Where can I purchase this spice?

My buddy likes Northwoods Steak Seasoning from a company called Culinary Secrets, he got me going the stuff too. He had a friend at a restaurant who would help us out, but that source dried up. Where might a fellow purchase such a spice? Is there a restaurant supply company who would ship some to a private person?

The Spice House http://www.thespicehouse.com/ has a pretty big assortment of steak and beef seasonings. Try their search engine and maybe you can find something with the same ingredients as your missing one.

Restaurant supply companies sell to licensed business accounts and are not open to the public. We have accounts with Reinhart, Sysco, Restaurant Depot, and various other local suppliers. Restaurant Depot is cash & carry. Reinhart and Sysco deliver and require a minimum order, which can be costly. If you have a connection in the restaurant business, use them. CSD

Many companies like Smart & Final focus on their private labels, but you may get lucky. I'd also sniff around your local Costcos and Sams Clubs because these do a lot of restaurant business and just might carry Northwoods Steak Seasoning. (In the interest of full disclosure, I used to sell to restaurants for Smart & Final. I'm biased, but it's a fine company, although I no longer have any connection with it.)

The Spice House...right across the street from Usinger's. That has to be the best one-two culinary punch in America!

It's certainly my favorite shopping trip in town. Bill and Ruth Pennzey founded The Spice House many years ago and sold it to their daughter. Milwaukee is blessed in many ways when it comes to home town products. Klements outlet store can be a real find on many types of sausages and I just learned on the board today that Hoffy's makes "Pink's" hot dogs.

I'll never forget the Spice House. One day, I walked in there after my usual visit to Usinger's, and ran smack into Julia Child. I think I asked her to sign my jar of saffron.

Hey chicagostyledog, Restaurant Depot has the same loophole that Smart & Final had when it used to be closed to the public: Nonprofits are allowed. Check this sentence from http://www.restaurantdepot.com/Member/joinstep0.asp "All you need to become a member is your Certificate of Authority (business license), or proof that you represent a non-profit organization." Theedge probably helps with functions at a nonprofit or two be it purchasing for a scout troop or Elks function or whatever, where there could be a little side purchase of Northwoods Steak Seasoning. We're not breaking any laws here.

Voyaguer, The nonprofit loophole has always been a well guarded secret. In November, Restaurant Depot changed policies. I weekly shop the Milwaukee store, where I originally registered my business. Once in a while, I shop the Des Plaines store. This time, my id scan card didn't work. I spent an hour having my info from Milwaukee faxed to Des Plaines to add me to their system. I also had to fax a copy of my Wisconsin resale certificate to the Des Plaines store, when I returned home. If this is happening to businesses, I can only imagine the obstacles the nonprofits are now facing. CSD

Yes, these obstacles, when they exist for nonprofits depending on the state laws that apply, are probably the result of tax authorities not wanting groups that do not have certified nonprofit status to be able to avoid sales taxes. When I said "We're not breaking any laws here" in regards to Theedge's personal purchase, I wasn't thinking of the tax avoidance issue. My bad.

Thanks for all of the info guys. It looks like my best bet is to contact a local restaurant. I know the owners of a local Q joint, maybe they can hook me up.

Wholesale places aroud here just ask for who ya work for and it's a done deal.. (Probably due to the mass amounts of outlet stores)...

I have been shopping at Penzeys for a while now- I am lucky, they have a store in Dallas- but they also have all their stuff available on-line and it is easy to order and receive. Give them a try- especially if it turns out that it is their receipe that you love.

Hey folks, www.penzeys.com is the web address. I am almost positive they are willing to sell products in bulk. I have purchased their products for years at the home base locations through out Southeastern Wisconsin. I've watched with state pride as more stores open up through out the country. I am particularly fond of their spicier (Black & Red) and salt-free (Sunny Spain) products.
