I do. It's a pretty good s'uthern cookbook, and underscores just how thin the line is between soul food and cracker cooking. Lots of good stuff in it. Top

Harper Lee (author of To Kill a Mockingbird) said of White Trash Cooking,"I have never seen a sociological document of such beauty- the photographs alone are shattering. ...is a beautiful testament to a stubborn people of proud and poignant heritage." Where else are you gonna find a recipe for Mock Cooter Stew? Buy it, you'll like it. pb

Definitely a must have. Some of the recipes are actually more "Early American Pioneer" in scope and rely on the basics of every kitchen. Interestingly enough, several of them are in the 1888 Philadelphia Heritage Cookbook, which was considered a bible of good taste. The understated humor and letting the recipes speak for themselves is one of the best examples of a true American classic in any medium.

As a Caucasian-American, I am offended by the use of the term "white trash". I hereby demand that, should this racist book be reprinted, the title be changed to Cooking for Pigmentally Challenged Persons.

We happen to have two books by Ernest Matthew Mickler, "White Trash Cooking" and "Sinkin Spells, Hot Flashes, Fits and Cravins". I cant recall ever actually using a recipe from either book, but they do come down off the shelf from time to time just for the humor and especially for the wonderful photos in the center of each book. "Sinkin Spells...", p.4. Here we find our friend [Redtressed] being discussed by Loumie and Iris. "Cause you know what they say about anybody that gets her hair dyed that awful purple-red color, plus wearin them open-toed things on their feet. An what mother you know , would let her young'uns go barefooted 'fore May ist or 'fore the dew dries. ... Well ...she does kinda look like that Mary Magdalene with all that hair an everything." Cheers, John

I have both White Trash Cooking and the sequel, Hot Flashes, Sinkin' Spells, Fits and Cravin's. I really love these books; the late Mr. Mickler had a way of recording this type of cooking and talking, acknowledging the humor without being condescending. The photos in each book are masterpieces documenting an isolated, rural way of life. The names of the recipes alone are worth the price of admission: Tutti's Fruited Porkettes, Sluicy-Dab in a Foottub, No-Stick Peanut Butter Sandwich. Go. Buy. Enjoy. Now.
