Oh Yes I remember Custy's. The BEST lobster buffet ever...!!! There would be 15-20 family members that would drive down from Boston on a Sunday and sit and eat lobsters for hours. The men and boys(cousins and I back then) would compete to see who could eat the most lobsters...the winer usally had between 7 and 8.

Whats the consensus on the Nordic Lodge...? Food quality, price

Am I the only one who remembers Custy's?

YES, I remember Custy's. It was a proto-Nordic Lodge: huge place with huge tables holding huge platters of food for people with huge appetites. I remember whole fraternities coming to Custy's and having lobster-eating contests.

It's not the best, but almost certainly the biggest in America is at the Rio Casino in Las Vegas. They serve approximately 900 items at one buffet, and they also have a separate seafood buffet. Neither is even close to being the best in Vegas.

Here's my vote for what may not be exactly a buffet, but it is close enough when I am sitting in front of it.....

The Dinner Bell in McComb, MS. A "roundtable" place that serves up really well cooked southern staples in an old house in McComb. Instead of traipsing all over the place, you sit down with a few soon to be friends and start spinning the center of the table. It's WAAAYYY better than roulette. YOu win on every spin of the table.

Wow, it's good to hear that the Manor is still going strong. My wedding reception was there back in the 80's, & the food was excellent! Because of their reputation at that time, I tried my best to finish the meal, even though that's very difficult when you're the bride. Even the cocktail hour was amazing!

I grew up knowing Shady Maple near New Holland, PA as THE place to indulge. My grandparents would always take me there on the way out to New Holland to buy animal feed for our farm animals. This place offers PA Dutch cooking at its best. Vegas buffets may be impressive but if you are looking for good home cooking in a casual and unique atmosphere (menonite women sure know how to cook) Shady Maple is a good choice. Breakfast is always of a high standard. For a real treat, dont miss seafood night...its the best!

Used to love Marie Callendars Sunday Champagne Brunch, but last time we went to Denver, all the resturants were closed!

For the life of me I can't remember its name, but there was a brunch buffet in Toronto that I always thought was expansive and wonderful. I assume it was associated with a hotel. I'm not even sure it was still there. Anyone have any thoughts on what it might be?

Where I grew up, Sunday brunch was synonymous with all-you-can-eat buffets. Soon after I moved to where I live now (where there basically are no buffets), I went out on a Sunday afternoon date for brunch. We sat down, and someone handed us menus. I kept looking around, and my date finally asked why. "Where's the buffet?" I asked. Confusion ensued on both sides for a bit.

My favorite Amish buffet around here is the Der Dutchman in Plain City, OH. Pretty standard country fare of fabulous fried chicken, beef and, ham. Also some of the best chicken and noodles around.

One buffet that I really like is here in Columbus at the Blue Nile on North High St.. It is Ethiopian food and with the buffet you can try several of the dishes instead of being lost on the regular menu. It is only available at lunch and it usually has a few lentil dishes a potato and greens dish that is great, and a beef stew like dish. Some of it is very spicy so get a dish of rice for mouth cooling. The owner is also very friendly and if you go there more than twice he will remeber you.

If you are driving across Missouri on I-44, you're really missing out if you don't stop and try the barbecue buffet at Johnny's Smoke Stak in Rolla.

I've been to Der Dutchman a couple of times, but I did not know they had a buffet. When we went we ordered from the menu. I don't do buffets, but I can't believe I never saw one there.

I was a fan of MC's Sunday brunch also. The one on restaurant row in the San Gabriel Valley was especially good with omelets and belgian waffles made to order.

Wellivers in Hagerstown, IN is my favorite buffet nowadays with sides that include turnips and cabbage and good fried chicken.

I think that it's only within the last few years that they started having a buffet everyday. I'm pretty sure that when I first started going there they only had them on the weekends. I don't always get the buffet because they have a lot of great non-buffet items such as chicken fried steak. But if I'm in the mood for fried chicken, it's defniitely a buffet night.

That would explain it. I've never been there on a weekend, and I haven't been there at all in about seven years.

Not the greatest buffet, but I said this place was really bad in a previous note on another thread.

The China Buffet, just off exit 18 on the NYState Thruway, (New Paltz)
is pretty good for lunch. My Granddaughters dragged me there today
and I had some pretty good chicken nuggets, excellent dim sum,
good pork on a skewer, good won ton chicken soup, and a large
dessert selection - cakes, ice cream, jello, fresh fruits, excellent almond cookies, etc. All for $5.50. Things change.... sometimes for the better.

                              Cheers, John

There actually is a GOOD chinese buffet on Long island on Route 110 opposite the Walt Whitman Mall. It is called EAST and it is filled with Asians all the time. They have great sushi, dumplings, dim sum, peking duck, all sorts of stuff. It is quite authentic- they have all sorts of Asian desserts. Most of the time I don't like buffets but this place is great.

I don't know how it is elsewhere, but here in the Midwest you can count on half a finger all the buffets that are worth what you pay for them. Normally the food's vile and the atmosphere is like the junior-high cafeteria writ large. Gimme a good menu place any day.

Let me add Richardson's in Hagerstown MD. A Menu place, but they have a Seafood Buffet on Friday Nites and Prime-Rib Centered Buffet on Saturday Nite. On Rt 40 about a mile off the I-70. We have visited it several times, the last being the night before our Meet- and Eat CrabCake session last Spring.
The Seafood was good, but the Prime Rib, large slabs carved off a Standing Rib Roast at your request, was outstanding. $23 either nite.

                                        Dearfolk,
A likely candidate is Shealy's BBQ in Batesburg/Leesville, S. C. on U. S. 1. Jackie Hite's, a couple of blocks over on Railroad Street, has a more elemental buffet, but a tad better 'cue and sauce.
As soon as I am able (dadburn this hurricane, anyhow), I'm going to take in Shealy's on Monday, when they serve their famed "liver nips." Eating those has to be a remarkable experience....
Always Hungrily, Ort. Carlton in Lovely Athens, GA.
                                        P. S. Shealy's is closed on Sunday and Wednesday; Jackie Hite's is closed on Monday. Their Sunday buffet is their biggest and best.

Is the Court of Two Sisters buffet in the French Quarter of New Orleans still really good? The last time I ate there, it was fabulous -- but that was nearly 20 years ago. It was the best buffet I've eaten by a mile.
