is so beautiful it brought a tear to my eye, Ed! You've inspired me to renew my efforts at finding Hatch chilies here. Hasn't happened yet, but it needs to.

Tonight I also cooked from the farmer's market (and my sister's garden, and my garden), but it's not nearly as wonderful. Chicken thighs with yellow squash, tomatoes, and basil; mixed berries with blackberry-ginger balsamic and Splenda; and a salad made with butter lettuce, heirloom carrots (one white and one red/orange), green bell pepper, cucumber, cherry tomato, and some feta cheese (because I could), with grapeseed oil and red wine vinegar for dressing.

It looks delicious, Felix. I love anything with fresh berries!

I was surprised how many of the Hatch Chiles they had. I thought I was in a market in New Mexico for a minute! Now I'm trying to figure out whether I should get more----and what to do with them! But oh boy, those Double/Double Hatch Green Chile Cheeseburgers were yummy----I guess I could make them again!

Ed,
Smoke them, roast them, peel and seed them and freeze in packages enough for 2 GCCBs.  That's what I did last August when they were roasting them at Giant Eagle.  We ate green chile cheeseburgers all winter.......and I still have some in the freezer!  Love those Hatch chiles!  Your burger looks wonderful!!!
