Who else loves corndogs? Tue, 03/29/05 4:08 PM (permalink)
I love corndogs, but good ones are hard to find. I like the cornpups at Krystal but sometimes they are a bit too greasy. Does anyone have any suggestions for finding good corndogs, particularly in the South or southern Midwest?

I am also a corndog lover but as with meowzart can only seem to find them at fairs and carnivals. You can always count on the Big E for those giant 2 footers on a stick (Well, they look 2 feet to me). The ones in the supermarket freezer case just aren't the same.

Yes! With lots of yellow mustard : )

The ones I've made at home never taste as good as at the state fair. Maybe it's the age of the frying oil ; )

Someday, I hope to get my wife to truly understand the glory of the corndog, but I'm afraid I've got my work cut out for me. I think she's turned off by the sweetness of a lot of the batters -- oddly enough, although I hate sweet cornbread, I do like a little sweetness in my corndogs.

Now where am I gonna find a corndog!!! I think sonic makes some but Ive never been brave enough to try them, making them at home I think its more the type of oil than the age, but like deep fried oreos and milkyways corndogs are a definate fair food

You know--this topic has got me thinking (maybe thinking too much--thanks aharste), and there used to be this place back home in York, PA--can't remember the name but it was a 50s dinery type place that actually opened in an old service station. They had a mini corn dog basket. It was a whole bunch of those little cocktail weenies made into tiny little corndogs with fries. With mustard for dipping, natch. Boy that was good stuff. I think that was one of the few places I know/knew of getting corndogs outside a fair or festival. YUM. I wish Ben's did a corn dog or a corn half-smoke, with their chili for dipping. YUM. Now I am DEFINITELY in corn dog fantasy land! *********aaahhhhhhhh**********

Of course the place back home is gone now. Poopy.

We've got a couple of different frozen brands here, "Bryan" is one and "County Fair" something to do with a "fair" anyway that are better than nothing! My 8 year old eats them 3 at a time.

In my experience, corndogs outside fairs and festivals just aren't the same. Maybe it's atmosphere, maybe it's old grease, but they just aren't as good anywhere else!

                      Doesn't Sonic make corndogs?

I love them with lots of mustard too. They always do seem to taste better at a county fair.

For corndog craziness, check out this site. I love the posters.

Every now and then I find a good corndog in convenience stores. The only problem is finding them fresh. They get soggy when they sit around under a heat lamp. C-stores change brands pretty often, too. This makes it hard to find consistently good corndogs outside of carnivals.

I agree with you guys, gotta have yellow mustard. Nothing else works with a corndog.

I like corn dogs, but I would love corn dogs if I could find one made with a good quality dog like a Hebrew National,Nathans,Sabrett,Thumanns, etc.Every corn dog I ever had, had a bland cheap dog inside.

I'm with the general consensus. Part of going to the Lane County Fair is getting more than my fair share of the local Pronto Pup. Mustard, no mustard, doesn't matter. The local 7 11 seems to have them available, but somehow I just can't eat one from there. JAMESB

Who doesn't love a hot dog. First it starts with the perfect concept, meat on a stick. Kobabs and rack of lamb also follow this tradition. Then you add a hotdog with a corn based batter and deep fry it. Heaven on a stick.

                                BTW, Mustard.

Corn dogs pale in comparison to Pronto Pups.

I love corndogs, but only if they come from some greasy guy standing inside of 150 degree concession trialer. I have tried to make them at home and have came pretty close, but please do not try to pass off those things they sell in the freezer section of the mega mart. Mmmm corndogs. . .
I remember the first time I saw a corndog I was at a b-ball game my freshman year of college after I'd moved to the south. It looked great, I got one and it tasted great. I've loved them ever since. . . I used to get some good ones in a chilled and wrapped six pack at a little local grocer who made them. The kids always loved them when they were little. . . corn bread/hush puppy wrapped around a hot dog with plenty of mustard. . . what's not to love?!

Dune Dogs in Jupiter, FL. Good hot dog with a batter that had just the right bit of sweetness! Yummy

I have tried to make them at home and have came pretty close, but please do not try to pass off those things they sell in the freezer section of the mega mart. Barry in MI

You need to abuse the grease in the fryer first... Then do your corn dog deal! Works everytime...

Love the corndogs. Best ones I can remember were homemade on the farm by Grandma. Last ones I had were a year ago in Grafton, IL while on an eagle watching roadtrip. Saw hundreds of eagles and three corn dogs. The eagles were far better than the corndogs. Sonic does have them on the menu but I usually only go to Sonic for a foot-long chili cheese dog which is otherwise hard to find hereabouts.

Sonic definitely still has corndogs, and so does Dairy Queen here in Texas. (I think putting a good hot dog inside a corn dog would just be wrong, though. A corn dog is more than the sum of its parts.)

Love corn dogs, but only get them when I go to the fair each year. Have to order two, one with just mustard and the other one with just ketchup!

Veggie corn dogs aren't that bad with lots of mustard. When I was in school, we called them dip dogs!
I looked forward to those as much as I did the school pizza and tacos! I dip my veggie dogs in mustard and then into a pile of those dehydrated onion thingies!
