So where does White Castle stand in the eyes of Roadfooders? Personally I have a love/hate thing with them. Since I was a kid I can't resist them, but I stay away for months then I get the Crave once or twice a year. There are better burgers but what about these Sliders?

I get the craving every bunch of months, then afterwards, my stomach says "why did I just do that?" Although I like the way they melt in my mouth, I don't really like them ALL that much. I guess it's one of the few things from our youth that we can still get today! My nearest one is 45 minutes north in Toms River (NJ) They are open 24 hours, so that often means burgers for breakfast on my way back home from a roadtrip. Just a matter of time before our roadfood.com moderators move this onto the "fast food" forum.

Growing up in Louisville I was a regular White Castle customer, going there at least twice a week. I still love those little bombs but since I live in Tampa I can't satisfy my occasional cravings. The frozen White Castles are absolutely horrible. There is Krystal; but, not the same as White Castle burgers.

I like them but as there are none around me I'm limited to having them only while traveling. Oddly, when I lived in the Chicago area I went there on occasion but not really all that much...I didn't start missing them until I moved away. A few years back I emailed the corporate office and suggested that Madison would be a good place to open a store, seeing as how it's home to a major university with a strong reputation as a party school. I got a reply that Madison wasn't a candidate at the time, although no reasons were given. Brad

Oddly enough, there are WC outposts in several Big Ten cities including Ann Arbor, Bloomington,IN, MSP, MN and of course their home in Columbus, OH. Who knows what their logic is on picking locations? They are also inching closer to Madison as I understand they have now opened one in or near Kenosha. Good luck and keep trying! I find I have to put a lot of ketchup on the Krystal burgers, as they tend to be too dry.

I grew up with White Castles in Indianapolis. We have them here in Minneapolis as well but it has been years since I have been to one. I keep thinking I should try them again sometime.

When I was 16, my friends and I would drive to beautiful downtown Hempstead and eat them by the dozen (literally). That location had the distinct charm of separating the customers from the cashiers with bullet-proof glass and they passed the food to you through a turnstile. I had a few sliders about 5 years ago and was completely nauseated by the grease (which I suppose didn't bother me a bit at as a hungry teenager). Just the thought of eating one now is enough to make me lose my appetite.

Grease? There's no grease on Castles. They don't even touch the grill. They are cooked on a bed of onions and they steam, rather than fry. Oh, and they are Slyders, not sliders. White Castle owns the trademark.

I don't find the greasy -- slimy perhaps, but in a good way. I am always thrilled to encounter one. I'll bet they'd do spectacular at an airport. They are on my very short list of chains I enjoy.

White Castle might call them Slyders and trademark them but make no mistake it was the public that first started calling them Sliders and White Castle sanitized the spelling for marketing gain. We use to call them Gut Bombs too. Maybe White Castle ought to trademark Tummy Celebrations.

I know who started calling them sliders, belly bombs and all the other things. But, as I said, White Castle has trademarked Slyder. By the way, although I know other people have had certain intestinal problems with them, it's never happened to me.

From New Jersey, birthplace of the White Castle......They indeed are an example of,"They're so bad, they're good" I love anything you can eat a half dozen of, and not feel guilty. And what other meal let's you have it again....several hours later!!!!!!!! Fries are good too.

I also like their very small fish sandwiches. Their tartar sauce is not the best though in my opinion. We do not have White Castles in Knoxville but they are in Nashville. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

By the way,I agree. NEVER found a White Castle to be greasy...steamed yes,not Greasy(Just watch them being made). To me,the original is still the FAST food champ! Fast,as in get them faster than any other fast food place. Remember White Castle was there before that dumb clown was born...decades and decades before!

White Castle was founded in Wichita, Kansas in 1921, and that's where their first restaurants were located. In 1923 they branched out with Castles in Omaha. It was not until 1930 that White Castle opened its first restaurant in New Jersey, nine years after it's start. In 1933 White Castle headquarters was moved from Wichita to Columbus, Ohio when Billy Ingram bought out his partner to take sole control. The Ingram family still owns the company.

It may just be that I didn't grow up with this particular kind of fast food; I had WC for dinner back in late December on a road trip--we don't have them here in the South. Krystals were strong here years and years ago but now you don't find them too often either. I was really kind of grossed out; I wanted to wipe the aftertaste out of my mouth. I know they're legendary after-bar food and you're probably not paying that much attention to the taste. I have had small-s sliders prepared by a local diner, and I loved them, so it's not the idea to me, it's just the WC disgusting execution.

Perhaps the "wide stance" was necessary after all... Brad

There is a Krystal Burger located at the Atlanta Airport... I took the airline terminal connector train to get there when I was changing planes. It hit the spot... I like their little fried chicken sandwiches even better than their burgers.

We used to call them Rat Burgers for a long time but seemed to stop somewhere along the line. They are not greasy, never have I even seen a greasy one. They are steamed over the onions and then hit another steamer to melt the cheese. There is an after taste and a feel in your gut afterwards, but from some reason they are great. I can deal with then maybe a few times a year, but I sure do enjoy them when I get them. They do have good fries, the shakes are nearly undrinkable through a straw, and I've always been afraid of the fish sandwich & the breakfast sandwiches & the chicken rings. Straight cheese burgers!

I've been eating Castles for a very long time and I've never seen the, put one in any sort of steamer to melt the cheese. They just put the cheese on the patty with the bun on top.
