They have small steamer on the counter that they stick like 5 or so in at a time and they will do it. Otherwise, if you do not ask, they just slap the cheese on under the bun like you said. I didn't know either until someone turned me on to this little trick.

I love WC's. It's always amused me that the people who made up the names were the same ones who ate most of them.

If I recall in my first memories of WC in Chicago, they had no fries, no onion rings, no shakes and no cheeseburgers, just the original burger, coffee, hot chocolate and soft drinks. This would have been in the 50s probably. I recall the burgers costing 12 cents back then. I still crave them, but have to make do with the frozen ones, which I think are pretty good, considering.

I don't recall onion rings being available not too many years ago, but I'm pretty sure that onion chips go back a very long way. And I have to admit that I didn't know White Castle had milkshakes even today.

White Castles in the 50s in Indianapolis were a dime and you could get 12 for a dollar if you bought them by the sack. There was just the standard issue White Castle hamburger. You got it just one way.

I stopped at a White Castle in Indianapolis in 1953 while hitchhiking my back from leave to Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas. I was with another Airman who happened to be black. We ended up at White Castle because not one of three other restaurants we went into would serve him. Although I'd been to a White Castle in the past in the Bronx, it was that visit that made me a lifelong fan of White Castle and a lifelong despiser of Indianapolis. And you're right. They were a dime each

I ain't ashamed to say I love them. We don't have them in my area, so I have tried with great success to replicate them at home.

You can buy the frozen ones in supermarkets in your area. I have loads of White Castle restaurants here, but my son-in-law, who lives in Arizona, has to buy the frozen ones in the supermarket, and he says they're almost as good as fresh.

Love them! 1981 AL playoffs game 5 Yankees vs. Brewers friend gets up to get grub askes do you want anything ? Hell no! After game it's White Castle's for me. Brian sat down apologized for being a fool. We had 20 and 20 and just happened by parking on the side street got to WC before the rush. Back then when gas was cheap wasn't at all unusual to have a group of us skip the Friday nite bar sceen buy a baggie puff the hour drive and stampede WC. Rookies would order first 2 or 3 i then yell 20 cheese.Friends get older move on but until 1999 when I moved west I was often spotted with WC breath lol. Life has me in Beijing and WC has a whole nother meaning hold your nose and contimplate if I can hold it till I get back to my apartment.

Don't recall onion chips at WC when I was a kid and teen. The 12 cents was actually when I was in high school. My parents paid for them before that, so they may have been a dime. Am I mistaken about them having milk shakes? Maybe they never did. I know they had very hot chocolate, as I remember sitting in my dad's car with a date and spilling it all over my white sport coat, when those were in vogue. Do they still use the motto, "Buy 'em by the sack?"
