Where Can I Find Farmland Dinner Sausage? Fri, 05/23/08 6:02 PM (permalink)
Can someone please help me find out where I can buy Farmland smoked dinner sausage? It can be used to put in jambalaya and red beans and rice. I have checked their website under the product locator and have contacted every store listed in AL and MS. I have personally visited these stores to no avail they don't carry this product. They do carry some Farmland products but not this one. I just need to know the store name and location so I can visit or contact them to place an order. Thanks for all of your help.

Gracey,
I decided to perform a sanity check of Farmland's website. It is not a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) directory service. Farmland must sell a lot of their output through brokers and distributors, so even Farmland does not know who is selling their product. We, too, see Farmland products come and go here in New York City. A friend of mine from the panhandle of Florida tells me that there are only a handful of food warehouses down in your (and his) neck of the woods, and if none of them carries the product you are after, you will not be able to get any.

If the price of gas was not so high, I would suggest you put an ice chest in your car, get on Interstate 10, and drive out to the Lafayette, Louisiana area, where you will find local meat markets producing dinner sausage that will run rings around Farmland. I have to assume you recently moved since you know about Farmland. But, please try some of the local brands, brands you never heard of before. Farmland does not have a monopoly on high quality sausage used to make such southern dishes as jambalaya and red beans and rice.

They are pretty common in independent food stores in Ohio. My fulmers has hot dog, dinner franks, smoked sausage and ground breakfast(bulk-in a roll) sausage.

I think you are on to something there b/c I did find it hard to believe they don't know who is selling what so that I could get my hands on some. Now that you have explained it that way, it makes better sense. I mostly liked the sausage b/c it is MSG free. I do appreciate your feedback. Thanks A Bunch!!

Gracey,

Farmland is owned by Smithfield Foods, you may be better off buying a Smithfield product as they actually put their signature on it. Not that is good, but I think they may take more pride in the product. Unless you go local, it is hard to get away from Smithfield. They own the commercial pork market as well as many brands you may think as independent.

My suggestion is to learn to buy local, from a local provider. It is always better.

The Farmland store locator indicates Farmland smoked sausage is available at Pathmark supermarkets in the New York Metro area. Well, I was in the Pathmark Supermarket along side Bruckner Blvd. in the Bronx yesterday. I looked for Farmland's smoked sausage products. They have none, zilch, nada, keine. The OP indicated she already tried the retailers listed for Mississippi and Alabama. None, zilch, nada, keine. Lately, I have found web sites operated by the huge food conglomerates to be unreliable. I am talking about the likes of Nestle, Unilever, Kraft, Sara Lee, Smithfield Foods, George Weston Bakers. Corporate seems have shifted responsibility to the various divisions. But the divisions had all their web talent fired in the interests of the efficiencies to be realized by the cluster-f*** mergers.

David NYC,

You seem to be quite up on this stuff. Is there one website titled "Who Owns What," where one can find, well, who owns what? Thanks.

I don't know of one web site that has a complete listing of who owns what. I do tend to remember news reports of mergers and buyouts because it often means favorite foods of mine will be discontinued or changed. Other than that, I take the name of a company and put it in a search engine, then add words like sold, merged, bought, bankrupt, hostile takeover, leveraged buyout, etc. If the company is no longer independent, almost always the names of the other company(s) will pop up.

Sometimes these giant corporations are more than happy to tell you what they own. Here are a few examples of how little competition there is in the American food industry. I bet it will be an eye-opener.

Some sausage sources (all ship):
• Bourque's is outstanding. Every time I have an excuse to be in the area, I stock up on their fresh sausages, but the smoked varieties are just as good and I get them at times just to save myself the trouble.
• Bellue's is just as ggo, but has less selection. (Their andouille is the best I've ever had.)
• Poche's is very good, but my experience with their products is limited. What I have eaten would stand comparison with the other two places.

A few more places to get the REAL DEAL:

I have used both Savoie andouille and Richard's ( say ree-chards) andoullie and I prefer the Richard's - not sold on line (even though they do have a website), and only sold in Super Walmarts in Louisiana- period! I have been lucky, though, I have a friend who travels home to the Baton Rouge area two or three times a year and she brings me a supply of Richard's every time she comes back to Dallas. Great in gumbo's, jambalaya's etc!

Dude, the poster stated they visited the Farmland website and made contact with the retailers listed there.

Thanks for jumping the gun and not reading my post. If you had read it carefully, you would have seen that I had already visited the stores listed in my area.

I have checked their website under the product locator and have contacted every store listed in AL and MS. I have personally visited these stores to no avail they don't carry this product. They do carry some Farmland products but not this one. I just need to know the store name and location so I can visit or contact them to place an order. Thanks for all of your help.

Gracey2;
Girl, you live within a good spit of the Mecca of Sausage for the dishes you mentioned. Why on God's Green Earth would you want to mess up a pot of RB&R or Jambalayla with something so ordinarry as FARMLAND sausage????? Jump across the border girl into LA and get some good Andoullie for that purpose. Here's a web site where you can get the BEST (IMHO). www.poches.com They wil ship it to you. FARMLAND sausage is for those folks up North that don't know Cajun Sausage from dog poop!

Hey, folks, just an observation here.

This thread seems to be getting a bit confrontational for my tastes. If I were any f several people here I'd feel assaulted and be angry. How about we all (a) be polite and (b) cool down?
