What's the Best Topping on a Chicago Dog?

Frankly, I'd rather eat dog barf than what has been called a Chicago-style hotdog.

I'll take a NY dog over a (mixed salad) Chicago dog anytime! What are they trying to do, cover up the taste of the meat?

Probably, being that about 99.9% of restaurants serve hot dogs that taste (if you're lucky) like nothing whatsoever.

    Love it!

A Chicago dog needs all of the things listed. It's the combination of all the flavors that make it so yummy.

I'm not exactly a fan of Chicago Dogs, but there are many people that are. As much as I love my chili dogs, many others do not. Each is entitled to their own regional food and tastes.

As a kid, only mustard. Today, I'm a minimalist. A thin line of yellow mustard, a schear of Merkt's cheddar cheese, and some well done grilled onions.

I figured CSD would chime in on this topic sooner or later. I am not a great hot dog person. Do not get me wrong as I like them but I am not an expert. Personally, I prefer the Chicago dog over others. That is just a personal taste though.

Sport peppers and onions are all I need but I'll usually get them with the works. I wonder if Mr. Hoffman might describe his rather unusually choice.

You cannot buy the bright green relish in Knoxville. I have always meant to stop at a grocer in the Chicago to buy some. I do not know if it is any better than relish in Knoxvile but it is definately prettier.

I buy Chicago-style dogs once a month or so... If I had a CSD, and you had a sack full of dog puke, I wouldn't trade.

I didn't mention my choice. I merely said I'd rather eat dog barf than what's been described as a Chicago-style hotdog.

Whether dog barf or ketchup, both would ruin good corned beef hash...

Oh, and one other thing. Chicago dogs are excellent. The best I've ever had was at Weiner's Circle in Lincoln Park, IL.

Where's the Sourkraut? That and some spicey mustard with a sour pickle alongside is my favorite.

I like kraut as well, but I don't think that is a typical Chicago style option.

I slide the garden off the dog and eat it as a salad on the side.
Then add the mustard and the kraut and pass the Bud.

On The Beach (starring Fred Astaire) at Treasure Island (starring
Jackie Cooper and Wallace Berry)-----here in the lovely Sunshine State--
----there is a wonderful Vienna Hot Dog Joint (that was recommended
by a lady who lived in St Pete but is no longer a poster. Forgot
her name !!!!) that has very good Chicago dogs.

All of them, except ketchup and sweet relish.
Slices of tomato and cucumber, chopped onion, real mustard (not glow-in-the-dark tumeric-based library paste), dill pickle spears, pickled chiles, and celery salt all on a Vienna dog, nestled in a fluffy poppy seeded roll, is Windy City nirvana. Black olive slices, too, if they got 'em, but if they don't, it's not a deal breaker.

Frankly, I'd rather eat dog barf than what has been called a Chicago-style hotdog.

We're all very happy for you.  And no one is stopping you from doing that.  Apparently you felt it very important to voice that you would rather eat dog barf than a Chicago-style hot dog.  Why it was important for you to say that, who knows?
BTW, have you ever tried dog barf or a Chicago hot dog?  Maybe you tried one of them when you were a quarterback in the Air Force while living in the Bahamas writing for a hunting journal or whatever you conjured up for that week.
As for me, I'd eat a Chicago dog over dog barf.  I find a hot dog, tomatoes, sport peppers, relish, poppy seed bun and the other ingredients more palatable than vomit of any kind.  But to each their own.

This thread is from 2007 and you're being you now?  You missed 4 years.

Scrape off most of the relish, throw out the tomatoes and I'll eat the pickle separately.

I don't understand the celery salt.

There are no rules. If you can Find it, you can comment on it.
I'm into Chicago Dogs but take the Sport Peppers off them. I like a modified Chicago Dog that includes all the fixin's except the Sport Peppers plus finely chopped Coleslaw!
I has amazed to learn of CSD's favorite Dog. Thought Neon Relish ran thru his veins!
