Whither Smokey Bones?

From today's Columbus Dispatch:

"• Changes are on the way for Smokey Bones barbecue joints. The chain’s parent company, Darden Restaurants, told analysts it will pull many barbecue items from the menu and might scrap the name. There are four Smokey Bones in the Columbus area."

I figure someone must have tasted the food. Of late, all their advertising has been about salads, wraps, burgers and stuff -- not barbeque.

The barbecue is....well...dreadful, but no more dreadful than, say, Damon's for example. The SB's I've seen have tended to be very crowded, though perhaps the mix of food ordered has tended away from barbecue items and toward the lighter fare. Dunno.

In any case, if SB's does go under, it's no great loss. In fact, I would say that the closure of ANY of Darden's chain restaurants would not be a loss.

I used to enjoy Kent Craig's website and took his word seriously. However, all that has changed now that I have seen his review of Smokey Bones. He calls it the best pork BBQ he has had in 20 years.

    Strange he'd say that.

I've never heard of Kent Craig, but if Smokey Bones is the best Q he's had in twenty years, he's hanging with the wrong crowd. I WILL give it a sincere endorsement, however. It's better than some.

Smokey Bones is certainly not the best bbq I've had in 20 yrs. . . or the past month, it's a far cry from what I make, but it aint bad. It's a hell of a lot better than the worse bbq I've ever had. I go there willingly now and then.

SB's in Kennesaw, GA is unremarkable. Frankly, the foods other than BBQ are better. And with all the good BBQ joints in our area, I wouldn't go there for BBQ.

Famous Dave's pulled their restaurant here in Cincinnati not too long ago, but still has, I believe, the store in Florence , KY (Northern KY area).

My guess is that the midwest can only handle so many BBQ joints per city and the competition is getting stiffer, yet the price point per meal is still very high. Supply and demand.

Columbus is a TOUGH market too as you know with you guys being used as guniea pigs for many a chain/franchaise roll-out up there.

    Time will tell.

It's interesting to note.....A Roadfood group went to one of the best BBQ restaurants in the country (Moonlite) and we heard the science behind what makes a good BBQ place. One of the prevailing messages from the owner was that BBQ chains just can't compete because they lose too much money in the preparation of the food in maintaining a consistent product. Sonny's is one of the few which has been successful, and SB's may be in the same boat, but for my money, I never can equivocate a good BBQ joint with a chain-type place's BBQ. So I typically avoid them. BBQ is a "holy grail" quest for me, and I always try to find better - chains just don't meet the test.

Lo and behold, I just read in the Atlanta Business Chronicle that another chain BBQ place is opening several stores in ATL. "Jim and Nick's" is a chain which has several places in the midwest and Colorado, and here they coime to ATL. Maybe they'll learn someday.

SB is better than Fridays, Chili's, Applebees. Quite a bit better.

Is it as good as roadfood barbecue? I haven't tasted all of it, but it's probably not as good as most, and better than some.

I remember that; actually those were some of my favorite television shows, especially Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, and Step By Step. Long live Balki, Urkel, and "the Code Man"!

Read last week that the Darden Restaurant Group (parent of SB's) is going to completely reformat the menu at Smokey Bones with more emphasis on non-que items and only keep the ribs and pulled pork. I still think their pulled pork sandwich is a credible effort--especially when you're not close to a true down-home pit. However, a lot of the other stuff currently on their menu sucks.

    One,
They are based in Birmingham AL and I've been to the one near Inverness. Very good 'Q, als I know of one near Nashville. Definately better than Sonny's, FD's or SB's.

I'll probably check them out, but I cringe when I have a hankering for BBQ and skip the good places - and end up with a mediocre meal. Live and learn I suppose.

Thanks for the info Qfan. I'm glad to hear they'll be keeping their ribs and pulled pork as I sometimes get dragged there and it's the best thing on their menu.
