Who Makes The Best Hot Dog?

I love Hot Dogs. My wife says its an obsession. Always trying new brands to see if they stack up against my favorite. Boars Head, Sabretts, Nathans,etc... But although they are all excellent my favorite is still Koegel's. Maybe its because I grew up on them or just because they are the best I diont know. I look for new dogs in my travels to see if I can find one superior but I havent yet. What is your favorite Hot Dog?...Russ

Empire Kosher Hot Dogs, available at Bens Best deli in Rego Park , Queens...
    great garlicy taste!
If there is somewhere else I can find them (supermarket, whatever) I'd be curious to know...

Is Keoegel's available as an all beef dog? I'm not familiar with them.

If you're obsessed with hot dogs, you're at the right place ! The Roadfood.com hot dog thread!
I think you'll find lots of company. (Besides hot dogs, I also seem to be obsessed with pastrami , burgers, and buffalo wings...)

    Ellen,

Empire National Franks are made in the Williamsburgh section of Brooklyn. I have seen them in the NYC Metro area in supermarkets that carry a higher-than-average level of Kosher foods. I took a look at their web site, and they offer to advise consumers where to buy them. Their phone number is 800-339-6566.

    Thanks David,
Next time I'm in the city, I'll buy a 6 pack, and put them in a cooler to take back to AC.
They don't have them in my Jersey supermarkets...

Wow, there are so many good ones, but if pressed I would say Best's (Newark, N.J.) for a beef dog followed by Usinger's, Boars Head, Sabrett, and Nathan's. For beef/pork Thumann's, followed by Kocher's (German/Polish butcher shop), the Galloping Hill Inn Dog (made special by Grote & Weigel), Sahlen's, Schickhaus, Mucke's, and Hummel's. But there are many I haven't sampled, including Koegels.

Beef = Sabratt's natural casing (but I have only Boar's Head, Hebrew National, and Nathan's to compare to)

    Beef/Pork = Hummel

Both must be natural casing. While their may be many opinions on who makes the best hot dog, I think most of us can agree here that natural casing hot dogs are better than their skinless counterparts. Does anyone (who eats a lot of hot dogs) prefer skinless?

Dietz & Watson or Boars Head natural casing steamed slowly in a diced onion, seasoned salt & beer (a cold one or two in reserve).
For toppings...spicy brown mustard, relish & Texas Petes.

I'm not saying that Hummels are my favorite beef and pork dog, but I like them. They have a unique, tangy flavor and taste good deep fried or grilled. They are especially good charbroiled at the Glenwood Drive In in Hamden, Connecticut.

Miller's Provisions has been out of business for a few years. They used to be the dog at Super Duper Weenie. I preferred these dogs to Hummel's. From what I hear, SDW uses Hummel's now.

I like Best's, even though it's skinless. We taste-tested 16 different brands before choosing them.

Hoffmann's Hot Dogs, made in Syracuse, NY. Big and snappy. I like mine either slightly burned on the grill or deep fried, then on a potato roll with Woeber's jalapeno mustard.

My buddy actually works on the line at Hoffmann's, so I know what goes into them and trust the quality.

My fav nationally distributed hot dog is Boars Head. I live in Chicago and you'd think I'd rally behind Vienna Beef (which are perfectly fine) but Boars Head is in a different league.

On the flip side, I had a disgusting dog in Maui recently . . . bright red coloring, pork blend, yuck.

I have quite a few kinds that I like. The cheese weiners from Heans a local meat market are a favorite. Also Miesfelds, Hillshire natural casings are another favorite. Nathans were good also. The Natural casing ones anyway. One thing about Northeast Wisconsin. We have lots of local sausage makers. Lots of good brat makers also.

The absolute best have to be the natural casing Blue Seal franks from Chicopee Provision. They are available in supermarkets in northern CT and Western MA, or you can buy them onlinehere: http://www.bluesealkielbasa.com/index.html

I agree with you on the Hofmann's coney (white snappy), but I actually prefer Leih and Steigerwald's hotdog, which received the accolade of best hot dog in the country in the Rosengarten Report a few years back. Perhaps it's a flawed report, but it certainly means that Leigh and Steigerwald's can hang in there with the best of them.
I always went to the Syracuse location when I lived in the 'cuse, but I've learned there is now a really nice store on Rt. 31 in Clay, across from Great Northern Mall.
