White House Subs - Atlantic City, NJ

Had been in "AC" the weekend of Feb 7th, 2009 and the first stop when getting into town had to be none other than the White House!  It had been a good while since I had been there last and usually when I do go...wind up getting take out.  This time decided to sit inside the resturant and grab some pics!

Looking across the street - Trump Plaza

and Ceasars

Famours for what I like to call "Hoagies" or I guess .....

View of the front register/counter space

Lots of Famouse people have been in and out of this place

The menu...

Looking towards the rear of the building...

and finally....a mushroom and fried onion cheesesteake (w/provalone) and mayo!

and an Italian Hoagie to go along with it...I had a couple other people with me to help eat it all

    No bargains there.
    Obviously, worth the price asked.

I was a little surprised at the price.  But they do look like top notch and generous subs.

Just to verify...we did order the "full" steak sandwich which ran about $15 or so but as you can see...can easily feed two people (basically two sandwiches sold/served as one) and order the half Italian sub which is a good size to split/taste.

Oh yea, don't know about the mushrooms but could very well be canned???  I personally thought there were too many on there to begin with...almost as many mushrooms as there was actual meat!?

Very nice report and photos.  Thanks!  This definitely made me realize it has been too long since I have been there.  I enjoyed everything, but was most impressed by the bread.

Both sandwhiches were very good, better than most but certainly not the best I've ever had.  I still like to stop by and get 'em when I'm in the area though...

I've never heard of a cheesesteak with mayo. Natives usually get pizza sauce instead. Try it, you'll like it.

    Hello all ,

Have been there afew times and they are very good subs , not the best I've had but above average , just like the prices .

Take in the ambience , sit at  a booth  and think of AC from the glory days of Frank Sinatra , and all .

    Thanks for the compliment, friedclamfanatic......
A few of my closest Roadfood.com buddies swear by the place, plus the newest  new guy I'm dating says it's his favorite cheesesteak...
.....they love saying "White house! White house!"

However, I think it's overrated........(please keep in mind that I've never had the Italian sub there or anywhere, as it's not my thing, so I can't judge it.)
I've got places I like way better for tuna subs, like VIC'S SUBS (in Absecon and Egg Harbor Township), and DINO'S in Margate...

the White House cheesesteak price is about $2.00 more than the local going rate.  Most other places are still about $5.50 for 1/2 a cheesesteak...

    Ellen,

I'm a big fan of Dino's in Margate- for cheesesteaks and their grilled veggie. Yes, a grilled veggie- it's healthy.

So is this cheesesteak a worthy competitor to one from Geno's Pat's or wherever else you lucky Philly folkes go.

Supposedly the bread is great?  So, do you all think that bread looks great?

Great report, S_B_Man18.  I'll bet that the neon signs outside look great lit up at night.

I'm surprised at the agreement that the quality of the sandwiches is just so-so.  I thought I'd read posts that White House Subs was the best sub shop on the planet.  Or, am I confusing it with another similarly-named sub shop in NJ?

We were not impressed with their subs when we went either...   the ambiance was nice, the subs were ok, but we get better subs from the various corner subs here in Delaware & Maryland.    But then again, we've yet to find a decent cheesesteak in Philly, Delaware cheesesteaks are 5x better at least.

BTW, $12-15 for a sub is crazy an extra large that size here (i assume it's a 16"?) is $8-9  with a normal large (12-14") being $6.50-6.95  and small (8-10") for $3.95-4.95

MiamiDon...When it came to the Bread and the actual meat/steak, the quality was on point!  The flavor was very good as well but I think the problem for me was the way everything was cooked together and the ratio of ingredients... Too much mayo, too many mushrooms vs. not enough steak and not enough onions...the mayo and mushrooms overpowered the sandwhich.  Also the meet wasn't chopped/mixed up with the rest of the ingredients as much as I like....I like a mix of flavors in one bite...in this case...one bite all I got was meat, the next bite all I got was mushrooms, the next bite all I got was mayo...once in a while, I'd get a good mix of all three but just not enough...

Some people do swear by it...Don't get me wrong, it's good but just not the best.  And yes, it's the only White House...so it's definitely not easily confused with any other place

Thanks. When ever we go to AC my wife always bugs me to try White House, but I think to myself, "It's a HOAGIE, ferchrissakes!" And a hoagie is a food that has a limit; once it's as good as it gets, it doesn't get any better. And now we don't go to AC very often anymore.

We'll get there, some day. I won't skip it, but I won't expect heaven, seeing as how we get pretty damn good hoagies here in NE PA.

I think it's def. a  notch above Pats/Genos in Philly but I think there maybe a couple other places in Philly where I'd go first over White House...Johns and Tony Lukes comes to mind first....

The Bread was however very very good!

thanks Ann for thinking of me, but I don't eat salami and ham...
although I do love the rest of the sandwich, (provolone cheese, oil and vinegar, onions, peppers!!)

this thread is reassuring to me!  I just never really went WILD over the White House ........good to know I'm not alone, and I'm not totally losing my mind.............. as there are so many Roadfooders, as well as local AC area friends, who do go WILD over the White House.

Next time you're in White House, check out their hygiene.

The guys at the counter handle raw beef and then go ahead and make yourand others subs without ever washing or changing their gloves.

Hey s_b_man I was there at the same time! Came up from Atlanta.  The original Italian subs are excellent. The meat and bread are top notch.  As far as the value goes, you have to realize that the whole Italian sub costs a little over $12.00, but it's about 2 feet long. Double the size of most places.  IMO it is a great value for a sub of its quality.

It's not called an Italian sub at White House.  The default sub is an Italian; they call it a regular or, better yet, a special.
