Where did all of the great hot dog places go in NJ?

Fat Mike's, Red Chimney (the original one on Rt 3 west bound), Callahan's, Johnny's Lunch, and at least a couple more on Rt 46 that I can't remember.  Most of the places around now are just awful.

One of the greatest, Syd's, is also gone. But we still have a lot of great hot dog joints in Jersey. Jerry's, Tommy's, Boulevard Drinks, the cart in front of Karl Ehmer's, Rutt's Hutt, Destination Dogs, !ibby's, Max's, Windmill, and many more.

Some of these are unfamiliar to me.  I live a mile from Rutt's and have been going there >30years.  Tell me about some of there others (where, specialty, etc) - Destination Dogs, Max's, Windmill for example.

Max's famous hotdogs is located in Long Branch, on Ocean ave and a little further south is one of the Windmill restaurants. Max's serves a Schickhaus  footlong hotdog that is cooked on a flat grill then finished over a flame grill, while the WindMill were serving SaBrett's the last time I was there. Eagan's Restaurant was located on the Belleville Turnpike in North Arlington, they served a Thumann's HotDog the same as Rutt's Hutt still serves today, they had a great chili dog and their French fries with gravy were also very good.

Check the archives where these places and more have been discussed in detail. Destination Dogs was reviewed a few posts back.

Most of the places are just awful?  Rutt's, Hot Grill, Galloping Hill, Hiram's, Randy the Hot Dog guy, fingers crossed Charlie's Pool Room, Toby's Cup-geez, Johnny and Hanges, Manny's Texas Weiner-we have a ton of great places for many different style hot dogs.  And we have plenty of places to buy old fashioned artisan made hot dogs as well.

Eagan's was great, famous homemade chili cheese dogs, the dogs were the same as Rutt's Hutt. You can get the same hotdog at Hiram's ,bigger dogs and better fries than rutt's. We still have Dickie Dee's & Jimmy Buffs and charlies in Kenilworthfor great Italian Hotdogs. In Newark don't forget all the great hotdog trucks, Donny's Dogs on Central ave, Tonys on Park & lake st, Chris's on Heller pkwy & JJ's on bloomfield ave. Father & son in linden, Tommy's & Jerry's in Elizabeth. I heard the Getty grill is no longer , but Rutts, Hot Grill & Midtown grill are still in Clifton. Maxx's ,the Windmill and Maui dogs in south Jersey. Hot Dog Johnny's still going strong almost 70 years, and Hopefully Charlie's Pool Room since 1925 serving grandma Fenczes secret sauce will reopen soon. Sure miss those Mealies and the great service from John and Joe.

Does anyone remember "Three Acre Grill" used to be on Riverside Ave Lyndhurst NJ.
The menu was on paper plates stapled to the walls above the counter.
