What's Your Favorite Cheese on a Sandwich?

My favorite has to be provolone on just about any sandwich! What are some of your favorites? Especially with fresh Italian bread, Italian Salami, and roasted red peppers!

Ya, what kind of sandwich? Cheese varies greatly on what I eat, but for the most part Sharp Cheddar works for me!

On a burger or grilled cheese, Kraft Deluxe American slices- not the little wrapped ones. On a ham sandwich, maybe sliced Havarti or sharp cheddar from the deli. On a taco, Chihuahua or Cheddar. Ro-Tel dip, Velveeta. On my salad, Maries Bleu Cheese and maybe some extra crumbles on top. Pizza, Mozzarella. I steer clear of the Sargento's "blends". And just for fun, Baked Brie from Trader Joe's with raspberry jam on the side.

Cheese has always been one of my downfalls. To control my weight, on a daily basis I eat boring 2% slices, just to make myself think I'm really eating cheese. But when I totally lose control, I must have cheddar (should be sharp) or Swiss. Sometimes provolone. It does depend on the sandwich, yes. I really do love cheese.

I usually take a sandwich to work 3-4 days a week to save eating out costs, so I get a lot of practice:

Turkey: Usually provolone, sometimes sharp cheddar (Costco has an excellent sliced sharp cheddar, I think the brand name is Tillamook).

Roast Beef: Usually the cheddar, sometimes provolone.

Ham: Ham is problematical to me, I'm not big on swiss, but that seems to me the only thing that goes OK with sliced ham. Unless I'm feeling flush and spring for German Ham and Tilsit cheese at a German deli.

That's pretty much the rotation. I try to limit my salami intake, so maybe a couple times a month for that, with Provolone, of course.

My sister, whose work takes her to England several times a year, brings back some kind of white cheddar-style cheese that's wonderful made into grilled cheese sandwiches. We just call it "that English cheese" because we don't know the real name. I think one of her business associates in England buys it for her.

Smoked Gouda!

While it is difficult to find sliced Smoked Gouda, it is really great on a chicken sandwich.

Incidentally, as I discovered in Amsterdam, this cheese is not properly pronounced "Goo-da", as we tend to call it in the US. While it is difficult to replicate the authentic Dutch pronunciation, I think that "How-da" is pretty close to the pronunciation that I heard in The Netherlands.

Aged swiss is a very versatile and adaptable cheese. I pair it with nearly every sandwich, but none compare to roast beef and swiss.

My all time favorite is a smoked mozzarella from Cappellio Dairy in Schenectady N.Y. (Trader Joe's sell it nationaly). It is great cold, melted or on pizza's. It has a great deep smokey flavor.

Next is good Aged cheddar from Vermont,California etc.

Good chedar on burgers is always nice, but swiss aint bad either.
Ham can take provolone, swiss or my daughter's favorite, cheddar. Today I had a grilled ham with crumbled feta.
Turkey. Turkey is the only 'one type of cheese only' item I can think of and that would be swiss.
Someone mentioned smoked gouda. . . that is great on anything. . . as a matter of fact, maybe I'll try it on turkey.
Cream cheese and olives on wheat bread.
Oaxacan cheese on anything wrapped or fried in a tortilla (is that a sandwich?)
Blue cheese on almost anything. . . same with mozarella, parmaisan, goat cheese (farmer's style). . .
Cheese is so versatile. Don't confine yourself.
BTW: Someone mentioned Tillamuck cheese as being "pretty good." It's the best domestic mass produced brand that I know of. I've been to their facory in Oregon. They still do things with care and take their time without rushing the cheese.

Usually extra sharp cheddar, but mozzarella and/or provalone are a must if it's an Italian sandwich, hot or cold.

Lately I've had a thing for horseradish cheese and roast beef on rye. Yum.

I get strange looks when I put a slice of yellow american cheese on a p-nut-butterNjam sammich(until they try it)Im surprised there isn't a cheese section to the forum...I always have a variaty of cheeses on hand from american to cheddar to mozzerella and creamcheese. A summer fav is a thick slice of soft mozzerella, a thicker slice of garden fresh tomatoe and a couple basil leaves on french bread.. Then theres blucheese on a burger or mixed with creamcheese for crakers.. white vermont sharp cheddar on crackers with LUBI'S hot peppers, grated yellow sharp cheddar mixed with creamcheese and LUBI'S hot peppers on crackers or celery.. Swisscheese with roast beef, turkey or ham..the list goes on and on, picking a favorite cheese or even a favorite sandwich is almost impossible

For the classic American Grilled Cheese Sandwhich, I'll go for Kraft Deluxe Deli Slice American Cheese with a little butter and white bread. On crackers, tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, I like aged Cheddar Cheese, extra-sharp, if not sharper. On paninis with turkey or ham I like Havarti or Swiss. On ones with cured meats like salami or pepperoni I like Provolone and Mozzerella. I also like roasted chicken, caramelized onions and Brie on a bagueete served with Chicken aujus. I generally don't like cheese on burgers or roast beef sandwiches, but will occasionaly get a Captain Neon burger, which has bleu cheese dressing and bacon on it.

Haven't tried it on a sandwich yet, just discovered it at Trader Joe's, but Laughing Cow Swiss cheese wedges are almost toooooo good to eat. They come in a little round cardboard container with maybe 10 wedges (didn't check) and it is so creamy, so decadent, so absolutely delicious, I can't say enough. And I'm not a Swiss cheese lover. This Laughing Cow would be good spread (very spreadable) on a bagel, or on most any other kind of sandwich.

It is so good that the next shopping trip I make I'll get 3 or 4 containers just so I won't run out of it.

I think it is mentioned in the South Beach diet.

Usually provalone on italian subs and steak sandwiches. On ham and cheese I like swiss, or sometimes cheddar if grilled.

It all depends on the sandwich or hero.

On patrami, corned beef or roast beef hot or cold I like swiss cheese on rye. On a Italian cold cut hero I like provolone if cold but if hot mozzarella or provolone (either one). On a ham & cheese I'll take either swiss or american depending on which I have a taste for. And on a turkey sand/hero swiss or pepperjack cheese are the move.

My dad used to make my school lunches with Havarti. At room temperature, the cheese is wonderfully creamy and great in a basic sandwich with turkey or ham.

I like sharp cheddar, but almost any cheese is good if the sandwich is nicely grilled. Not being especially talented in this department, I have ordered a couple ofTHESE THINGS to help me out. When they come I'll report back on how well they work.
