Where's the NFL Chatter? -2014 - 15 Version!

Football season is almost upon us----Free Agency is in full swing----The draft is right around the corner.
Once we get that annoying game they play with a stick, a ball some gloves and where everyone just stands around scratching themselves out of the way, we'll be ready to get 'er in gear!
So, what's your take on all the free agency moves thus far?
Anyone care if Johnny Football enlists in the Marines?
Anyone seen Sanchez's new Taco Truck in LA yet?

If Houston does not waste their #1 overall pick on Johnny Football their fans will riot.

I'll be watching the new Kevin Costner movie to see how it all turns out.

Houston fans should be careful what they wish for! Johnny Football has all the signs of being the next version of Ryan Leaf, but I'm a Jets fan so I've got my own QB problems.

Not too impressed with Tampa Bay's upgraded uniforms -- the original orange & white (when Spurrier took a beating as the starting QB in the 0-14 first year of 1976) is still the best.

I stopped watching the NBA after they stopped calling travelling, palming, hacking, and lane violations.  Worse, the 24 second clock forces the same playing style on all the teams.  If I need a freaking uniform to tell the teams apart, my interest is gone; I don't know what the Hell they are playing, but it sure ain't basketball.

By getting rid of kickoff returns and treating QB's like they are porcelain china, the NFL is on the same dismal, 'sameness' track.

No more than you have one in Gahanna that can beat the Bears.  But if you want to go by the very recent past, the Bears beat the Steelers 40-23 last year.

I'm afraid my interest wanes as the analysts dive deeper into the   "Human Interest"  stories related to the game, some rather indirectly at best.  I cannot say that demoting Pam Oliver from the Varsity sideline female reporter job to the Junior Varsity Locker-room aftergame Interview Queen would draw my focus to the coverage of one network over another.
I scan the Sunday schedule to see what games are being telecast here on the direct-tv channels we happen to have.  Then decide if any are of interest to me.  Week nites are easier, whatever games are running make good background  noise and video while I am playing on RF and doing my FB family gossip. Sort of replaces the background music of the old days.
Go Packers, Broncos, Giants, Colts, and even a little cheer for the Bears...and if Bridgewater gets established in Minnesota and gets the starting QB slot next  year I might even include the Vikings on the 'Good List".

As I live in Dallas and root for the Steelers now would be an excellent time for me to.

But, 'in other news' there is this Ray Rice matter.

After being arrested and charged with assault, Mr. Rice admitted before a judge that he had indeed hit his (then) fiancée.  Criminal punishment was assessed and he is 'paying his debt to society'.

As there have been over 700 felony arrests of active NFL players since 2000 I really cannot say exactly what constitutes 'conduct unbecoming', but the videotape of Mr. Rice dragging the inert victim by the hair certainly brought disrepute both to his employer and to its franchisor.  Accordingly, the franchisor - absent precedent and/or a contractual policy - assessed a two game suspension which was in fact a 'fine' in excess of $1,000,000 for the highly paid player.  As he had with the judge's sentence Mr. Rice accepted his employer's sanction.  All parties, most especially including the victim, assented.

    Case closed.

Even though the harsh monetary sanction his employer imposed was in large part the result of public disgust at the video of Mr. Rice dragging the inert body of his victim by her hair, all parties knew the nature of the crime:  assault and battery.

Just how does an additional video change any of the acknowledged-by-all-parties facts of the settled matter of Mr. Rice's despicable act?

It doesn't change anything but the feelings of the mob.  The last time I looked the Constitution forbids double jeopardy and ex post facto laws.

Mr. Rice's act was despicable and for all I know his wife, in that, may have been despicable as well, but, the United States of America is a Constitutional Republic, not a 'mobocracy'.

Frankly, it shocks me that after proper adjudication under the Rule of Law and after sanction from his employer, Mr. Rice's punishment has now been set by the mob.

Nothing less than the cornerstone of Western Civilization - the Rule of Law - is being trifled with here.

And so the question must be asked:

    Have we become 1793 France?

In some ways, I'd rather RG3 was out for the season. I've liked Cousins all along. He was awesome at Michigan State, he's had his moments with Washington. RG3 will be out for at least half the season, that's more time away from playing. He already missed most of last year. He's a third year QB with a 2nd year prep at best - and he may come back mid-season? Meanwhile, Cousins has been able all along - and proved against Jacksonville, that if the O-Line can do their job, he's more than capable of doing his.

When the Midget Megalomaniac blew all those 1's & 2's to move up and grab RG3 I thought it as crazy as Ditka's spending the Saints' future on Rickey Williams.

Then, after RG3's splashy debut I thought just maybe the Little Lumberjack may have done well, especially given Griffin's sterling character.

Then, sadly, one grievous injury after another to those Bambi-like legs.  I just can't see much of a future as an NFL QB for that wonderful gentleman.  Sad.  What a damn shame.

Will former Secretary of State Rice be the new commissioner? It has been mentioned on a few talk shows. It would be a dream job for her, and a way forward for what is IMO a business that has hit a slick spot and is headed for the ditch. I have nothing against Mr Goodell, and I don't suggest that I'd have made better decisions, but it may be time for him to fall on his sword, so that a new leader can get a re-set. BTW, I had no idea that he makes $44 mil a year.
