King Sooper's (Krogers). Of course, I haven't had one in several years, so I don't know if they're still any good.

I gotta go with Bradenton Donuts here in the sprawling metropolis I like to call Bradentucky, Florida. A very nice Chinese family owns the place, and for about a buck, I can get an apple fritter the size of a Porterhouse steak. Since I'm diabetic, their fritters are unfortunately a rare treat for me these days, but damn they're good.

Whoever makes the apple fritters for 7-11 in the Westfield, N.J., area knows pastry. Ready for some sacrilege? I'll put this pastry up there with some of the best French and Italian pastries I've eaten. Just sayin'. The Bear

Our local Tom Thumb (Safeway) makes a really enjoyable apple fritter. However, I have observed that their size has shrunk by 40% (or so) over the past six months. (It really amuses me that the Federal Government alleges that inflation is minimal. When pastries, ice cream cartons, and cereal boxes shrink but the price remains the same - that is inflation).

The best I've ever had are at the Orange Blossom Bakery in Buxton on the outer banks of NC. They are called Apple Uglies there and you have to go early to get them but they are totally worth it.

I'll second the Apple Uglies from Orange Blossom. They come fried or baked, and the fried are just the best. Get there early, as they're really popular and see out quick. Their donuts are pretty decent, too. If you want to make your own Uglies they sell a cookbook with the recipe.
