White Castle-aholic

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy a nice fat juicy burger but when it comes to real burger craving I must admit to my 30+ year addiction to "Buy em By The Sack". Problem is I left the St. Louis area in the 70's and can only satisfy my craving every few years. Yes, over the years I have bought the frozen ones in the Supermarket but it's just not the same. Even when I warm them in the oven on a broiling pan with water in the bottom of the pan so they steam, you still cannot duplicate that fresh White Castle taste. Enough rambling, just wondering if I'm the only one out there with this problem. Maybe someone knows a support group I can join!

Uggh! White Castle=White Death if you ask me. I know there have been threads about "good" chain restaurants, and I agree that there are some more interesting (especially regional) chains out there -- I have a fondness for Culvers in WI/IL (have they spread to MN or MI?). But White Castle? I'd probably go to McDonalds before White Castle, and I haven't eaten a McDonalds burger in at least 3 years. Anywhere you can get sliders, you can get a burger that's a whole lot better, and not really pay any more. No thanks to WC.

Piggie, You're right on the target for the WhiteCastle debate. You can graph the relationships between the White Castle Appreciation Rating, the Time of Day, and the quantity of Alcohol consummed by the reviewer. Thus the low end standard becomes the Tee-Totaler/at noon/ who thinks they are horrible. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the guy who stumbles in at 3am, after his favorite watering hole runs dry.... and thinks W C are better than any Prime Rib he's ever had in his miserable hungover, and not sorry a bit for his condition-life. If you haven't tested this system, dig out your graphing calculators and order a pitcher of Margarita's, after all- The Proof is in the Pudding!

The difference between WC and McDonald's is akin to the difference between Gridley's and a McRib sandwich. White Castle is superb, whether drunk, sober, or comatose! I grew up 2 blocks from one in Jackson Heights, Queens (a borough of NYC for the non-NYers out there) and it's still there 35 years later, albeit with a modified menu. Do any devotees remember that you used to be able to order breakfast there? They had the little Kellogg's 4-oz. boxes of cereal I live in CT now and don't get back to the hood too often, but whenever I'm at a Mets game or La Guardia, I pick up a case.

In Knoxville, TN, we do not have White Castle's although we have Krystal's. I think they are pretty similar. I believe the White Castle has a more extensive menu. The Krystal burgers are also good, soft and a lot of flavor, but their service tends to be slow. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

My first experience with "gut bombs" was a drunken border crossing in either Detroit or Buffalo. Wouldja like six or a dozen was the question. I don't remember my reply but it was fun and I survived.

WOW....Thanks for reminding me about the smell. For a short minute there it all came back to me. I cannot believe someone actually tried to compare them to McDonalds and as I have never found a "slider" anywhere else that tasted as good. There was a place in Salt Lake a few years back that started serving them but when I tried them they tasted awful. Please oh please will someone franchise a WC out west.

If you are in an area where White Castle is out of reach you should try the sliders at the Cheesecake Factory. It's the only thing I eat there. You get about six ground patties complete with onions and pickles. It is on the appetizer section of the 25 page menu

MoBob, how did you do it. I ate 4 one time and they were good, but I could never hold a dozen. Same with Krispy Kreme. I ate 6 of those one time and regretted it about a hour later. They got larger as time went on. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Don't really know as I am not known to be glutton but when it comea to those tasty little suckers I just can't get enough. It's a one of kind taste that I can't resist. Back when I was a teenager some buddies and I used to go to one of the old St. Louis joints. I held the record for the group at 21 in a sitting. I suppose that's how they got the name "sliders". They just slide right down.

I have 6 sons...back when they were in their teens and lower, we would get the '5 for a Buck' coupons and go in to get $20 worth of Belly Bomber's. 100 of those little boxes would disappear in no-time with my boys and I Their Mother and the 2 girls would refuse to sit with us because of the stares we got from the other folks in the place. So we would make them stand on line for their own order of watercress tea sandwiches...or whatever they decided to order.

Not quite as thin as a White Castle, and at $1.05 each, more expensive, but these delicious little lovelies cooking on the grill at The Hamburger Inn in Sioux Falls have a similar stay-with-you-all-day aroma:

Whoa guys, remember I said back when I was a teenager. A 17 yr old playing sports year round and working in the hay fields for money has a lot more energy, stamina and appetite (according to my Mother at the time) than a room full of 47 year olds who have had more than their share of Road Food, Beer and the occasional Tequila over these blessed years. My old stomach ain't what it used to be, but I still say I can get down 12 of those little darlins' even today.

Anyone remember a regional chain called Blue Circle? I think they were pretty much limited to East Tennessee. Their burgers were close cousins to the Krystal variety. As far as I know, all the Blue Circles are gone now except for one, which still operates in Bristol. I'll be doing a column on it for the Kingsport Times-News soon. Fred Sauceman

I use to hang out at the Blue Circle all the time. I had lunch every day there for almost a year in Knoxville, TN. I had their "steak sandwich" which was not steak at all but tasted pretty good. I do not know what happened to them and I have not seen one in 30 years. I think the Krystal got them. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN
