Where's Uncle Billy?

To all you BBQ bloggers and BBQ fans out there - maybe someone out there knows what happened. Read on:

Some years ago a young chef named Jonathan St. Laurent opened a BBQ joint in South Portland, Maine, called Uncle Billy's Downeast Barbeque. They were rather successful and even published a cookbook back in 1991. I was in the area on a business trip back in 1993 or 1994 and ate there and had a wonderful meal. And the place really was a "joint". That was 10 or 11 years ago and I remember really enjoying the whole experience.

Then sometime around 1997 or 1998 I was visiting my brother in MA and we made a pilgrimage to South Portland, ME just to eat at Uncle Billy's. To our astonishment and horror, the place was closed. We asked around, hoping that maybe they just moved, and finally found a BBQ joint in downtown Portland that had the word "Billy" in the name and was reputed to be run by a couple of the guys that worked with St. Laurent at the original Uncle Billy's. But the food wasn't quite as good, and the atmosphere was definitely not there. We stayed (after all we had driven all the way to Maine!), but we mourned, we ate, and we left.

All these years I have been wondering what ever happened to Jonny St. Laurent? What horrible fate befell Uncle Billy's Downeast Barbeque that caused it to close? Does anybody out there know?

Seems I recall an Uncle Billys in Yarmouth.. Just about 15 miles up the road from Portland.
But I could never find it when I lived in the area, and I heard it is closed now.
Seems he located to Newbury street in Portland..after leaving South Portland.

I rarely get a chance to visit New England these days, but the next time I do I will seek St Laurent out again. I thought his 'que was pretty dadgum good.
