I stopped at Schlafly's http://www.schlafly.com/brewpubs.shtml last summer and enjoyed the beer sampler, beer biscuits with cheddar chive butter and blue cheese butter, white cheddar soup and grilled asparagus. Both of the butter tasted great with the asparagus!

For some really good BBQ I would go to Pappy's Smokehouse. The best BBQ I think I have ever had in my life. Get there early as they tend to fill up fairly fast. www.pappyssmokehouse.com/ Pappy's Smokehouse 3106 Olive St St Louis, MO My other choice is similar to lpatinga's but I liked it better than Schlafly's. It is called Morgan Street Brewery and they have some excellent microbrews. I think I tried all of them over the span of 2 nights going there for dinner on my last trip and found them all really good. They also have a really good thing called, coniques, which are little fried potato balls. Out of this world amazing. They have really good burgers and a killer meatloaf. http://www.morganstreetbrewery.com/ Morgan Street Brewery 721 N 2nd St St Louis, MO

In Arkansas, I recommend McClard's BBQ in Hot Springs, which is about an hour or so southwest of Little Rock... terrific ribs. In Lexington, KY, try the Parkette Drive-In on New Circle Road. It's a classic 1950s drive-in with carhops that recently reopened after a total renovation. And in Memphis, TN, I'd go with the Arcade Restaurant for breakfast, and Cozy Corner for barbeque; I've had very good meals at both places.

In St. Louis: Village Bar-Great greasy bar burger and the best onion rings in town. O'Connells-Big bar burger, regularly voted best burger in town. Carl's Drive In-True old time diner with great little burgers and root beer.

Just east of Biloxi, in Gulfport, is Vrazel's--adjacent to Island View Casino(but not affiliated with). It is a white tablecloth place with great seafood specialties--Eggplant Larosa, Veal Joshua, and Crabmeat Soup are some of my favorites. Just east of Biloxi, in Ocean Springs, you will find McElroy's on the Bayou. It has been around forever and has good fried seafood. In Biloxi you will find Mary Mahoney's(another white table cloth place--not as good as Vrazel's--but pretty place), Kim Long's--vietnamese--cheap and good, and Ole Biloxi Schooner--mom and pop seafood--good poboys. I eat often at these places 'cause I live here--enjoy.

If you eat in Memphis, you won't need to eat again in Tunica. Hold off for Clarksdale, MS, and eat at Abe's barbeque or at Rest Haven for great Lebanese food (kibbie and cabbage rolls!!!) Both of these are right on HWY 61 (not the bypass)

Last week we had guests from South Carolina that had heard of Abe's in Clarksdale and wanted to try the ribs. I'd had a BBQ sandwich from there a couple of years ago that wasn't all that good so I hadn't been back - but I also wanted to see what the ribs were like. Unfortunately all six of us had to give the ribs a thumbs down - they were undercooked and as tough as boot leather. There was no smoke flavor at all - however their BBQ sauce was pretty good.

I'm sorry you were disappointed at Abe's. I guess barbeque (like so much else) is what you grew up with. Abe's was the only barbeque I had eaten until I went off to school. I still love it!

We were just puzzled that a place that has such a good reputation for barbecue would serve ribs that were that tough. The next time they visit they want to go to the Rendezvous in Memphis.

When in Lexington, I recommend the Nighthawk Special at the Columbia Steakhouse on North Limestone. (They have two other locations, but the original downtown location almost always gets better results.) http://columbiassteakhouse.com/
