I stopped in to Cold Turkey Today

First impression coming in the door - mold.

None was visible, but it hung in the air like - well, have you ever walked down the stairs into a basement at an old house where the walls leak?  Kinda like that.

I smelled no food smells, including the one I had expected - roasting turkey.

Not a complaint really, but with a name like 'Cold Turkey' you'd expect a very turkey-oriented menu.  And turkey was present, it just wasn't a highlight. For example, 2 sandwiches featured turkey, while three featured chicken.

Aside from all that - a simple sandwich is 7 bucks.  No, there's no chips with that, those are 2 bucks extra.

I may get aroung to checking this place out eventually if I hear someone rave about one of the menu items, but I will not be an early adopter here.

I just wanted to bring up a point on overlap.  I undrstand the desire to keep the forums divided with Midlletown as a mid-point.  Cinci has already gobbled up NK.  When I lived in Middletown the area of Cin-Day rd was called the Cin-Day corridor.  The end result being one Metro-Burg Going from NKY to Dayton.  As such I cant see the harm in a comparrison of similat places in both area as they could easily fall into an area where people might experience both.

Since we are discussing pet peeves, britt (weren't we?), the road is Cincinnati-Dayton Road!  Cin-Day is a recent notation made up by a highway department too cheap to buy enough letters for the signs on I-75!  

Agree with your assessment though...when I lived in West Chester, I would drive to Dayton for special food I enjoyed.  Ollieburgers at the (long gone) Lum's in Fairborn, for example.  Or more recently, the ribs at Quaker Stake & Lube across the street from Wright State (before the one opened in Milford.)  I always considered it part of the area.

2. Eclectic Curio Coffeehouse (same strip center on Glen Este Withamsville Road) is closing; today is last day.
3. Fuji Japanese place is open; I haven't seen many cars there.

Yeah, it started as the Eastgate location of Burbank's, later became "Damon's: The Place for Ribs," then Eastgate Buffet, now Fuji. Have I missed any iterations?

I have only been in Brown County for 5 years as of June so I cannot improve on your list - we used to live in Westwood and previously Mt Washington but that was a long time back.  We did not get to the Eastgate area much when we were on the west side of Cinci.

Edit: local blogger VeggieOption reports that another fairly upscale eatery - The Reserve Piano Lounge and Restaurant at Eminent Domain on the Levee - has also closed it's doors

I live near the old ZZ's Pizza locale at Gilbert & Florence Aves.  I saw some people fixing up the outside of the building a couple of weeks back, and then @ a week ago a banner was put up saying "ZZ's Pizza Opening Soon".  I haven't heard anything about this.  Anyone else?  Their pizza was very good ~ kinda California gourmet pizza-ish.  I hope it is just as good.

Wow, talk about amazing timing. I'd never heard of Sammy's, but I was doing errands in Blue Ash today and about locked my breaks up when I saw a Nathan's Hot Dogs sign. So I went in and got a dog that comes with cheese, mushrooms and onions (but I held off on the onions).
 
It was pretty darn good, although the bottom of the bun split completely one bite in, making it a mess to eat. The cheese was excellent and plentiful -- I think it was a white cheddar, although I didn't have time to ask. It oozed out everywhere when I took a bite.
 
The dog was $4.95, and fries are $1 extra, which I got. Those were also good. A slightly thicker version than I'm used to, but they were well done so they didn't taste like potato.
 
I'd definitely go back on occasion, but at $6 for a dog and fries it's not a bargain.

Any German food and culture lovers  out here?
I remember a wonderful place in Cincinnati that had closed about the turn of the century.  I cant remember what road it was on but it was a lovely country dive heading towards the river.  Im sory the name secapes me.  It had been around forever and was a local landmark and a fabulous place for great family memories.  Unfortunately I only found out about it just before they closed down.  It was an old landmark and a lovely place to go.  They offerd a price fix menu made from scratch daily.  The husband and wife were the Chef/Manager team.  The servers were all singers and actors and they always put on a well known musical!
Its such a shame when a treasure like that is gone for good.  There is nothing in town of its like any more.

Our lunchbunch group ate at the Forest View Gardens Restaurant shortly before it closed - it was as tasty as the Black Forest - what a shame to see them both gone now!

It was on North Bend Rd in Monford Heights - nowhere near any real river (maybe the Little Miami runs near there but it is a creek if it ran in that area.)

I can't believe it was that long ago.

We were heading down to do something around Bridgetown.  it was a nice Sunday and just took the long way.  We were going down North Bend and  i first saw the place.look on a map.  if you go much farther you are going to get wet.  We went the last few weeks they were onpen  I was thinking it was 2000 as we moved to middletown in dec of that year they were already closed.

I lived in the area from 1985 thru 2004 - you can't get too wet til you hit the Ohio River, as far as I know.

