Where to eat in DC??? Sat, 04/5/03 9:43 PM (permalink)
Just spent four hours walking around with guests looking for somewhere to eat in DC. Apart from Ben's Chili Bowl and the Florida Street Grill, any suggestions for a good meal in DC?

The Florida Avenue Grill is a favorite for breakfast (sweet apples!!!) and we also in our visits really like "The Diner". It's a very, hip but honest retro looking but eclectic place in Adams-Morgan. Good omelets and breadstuffs. Strong Coffee. (2453 18th St., NW (bet. Belmont & Columbia Rds.).

Adams Morgan has a lot of good restaurants, most of them reasonably priced. One of my favorites is Mixtec, a Mexican restaurant/carry out located at 1792 Columbia Road, NW. Great food at good prices!

Normally I would say, "Any BBQ place that hands you your food through a window in the plexiglass." But I wouldn't do that with guests. It's not a very "Roadfood" place, but Bistro du Coin at 1738 Connecticut Ave NW 202-234-6969 is amazing! The best salad and steak I have ever had! Casual French, with real live French people crowding around the bar. A great place to take people. Down the road a few blocks, around Dupont Circle, there are some really nice places. Also, surprisingly, the train station has a food court that is great! Capitol City Brewing and Old Glory BBQ are popular, but I can't vouch for them myself.

I was thrilled by my dining experience at Cities restaurant in DC.

          Cities
          2424 18th St NW (Columbia)
          Washington , DC 20009
          Phone: (202) 328-7194
          Cuisine: Eclectic/International

I had the lobster served on top of black risotto. Another dish I tried was a fabulous beef filet. Oh! I cannot forget to mention the Octopus starter. It was incredible! The wine selection was also great and the servers were very knowledgeable about the wine and menu items.
After a very nice dinner, go across the street to the Blue...a fun club. Cities will be hoppin soon after that w/a club like atmosphere after all dinners have been served.

          Have tons of fun!!

Just returned from DC in early March.
Classy, but not Roadfood, is the S17.95 all you can eat buffet lunch at The Commons, inside the Smithsonian Castle. Nice touch in a nice atmosphere.
Real good BBQ at the CapitalQ BBQ on the edge of Chinatown, near the MCI Center.
Great brisket, but even butter, sliced, smoked turkey breast.

If you want to venture a few miles out of the District, you HAVE to try 5 Guys Hambugers. They have a few locations in Northern VA and they are OUT OF THIS WORLD! You have to order the fries as well. They are cut fresh daily and are outstanding with a little malt vinegar.

May I second the suggestion for 5 Guys. In DC, there is 5 Guys and everyone else. Head down 95 from DC, take King Street West, you'll see it at the corner of King and Beauregard. Worth the trip from just about anywhere.

The best D.C. restaurants are in neighborhoods away from the tourist attractions for the most part. I would send you to Connecticut Avenue, right at the Woodley Park Metro stop. There are a dozen restaurants in a long block. One of my favorites is Lebanese Taverna, which has a huge assortment of appetizers, and wonderful entrees, and is not terribly expensive. You can make a meal out of appetizers and the portions are huge. In this same block, you'll find Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, Indian, small markets, ice cream, and then you are just two blocks from the National Zoo. Above the Zoo, still on Conn Ave, are a whole 'nother series of restaurants and food markets. You can jump on the Cleveland Park Metro here and ride it back to wherever you need to go.

DC - best place to have breakfast is Parkway Deli - also home of the *best* potato pancakes in the entire world, best matzoh ball soup (or if you're like me and think matzoh balls are gross they'll serve it without the matzoh balls - and it's the best chicken soup ever.) it's in silver spring on grubb road (don't hold it against the place...)the waitresses have been there forever - they will always remember you. one has seriously been there for 25 years. they were on the food network once - best delis. the "delight" sandwich is also unspeakably good.

other great spots (i'm waxing nostalgic) - awesome pizza - thin thin onions and roasted red peppers at Vace - there are 2 - one in cleveland park and one i think in bethesda.

yanyu (not roadfood) has excellent upscale chinese in the same strip mall on connecticut ave that Vace is in.

tara thai is very good - there's one in bethesda and one i think in arlington - definitely worth googling or otherwise looking up - the whole fish is excellent.

i agree with another poster about lebanese taverna - it's wonderful...there's another spot in woodley park that a friend of mine loves calls mezze...it's turkish and apparently is very authentic - lots of native turks being passionate and dancing on weekends.

