There are several good BBQ places in and around Atlanta: Sam & Dave's on Whitlock Ave in Marietta (another location on Lower Roswell Road east of Johnson Ferry.) Old South Barbecue on Windy Hill Rd in Smyrna. Two Brothers BBQ in Ballground, GA. Dreamland BBQ on Alpharetta Hwy in Roswell

Moved out of the area four years ago, but we always liked Champs, which was a few blocks north of Windy Hill on South Cobb Drive. The brisket was very good, as was the chopped pork. West of downtown on Bankhead Highway (just north of HWY 20)is Wallaces - - feel like you are really in the South over there. They do lots of business, big dining room, very reasonable. Closer to Atlanta we always liked Dusty's on Briarcliff (Carolina BBQ).

Champ's had been on my list - would have be on the above list - but they went out of business a few months ago. It seems that their payroll service failed to make their tax payments for them. They found out when the Feds slapped a lien on Champ's.

"Harold's" is considered the grandfather of Atlanta Q pits, and it deserves it's hallowed reputation. Unlike 90% of "Atlantans", I grew up here, and have tried every BBQ place I have stumbled on. Harold's still stands all comers, especially it's Brunswick stew, when teamed with the cracklin' cornbread---something ya just can't find much anywhere else. Harold's is a trip back to the 50's in itself, and if you want to make it a night, take in a movie or two for dirt cheap, at the nearby "Starlight" drive-in.

Bub-Ba-Q in Jasper is the best. Not a big place but the food is unbelievable. The guy that owns the place does BBQ competitions all over the place and has won alot of trophies.

Bubba, of Bub-Ba-Q has received some very good press from the participants in the National Barbecue News forum. I haven't been yet, but it is on the ever lengthening short list.
