The first big burger I tried to finish was at a Bob's Big Boy in
Los Angeles back in 1973..came up short. As far as I know, the
biggest one I've had was 12oz., here at Gary's just a few months ago.
This Denny's burger sounds like the challenge to try and finish
the 72 oz. steak at the Big Texan in Amarillo....

    P.S. I was 11 at the time I went to Bob's, so I hadn't learned
to master the fine art of finishing off burgers yet

My big burger experience came at Tessaro's on Liberty Ave. in Pittsburgh. First time we went there I made the mistake of also ordering a bowl of their Italian Sausage Soup as a starter. When I ordered it (after ordering my burger) the waitress asked if I'd been there before. I replied that I had not and she asked if I was REALLY hungry. I said I was and off she went.

I somehow managed to finish both the soup and the burger but never made the same mistake again!

anyone looking for a big burger in the west michigan area should look to either Turk's in Nunica or The Brown Bear in Shelby. Turk's has a 1/2 lb burger topped with 1/2 pound of grilled shaved ham and all the fixens. only drawback is the burger is taller than it is wide. makes for tricky eating. The Brown Bear has a burger called the Brown Bear. this burger is not only one pound of grilled beef but has a diameter of about 10 inches. (this is not an exageration, the owner has a local bakery making the buns special) either way both are very good and can overwhelm even the biggest of appetites. good luck!

A favorite treat, whenever I pass through Pasadena, is the 1 pound southwest burger from Fudrucker's. With a large order of onion rings and a drink this is a meal that requires no dessert. I have yet to not finish this thing, but I don't know if I could conquer that 6 lb monster like the one at Denny's Beer Barrel but darnit I wanna try!
I also, just recently, heard that one of the casino's in Laughlin Nevada offers up a one pounder that's free if you can finish it. Guess where I'm eatin'the next time I'm in Laughlin.

This is the biggest in town that I know of, 1 #, and they claim to regularly sell double meat burgers.

Actually, I've never tried it; made the trek once but chickened out and went for some soul food rather than the burger.

A a half pounder with sides fills me up to the point of being a little uncomfortable.

I'm with the Hermit, A double 1/4 pounder is enough for me. I really prefer a Culver's Jumbo Bacon Butterburger for my Sandwich of choice in the "Big Burger" catagory. While not in the 'Monster Burger' range it is enough to keep me from gnawing the steering wheel for an hour or two.

Bob's Bar in Martinsburg, NE (pop. 90) was the largest burger I ever ate, it was 18 oz. of beef hanging out over the bun by an inch, with all the fixin's......for $2.65.......and NO I'm not kidding! And NO, it wasn't 1956, it was last November!!

As a child, my grandparents would always take me on a roadtrip to visit the White Haven Diner in White Haven, PA. Their burger there was massive as I remember it. It wasn't all that thick, but it was the diameter of the large plate that it was served on. I could only eat about a quarter of it at the time. I haven't been there since I was little, so the size of the burger back then may have been relative to my age. I'm sure if I'd go there today, I'd be able to judge better since my appetite has grown substantially since I was last there at the ripe old age of 6.

Stanpnepa, you're from up that way...have you been to the W.H. diner and if so, are the burgers still as big as I remember them to be?

    Regards,
    Chris H.

PS...If you get to my neck of the woods, Allentown, PA...I'd highly suggest a visit to Wert's Cafe near the Allentown Fairgrounds. Their burger doesn't classify as the biggest I have ever eaten, but it sure ranks up amongst the tastiest. Ruby, or anyone else from the Valley, have you ever been to Wert's?

Biggest burger i have had was a 1 pound burger with 3/4 pound of grilled pastrami on top. Lettuce, tomato, onion and a nice big kaiser roll that sopped up all the juice.

I usually start that off with a bowl of kishke, wet of course!

Helen's Hateful Hamburger in Gardiner, Montana (just outside the North entrance to Yellowstone). You need at least 4 hands to handle that whopper--big enough to cover a dinner plate and nowhere near perfectly round. That was 10 years ago, and I doubt that the place is still open.

That burger is ridiculous. Why do people think everything bigger is better? Something tells me a tiny White Castle would knock the socks of that place.

I must be in a cranky mood today, but it annoys me when restaurants use the simple tactic of making some large to attract attention. Whatever happened to cooking something that tastes good?

Bigger is always better! Did you not learn that in school?

Seriosuly though, the burger i describe is actually a lesson in quality and quantity. Of course it pretty much my only meal of the day. And a rare meal at that.

I didn't say it was the best I ever had (that would be at Johnson's in Siler City, NC), just the biggest--but not bad. Incidentally, Helen, at Helen's Corral Drive-In, also serves up good bison burgers, but her claim to fame is "Helen's Hateful Hamburger". This place is mentioned in many Yellowstone write ups.

The biggest burger I have ever eaten was a double mushroom-bacon-cheeseburger at Shoeless Joe's in Kingston, Ontario. Unfortunately, it is no longer on the menu....but it was a doozy:

sauteed mushrooms, onions, 4 pieces of bacon, and a thick slice of cheddar on top of 3/4 of a pound of beef (two patties)

When it was on the menu, you used to get a signed autographed picture of Joe Bowen, the announcer of the Toronto Maple Leafs....who is a partner in the franchise, if you could finish it.

I hate the Toronto Maple Leafs with a passion, but I got the picture because I finished each and every last bite of that kick-ass burger!

Chris, I didn't notice this thread when you posted it originally but I'd agree with Wert's being one of the best, if not the best burger in our area.

Hermit - where is that place???

We lived in PA for a couple of years when my father was transferred there. There was a place in Hamarville (sp?), cannot remember the name, but they made hamburgers that covered a dinner plate.

LoneStar - sorry, didn't realize I hadn't included the name: Adrian's Burger Bar, 5300 Block of Sonora St., just east of Lockwood, just south of I-10. Here's a link to the Press review:

    http://www.houstonpress.com/issues/2002-10-31/cafe.html

They named it best burger in the city in 03, but not this year. I still haven't tried one, but it's tempting.

Look for an e-mail from me.

    Here's a six-pounder:
    http://www.anothersite.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2408

Some co-workers and I tried the one-pounders at this tavern in Norwalk CT. One pound is not THAT big except it came with everything possible on it, including a chili that burnt like battery acid. After that meal we were all pretty bloated beyond words. Our boss cheerfully announced, "I'm still hungry! Who wants another?"
To our horror we watched as he ate another.

    Ruby,

Just did a quality control test at Wert's one night before going to the Rascal Flatts concert at the Allentown Fair and everything tested out way above average as usual. I think Wert's is deserving of a Roadfood honor by the Stern's.

    Happy eating,

The Husky Burger at The Ram in Seattle is the biggest around (about the size of a 45rpm record). A full pound of beef plus fixings.

The tallest would be the Monster Burger at Red Robin (I add mushrooms, 1000 Island, and substitute the onions with a fried onion ring).

The HubCap burger at Cotham's in Scott, AR would probably be a close second, but the biggest and best big burger is at WF Cody's in Springfield, MO (the one on east Sunshine).

This original version of this burger was invented at this same location back in the '70's when it was Steve's Sweetwater Inn. This sounds unbelievable now, but they had a lunch special then that gave you a full pound burger, chips, and a draft beer for $1.25.

That was good college food, my friends...