DC has a ton of great southern food - the 14th street corridor used to have a place called "the rib pit" it was, and your only contact with your server was through 3 inches of bullet-proof glass. the bbq was worth it though...

those are some of my favorites...but i haven't lived there in a while...

My favorite Chinese restaurant in the world, City Lights of China, is on the east side of Connecticut Ave. just a few blocks uptown from DuPont Circle. If you go there, try the crispy fried shredded beef. It's the best Chinese beef dish (and maybe the best Chinese dish of any kind) I've ever had, and I've eaten it at City Lights every time I've come to D.C. for more than 20 years. The restaurant can have long waits on weekends, so be warned. It's also popular with celebrities. I was once there one night after the Rolling Stones dropped by, or so the restaurant manager told me.

Just came back from a fun restaurant called Whitlow's on Wilson, located in Arlington, VA, in a neighborhood called Clarendon -- half price burgers on Mondays! Would recommend this restaurant to residents and tourists alike. From their website: http://www.whitlows.com --

The Whitlow’s tradition began on the corner of 11th and E Street, NW, when David Whitlow opened his bar and grill to the public in 1946. Over the next 25 years, Whitlow’s became an unmistakable landmark in downtown Washington.

Greg Cahill purchased the restaurant in 1971, but changed little of the tavern that had become so much a part of the city. In 1989, Whitlow’s closed its doors to enable a mass redevelopment of that site. It was the first time in 18 years, excluding Christmas and the filming of a scene in Broadcast News, that the grill was closed. Unfortunately, the redevelopment never materialized.

Greg and Susie Cahill re-opened Whitlow’s on Wilson in November 1995. Some points that may be of interest to you are:

                          *
The bar back is from the original Whitlow’s.
                          *
The Stove in the front vestibule was once used to cook the famous Whitlow’s turkey dinners.
                          *
The booths and some of the trim work are from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at 10th & G Street, NW.
                          *
The Host stand is from the original Woodward & Lothrop at 11th & G Street, NW.
                          *
The chairs are from the old Arlington County Courthouse building.
                          *
The bar top is an actual bowling lane out of Baltimore, Maryland.
                          *
The stained glass windows are from Susie Cahill’s home where she grew up in River Forest, Illinois.

marberthenad, how in the heck do you parse your name?? :)

I second the Parkway Deli recommendation, and also suggest their latkes, lox, and eggs - yes, it's two big potato pancakes each draped with a (fried) egg and a nice piece of lox. Oh, and a whole bagel and applesauce on the side.

Also: roast duck soup at Eat First in Chinatown. Otherwise you might as well go to the 'burbs for real Chinese (for example, Joe's Noodle House on Rockville Pike).

Finally: not roadfood, though not expensive, Jaleo near the MCI Center (and apparently the newer one in Bethesda is now as good) has wonderful tapas.

yeah it's a bit of strange screen name -- it's the first three letters of our family's four members.

haven't tried Eat First yet, but went to City Lights for the first time tonight.

Also, for other DC-ers, have you ever tried Henry's Carryout on U Street? I walked by it tonight and noticed they advertised soul food.

It's our annual custom to spend a day in D.C. for the Cherry Blossom Festival. (See picture of our daughter Tabitha last year:http://jennie.8k.com/cgi-bin/i/images/cbdangle4-4.jpg)

Afterwards, we always go to lunch in Chinatown for Dim Sum. We used to go upstairs to Tony Cheng's Seafood Restaurant (which serves Dim Sum for lunch), but we've found lately that their neighbor, Lei Garden, is even better. We haven't tried Tony Cheng's Mongolian Barbecue, though.

                                Lei Garden Restaurant

629-631 H St. NW (216-9696). Best known for its lunch buffet (11:30am-3pm daily, $8.95) and excellent dim sum, served on the 2nd fl. until 3:00pm weekdays and 2:30pm on weekends. Most dishes range $10-22. Try the wonderful crispy sesame beef ($11.95). $8 minimum for credit cards. Open M-Th 11:30am-11pm, F-S 11:30am-midnight, Su 11:30am-10:30pm.

                                Tony Cheng's Seafood Restaurant

619 H St. NW (371-8669), on the 2nd fl. of a garishly decorated building. The restaurant consists of a large room with enormous chandeliers and visible lobster tanks. Full dim sum brunch served daily 11am-3pm. Lunch specials $7-11. In Tony Cheng's Mongolian Restaurant downstairs, patrons choose from a buffet of meat and vegetables, which are then stir-fried by the ultra-coordinated cooks. Lunch: one serving $8.50, all-you-can-eat $15. Open Su-Th 11am-11pm, F-Sa 11am-midnight.
