I was thinking about hitting Chesters as well, but didnt have the stomach space :-)

I also confirmed while I was in that area last week that good old Hydes is still up and running - that place looks like it is right out of the 40's - and it is! (est 1946)

Bonk - just a bit north of the original Richard's location, the same location I think you are referring to because the massive shopping center across the street had a putt putt course on the north end of it - there used to be a giant statue of a chicken. I dont recall seeing it, though it was dark when I went through there.  Is the chicken still there, and if so, what was it associated with (if you recall, I don't)?

edit: was this it?

So I did try Freddie's a few days ago. I was happy.

I didn't eat lunch that day and it was 6:30, so I got the hot dog combo and the double cheeseburger. You can't go wrong with a Vienna hot dog, and theirs comes on a toasted potato bun, which is a nice touch. A hot dog, shoestring fries and a fountain drink are $5, which is pretty good.

The burger was good as well -- I give it a 'B'. The only reason I don't give it an 'A' is it didn't quite have that great intense burger-y flavor.

It was busy but the food came out quickly, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I'll definitely go back, and probably sooner than later.

We like to hit Chester's on the way to Oxford for hockey games on cooler days in the fall or early spring. We eat on the hood of our car, and when it's cool enough the pizza keeps well in the car. Plus it smells delightful when we come out of the game. :)

Bonk, tried to PM you, but your inbox is full - did you hit the dog stand at Eastgate?

No, TJ, I haven't seen it there. Probably, as I mentioned to you privately, the same folks that were set up in Arthur's parking lot a couple of summers ago.

Seems I can only have one PM, so it goes full as soon as I receive one.

anyone hit this place

and if so, how was it?

Polly reviewed this today, and I hadn't even head of it prior to now

This is a southern Indian restaurant, so they have a lot of dishes - dosa, idli, vada, etc - you wont find at most local Indian restaurants, which almost all tend to feature Northern Indian dishes

Pera Mediterranean in Mt Lookout Square, where Bettas was for a long, long time is being redeveloped as - - - - a half price sushi joint

so, if I am counting this right, thats now three half price sushi joints side by side by side

bizarre

Oh yeah, sorry TJ, missed the end of your post about Hamilton. No, I don't recall a giant chicken in that area.

We stopped at Richard's Fairfield location on the way to Oxford. We both got the steak hoagies, and man were they good. They look a bit small but I think they get pressed down, panini style, because they're quite filling despite their apparent size. We also tried the pepperoni balls and the parmesan balls, and both were 'B' quality. We ordered a pizza for the next day so we didn't have to go out. The pizza was very good, but not as good as Chester's.

So after years away from both, my original opinions have been re-enforced: Chester's has the better pizza and Richard's has the better steak hoagie. Great places, both.

No great loss, but both Lime locations (Clifton and Norwood) closed abruptly last week after Ruby Tuesday sold off the company and shuttered all corporate locations.

200 West in Clifton (which took over the former Smiling Moose spot, which took over the former Chicago Gyros spot) has also closed. I doubt it lasted six months.

Liked the salsa bar, tacos, and queso at Lime in Norwood - always crowded, weird they closed a profitable business

Depot BBQ in Madeira opened a week or so ago in the old train station that has seen the death of so many other businesses

They are not smoking their own meat for now, and are instead bringing in pulled pork and pulled chicken from Pit to Plate in NCH, and burnt ends, brisket, smoked turkey, and ribs (weekend only) from Smoq

Owner indicates he plans to start smoking some of his own meats by the end of 2015

Their house specialty items is any smoked meat on Freida's cinnamon bread, which is surprisingly excellent (had it tonight)

I have never tried Smoq, but a friend swears by the place. Pit to Plate, I have always liked. How are the sides?

I've only tried the mac n cheese so far, which was OK.

The menu says it is the same recipe once used at BBQ Revue in Oakley

A few Madisonville items
  • The second Green Papaya location is now open in Madisonville in the location that was most recently Demetrios IV
  • Looks like there will be a sweets/dessert place opening up next to Dragon City in the heart of Madisonville, opening probably around the new year called either Lolas or Lulus.  Sorry, not sure which Lala's Blissful Bites.  They have another location downtown on Main Street.  Website is: http://www.lalasbliss.com
  • A food trailer called Chow has opened on Madisonville on the edge of the lot where Plunkett's garage is.  Limited menu including burgers, dogs, wings, fried fish, chili and the occasional special (jambalaya right now)
  • question - has anyone had the "Marcellas Mud Beans" at the Madison Diner inside the Madison Bowl?  If so, how were they? Seems like they are mighty proud of this signature dish

It looks like Top This - a donut shop specializing in letting folks customize their own donuts, with an original location in Norwood near Xavier - is opening at Anderson Town Center.

Both of my daughters love donuts, so its almost certain I will be getting over there sooner rather than later

Matt Buschle, the chef/owner, reported this on his FB pages over the weekend. We are saddened by the news. We started going there a few times a year back in 2011, and it is one of our favorite places.

The last few times I've had Roney's since it reopened the roast beef was kind of fatty and gristly and gross. Chicken was outstanding and Lucky R fantastic, but the beef. How sad. Anyway, tried it again this evening and it was back to the basics. Delicious, lean, juicy and flavorful. Very happy!

I got a burger and the large roast beef with cheese a couple of weeks ago. I thought the burger was a little disappointing, both in flavor and size for the price, but the roast beef was spot on.

I think I just need to stick with that.

Looks like Andy Hajjar (of Andy's Mediterranean Grill) is opening a restaurant in Florence on Mall Road by the name of Kabobske

www.kabobske.com

Coupons are in the February issue of Reach Magazine.

EDIT:  This will be in the former Gold Star Chili location.  Gold Star is moving to the empty building just north of Kroger's fuel center.
