Who has the tallest pastrami-on-rye in New Y

The NY Daily News took a tape measure to pastrami-on-ryes from 10 well-known delis.

The NY Daily News wisely states:
"We're not picking the best pastrami — each deli has its fans."

I figured Carnegie would be the tallest in NYC. In Edison,NJ Harolds Deli might be even taller.

But Katz's IMHO is the best tasting. Hand sliced and would be taller, only the counterman serves up some of the slices to you while he is working on your sandwich.

One word: YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!

The picture of the kid trying to take a bite out of the sandwich is priceless!!

That definetly makes one's mouth water! Like I really want cube steak for supper now....
Even it our best deli's down here, which there isn't many, we'd be lucky to get an inch worth. All of our's are chain's that weigh their meat and seperate it with wax paper. This makes things more efficient...YUCK I say. Our deli's here mainly consist of McAlister's if you want to eat out, OR purchase pressed and formed pastrami from Publix and make it as high as you want it yourself at home......not to appetizing.

Gosh, that site deserved another looksee!

I, for one, hope you'll continue to contribute here, particularly in the recipes section.

As for Katz's, Marc Katz, one of the family, opened a place in Austin years ago. Barry, his son, runs the place in Houston. Long story, but all use the same recipes, although I'm quite certain the ingredients available in Texas don't compare to what is available in NYC.

It's our only real place down here, though, as to which Lone Star can attest.

Oh oh. Should I be worried?

Its nice to see the progress the forums at Roadfood.com have made in so short a time, its a segment of the food discussion genre that we at eGullet haven't really haven't been able to corner, even though there is the inevitable overlap. The Sterns are really, really well known for this sort of thing. I'm glad that the food discussion roadmap is now offering several great sites, it gets everyone more visibility that way -- especially as we are all competing against traditional media, who are not exactly quick to recognize our contributions.

Though it may seem like trick photography, (especially the desserts) I can vouch, having eaten here many times that the size of Harold's portions are authentic. Does the Pastrami sandwich equal Katz's? It's a very close call. I will say Katz's french fries are the best, though. Second Ave deli and Stage deli, in NYC, are both smaller, and not as good as Harold's, in my opinion. I think Harold's is better, and definitely bigger.

Bushie - you are right about the Katz's deli's being our only semblance of the "real deal". I am going to Katz's soon in hopes that my quest for some real corned beef hash will be realized!

I'm so old that when I first went to Katz's Deli on Houston St., a
sandwich was $1.50 which seemed reasonable at that time. But now
the $10.95 sandwich seems a bit steep, I guess I'm still living in the past.

Although I've tried the corned beef sandwiches at Katz's, my favorite was always brisket of beef (no lean for me) with potato salad & a Dr.Brown's cherry soda.

I went to Katz's dozens of times while I lived in the NYC area (Queens County).

No such places for a sandwich around this neck of the woods, although
there is a sandwich shop ("Speeds Hangar Deli" with an aircraft motif) nearby that makes a pretty decent roast beef with gravy sandwich & not too skimpy on the roast beef.

Maybe one of these days I'll take some pics of the place, scan the menu and try to give the lowdown on the place and upload the info to this message board (not sure at this time if that would be possible).
