Where to buy seed? Wed, 08/25/04 9:29 AM (permalink)
Here in Norway we dont get any assortment of chilies to speak of, so I think Ill grow my own. Im mostly interested in the mexican types but Ill try anything. Also I want to try to grow some herbs. Where do I get hold of seeds online? Oh, and please share your own experience of homegrowing...

Try the Tomato growers supply company. You can order a free catalog online. All they sell are tomato and pepper seeds - They have a huge selection. Here is a link www.tomatogrowers.com

My experience with chili peppers (I typically grow jalepenos and serranos)is that they like it hot. The hotter the weather the hotter the peppers seem to be. Being that you are in Norway, I don't know if your growing season will be long enough for chili peppers. You may need a greenhouse for many of the varieties. Most seeds packets will say how many days until harvest. If you intend to plant them outside be sure to check in order to select the right varieties for your growing season. Good luck!

      Check out http://www.rareseeds.com/catlisting.php?dbswitch=&cat=44&subcat=73

If they don't have what you want, try Googling "heirloom seeds" or "rare seeds" That's how I got this name and there seem to be many more options. I thought I had read about people who collect non-hybrid seeds to try to preserve the traditional varieties of fruits and vegetables--and apparently I did.

One of the major players in the garden seed mail-order business is Park Seed In South Carolina.
We have purchased garden seeds including hot and sweet peppers for years from them. My County Fair Prize winning Patti-Pan (Sunrise) squash came from Park Seeds.

it is if you've got good light and they like to be HOT---most pepper plants just sit there and wait for the heat of summer before they begin to really grow.

Sorry, but I've gotta know--are you a native English speaking ex-pat living in Norway? Your English is perfect and if you are Norwegian I'm really impressed (and would love to know how you learned it so well).

hehe. I used to run a restaurant here in Bergen, Norway, called Jacobs. We served the best (and only, as far as Im concerned) homemade burgers in Norway. They were called Big Jakes, so thats were the name came from. Even some of the top chefs in Norway called them the best :D. As for my english, I am norwegian-american. My mom in from Chattanooga, TN, but Ive lived all my life in Norway. Im touring (hehe...) Louisiana and Texas for most of november, so feel free to tip me on events or other things I should see while Im there. My email is haatuft@yahoo.com
Id love if you sent some seeds, UncleVic! Ill send you some polarbear cubs in return ;)

Can we assume you are going to New Orleans? I'm planning my next foraging trip there myself so I'll share my planning if you are.
