When was that moment that you knew you were an adult?

(Barring deaths of parents or loved ones to keep this light) I realized that I must be an adult when I was driving home from work for 30 minutes until I realized that I'd been listening to the news the entire time.

I knew when my son was born. I was 18 and the breadwinner.

The day I looked around the theatre and realized, as a bunch of the new guys were looking to me for guidance and information, that I was the exact same age my mentors were when I was 18 and doing the same thing to them.

The first time I was addressed as "mister" by a younger person.

When I took a right, out of my parents driveway in Chevy Chase, headed for my new life in California. " Free at last, free at last, great God almighty, free at last."

Oh- I am supposed to know I am an adult? However, I did have a moment outside my new apartment building- a very young child told me " Move old lady"!I apparently surpassed adult hood into old age!

My first apartment, 1996, when my first (and only!) roommate had a complete meltdown.

I don't know how I can find the time to do everything I want to do and wonder how I managed to put up with a job for so many years.

My favorite part of retirement is not having to be anywhere at a specific time. Just to go and do as I please is wonderful. Like you,Davydd, I don't know how I had time to work. It is also nice to cruise Roadfood without pretending I'm doing something else!
