Before attempting to settle any large fire-loss claim, most insurance carriers will retain a private fire cause-and-origin investigator to carefully review the fire scene itself. And, further, most will spend whatever time they feel they need interviewing and reviewing any and all of the circumstances surrounding the fire loss in question. Of course the motive of these folks is slightly different than that of us who investigate fires for the fire service (fire department, town, county, state or whatnot) in that they are looking for indication of fraud and/or a fault with, say, a partcular piece of equipment. If such a fault is found, the insurance carrier will then attempt to suborgate to the manufacturer of the equipment as well as the person who sold it, installed it etc. The final outcome is that this whole exercise is often very helpful to those of us in the fire service in determining what actually happened. In the event of suspected fraud or suspected arson (lacking enough evidence to bring criminal action), this type of investigation usually allows the insurance company not to pay off for any loss. Hence the burden of proof is then shifted to the property owner to bring civil legal action to prove that the fire was indeed an accident. I hope that this type of investigation is taking place at each of the three fires in question here. Wally New York Certified Fire Investigator II

Two older gentlement were lounging by the pool of their condo somewhere in the sunny southland. One asked the other how he managed to find himself in a retirement situation. Simple says he, I lost my store to a fire and came south with the insurance settlement proceeds. He asked the same of his companion and the other guy replied that he had lost his store to a flood and, likewise retired with the insurance money. With that, the first guy asked "How do you cause a flood?" That was the point Willy (not me, I'm Wally!) was making in his post above. Nuff said. Wally

It's Wednesday September 6th and it's about 12.30 AM EDT. As I sit here posting this, yet another rerstaurant burns. This time it's Domenic's, a long time Plattsburgh, NY establishment. Thereare at least 5, and possibly more, fire departments on the scene. From the sound of the radio transmissions I am hearing, the situation is not good. Wally Plattsburgh, NY

Not casting doubts on any of the establishments mentioned here, but when I was growing up in R.I. these types of "lightning strikes" were very common. Frequently they followed divorce, a bad partnership, failure of a horse to come in as expected, etc. As the recession and oil crises of the early 70s built they became even more common. IMO as the economy continues to tank (and the administration ignores existing and looming crises) we will see more small businesses, mostly restaurants but also other "flammables" such as auto repair shops going up overnight.

I was thinking along the same lines. It is entirely possible that "Tommy the Torch" was hired by restaurant owners who needed money for some reason or other. Of course, all of these fires could be coincidental, but...

Hello All, Perhaps some people do set fire to businesses for insurance. But my grandfather had a general store in the country for over 50 years, and a fire put him out of business. Let me tell you, insurance money never pays enough for what you've lost. The smell a place has, the particular places regulars sat, unique and treasured memorabilia, and the secure feeling of a home away from home is all gone. Add to that his accounts which showed who he has given credit to until payday or til they had better days, which many people failed to remember how he carried them through their bad times. I don't mean to be a downer, but we've become so cynical about each other. Why do we look at a tragedy and wonder how much money someone is going to make out of it? MilwFoodlovers, thank you for your voice that restored some dignity to this post. Take Care, Fieldthistle

I know a barkeep in my neck of the woods that has had 3 of 5 or 6 places burn. Now that is some track record. MikeS.

He's a really nice guy and pours a great drink and his 16oz strip steaks are more like 22oz but I sure wouldn't want to be his insurance carrier. MikeS

This morning's TV news carried a story about the Tom Sawyer Diner in Paramus, NJ having been destroyed by fire last night. If it's the work of Tommy The Torch, he is certainly getting around a lot nowadays!