Thought I'd post a few pictures from a local roadfood favorite, New Orleans to Go.  :)  We didn't get to visit there more than a couple times before they closed, and this is our first visit since they reopened. 

This was the special listed on the blackboard: half a glazed tilapia po' boy with coleslaw and a side order of red beans and rice.  My husband reported that it was excellent.  :)



The shrimp basket, which was my order.  The coleslaw is a bit unusual.  The dressing is quite thin and not as sweet as most places (I appreciate that, since I hate too-sweet 'slaw), and there's raisins in it, which is a new one on me.  It does go well with all the fried food.

I keep meaning to try something else, but the fried shrimp lures me back.  Light and crispy breading, lightly spiced, and the shrimp is cooked perfectly-- just until done, and not the least bit rubbery.  In fact, I took a close-up shot of the shrimp just because it deserves to be fixed in one's memory.  ;P

Had lunch at the new Cold Turkey downtown today.  Although TJ mentioned in his earlier postings about a smell of mold, I did not notice any of that today.  I'm still confused as to how a place called Cold Turkey has no actual cold turkey sandwiches on the menu (if you do not count turkey salad), but whatever.

I purchased the Gobbler which is hot turkey on Texas toast served Philly style - onions, roasted red peppers, banana peppers and Cheez Whiz.  I opted out of the banana peppers.  The sandwich comes with Cajun pretzels, which is the only variety of salty snack that they serve.  The verdict: Eh.  Mediocre at best.  The sandwich was ok, pretty messy, just plain average.  Nothing that left me wanting more.   I might go back and try a different sandwich, but not anytime soon.

My husband was curious about the oyster po' boys, but wasn't sure if he'd like them.  (We both prefer our oysters raw.)  What's the taste/texture like?  Are they still a bit runny in the middle?

I'll have to try their bbqed shrimp sometime, too.  I'm assuming it's like the other "bbq" shrimp we had in New Orleans, a rich garlicky butter sauce with parsley.  Gooooood stuff.

Good to hear, there was some buzz that someone was going to reopen it about 15 months ago but then I never heard any more, heck of an act to follow though. I PRAY, they got the recipes.

The whole German Butcher Shop/Weiner Haus empire flamed out over a year ago, for wurst needs, there are a number of shops in Findlay Market, if you can't your favorite sausage there, it is seriously obscure.

My beloved Tan Thai has changed owners.  According to the staff member I spoke to, the change occurred about a month ago, and the new owner has no connection to the family that owns the Tan Thai in Springdale - so now the two eateries are connected only by name and history.  The staff appears to be the same, prices ad menu have not yet changed, but the portion size definitely went down and the food quality (albeit based only on todays lunch) has gone down as well.  Basil Fried rice without any basil, hmmmm.  This is a sad, sad development for me.  Update 7/16: picked up yakisoba to go today, inedible. 

Flo's Plate Full of Soul is moving as I write this from their original location in the former Patoschnik's to 915 Vine Street, which is about two blocks away, getting ever so slightly into Over the Rhine

Went to the new Sammy's Burgers in Blue Ash.  Must say I was very unimpressed.  Burgers cost anywhere from $8-10 and include fries.  Hot Dogs cost $3.50-$5.00.  The burger itself is very disappointing.  Wasn't cooked to requested temperature.  Meet appeared and tasted of low quality.  This was somewhat covered up by the toppings(which were very good) and the bun.  The hot dog itself was good, but served on an unimpressive bun.  Fries were ok, the garlic fries added much needed flavor(although u pay for it later).  All in all, I don't think I will be back.  Think the burger and fries are much better at Red Robin (similar concept as Sammy's), Five Guys (cheaper and much better tasting fries and burger with good selection of toppings; the hot dog at Five Guys is delicious as well), or Terry's.  I probably even enjoyed the burger at Cheezburger cafe in Symmes Township more.  Can always stop at Hot DogginIt as well to get my hot dog fix.

Sorry to hear about the burger...that was the next thing I was going to try there. Sounds like we totally concur about the hot dogs.

Speaking of Hotdogginit, they're now selling frozen Gino's East pizzas (believe it or not, I've never had one before). We picked one up on Sunday, and it was pretty good.

The owner said she buys about 150 from them at a time. Business must be going well there.

Fuji Steak House is open in the Eastgate area. A guy I know took his family and tried the sushi. He says it's good --  not great, just good -- and he'd go again.

My son and I laugh every time we see the signs out front of Fuji: "Chef cooking in front of you", and "Having good food and fun the same time."

Went to the new Sammy's Burgers in Blue Ash.  Must say I was very unimpressed.  Burgers cost anywhere from $8-10 and include fries.  Hot Dogs cost $3.50-$5.00.  The burger itself is very disappointing.  Wasn't cooked to requested temperature.  Meet appeared and tasted of low quality.  This was somewhat covered up by the toppings(which were very good) and the bun.  The hot dog itself was good, but served on an unimpressive bun.  Fries were ok, the garlic fries added much needed flavor(although u pay for it later).  All in all, I don't think I will be back.  Think the burger and fries are much better at Red Robin (similar concept as Sammy's), Five Guys (cheaper and much better tasting fries and burger with good selection of toppings; the hot dog at Five Guys is delicious as well), or Terry's.  I probably even enjoyed the burger at Cheezburger cafe in Symmes Township more.  Can always stop at Hot DogginIt as well to get my hot dog fix.

I went to Sammy's Burgers in Blue Ash today for lunch...  I actually had quite a different experience with the burgers.  My hamburger itself was quite tasty, the beef tasted of good quality beef and was well seasoned.  The toppings on the burger were fresh and the bun was also good.  I didn't try the french fries even though they come with the burgers, I opted to upgrade to the onion rings which reminded me a lot of the ones at BW3's.  Knowing that it was the same owner there as at El Pueblo in Blue Ash I tried the Guacamole Burger hoping that it was the same guacamole as El Pueblo and was not disappointed in the least.

The other three people that I went there with all agreed with me and we will definitely be going back again to try some of the other burgers there.

Andy's Mediterranean Grill.  Wow, what a major dissapointment.  My wife is Lebanese so we know the cuisine well.  What we experienced here was mediocre food with the exception of a very good kibbeh.  The real issue was the price.  Dinner for two adults and a child was $85 with tip.  This was for a bowl of olives, three entrees and three sodas.  No wine, no appetizers, no sides, and no dessert.  This meal would have been acceptable if it cost about half that much.  I am not a cheapskate or stickler for prices.  I regularly dine at high end places like Boca or Ruby's where I will happily plunk down some major coin for a good dinner, but Andy's was a total rip-off.  I can't imagine ever returning here again unless they seriously revise their prices.  My entree cost $22 for two skewers of cubed lamb shoulder (the cheapest cut available) with maybe 4-5 pieces per skewer and some rice.  Seriously?  This dish might have cost the restaurant $2 to prepare.

Robin Hood, Mirage at Harper's Station has a menu that is influenced by Russian, Armenian, Lebanese and Greek cuisine. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. We've been there many times and the food is always very good.

Has anyone been to the Japanese Steakhouse Sakura off of I74 at the Rybolt Rd exit?  Used to be Dante's but they changes owners a while back.  I have heard that they have excellent sushi as well a great teppanyaki show. 

Margarita's on Beechmont has an ominous "closed for remodeling" sign out front. We were going to go last week when we discovered this.

They have/had decent food -- I have to pick and choose with my picky-eater girlfriend, and Margarita's was a good compromise.

Hopefully it is indeed a remodeling, but I'm skeptical. 

I had eaten at Andy's several times with girlfriends b/f  Playhouse in the Park productions.  A year or so ago, my husband and I decided to go there after a Music Hall performance.  We couldn't get waited on! I asked a passing server to find a server for us. No one ever materialized, even after another plea.  I think we were in customer Hell; you know that table in between stations that no one is responsible for.  After 45 minutes of no one waiting on us, we left.  I complained to the hostess on the way out (yes, I'm the mouthy one of the couple) and she just shrugged and continued to look at the TV.  I really had enjoyed it before, but there's no way I'd ever get my husband to go back there, and I'm not in the mood to patronize them again either.

I have to agree with everyone aout Andy's.  I believe I wrote a review here after the last time I ate there.  We were shocked by the menu prices, and when we saw the portion sizes of the entrees going to other tables, we decided to just order appetizers, which were small & over-priced, as well.

I also heard from someone that Andy was sitting at the bar one night talking to another person in Lebanese.  Someone in their party was fluent and said they were talking about the customers in a bad way.  The person said Andy thought no one would probably know what they were talking about, but should have been more careful about what was said.  He said he wouldn't go back, knowing how the owner felt about his customers.

Margarita's on Beechmont has an ominous "closed for remodeling" sign out front. We were going to go last week when we discovered this.

They have/had decent food -- I have to pick and choose with my picky-eater girlfriend, and Margarita's was a good compromise.

Hopefully it is indeed a remodeling, but I'm skeptical.

o; the food was boring and I had my doubts whether there was any liquor at all in the margarita. It could also be that Chipotle cut into Margarita's business.

In Anderson, our favorite eateries are Cafe Mediterranean, El Coyote (for margaritas, steaks and the carnitas fajitas), Anderson Township Pub (burgers and wings) and Pelican's Reef.

Sorry -- my message above got screwed up. What I was trying to say was that a bad economy -- or any economy -- preys on the weak, and restaurants close due to bad food, bad service or a tired formula. Main Moon was terrible, Margarita's was a big disappointment last time we ate there.
