Why do people eat baked beans for breakfast?

Hola!

Why do people eat baked beans for breakfast?

For the record, I love baked beans, if I was the richest man on the planet, I would still eat beans. However, I will only eat them for dinner, because:

1.) I do not wish to pass gas all day long, (which I certainly will do)

2.) Eggs and beans just do not go together.

I never knew people, mainly English/OZ people do this until I took a trip to southeast Asia and saw people eat it like this. I asked the English manager, "You guys eat beans for breakfast?" "Dont you fart all day?"

That's the question.

For the same reason they eat cold pizza and left over Chinese for breakfast. It gets you up and going! And, never had the flatulence problem either.

I've always heard if you pre soak the beans and then discard the water, you will get rid of the gas problem...or as Julia Child said: The Roots and Toots.

Mmmm...a leftover deviled egg and baked bean sandwich on white bread for breakfast sure can hit the spot!
It doesn't happen much...I mean, unless your deviled eggs just plain suck eggs, how often do you ever have leftover deviled eggs much less with baked beans at the same time.

Obviously, the thing for me to do, is make them ahead the day before I wanted to enjoy this childhood breakfast treat...but that might be weird.
(I like peanut butter and leona, or even bologna, sandwiches too)

I've lived in the UK for nearly 8 years now, and I still don't understand the baked bean at breakfast thing. I order my full English breakfasts without them. I have, however, developed an unhealthy fondness for baked beans on toast (cover with cheese for extra "mmmmmmm!")

    Oh, senor boogie,
Beans and eggs most certainly go together. In my Catholic childhood home no meat was allowed on Fridays, so Friday night dinner (supper to us) was either fried fish if our dad was home, or good ol' beans and eggs if it was just us kids. To this day a plate of fried eggs and soupy beans is a quick and easy favorite. Scrambled eggs are mighty good too.

The beans have to be soupy so the the eggs can "soak up" some of the juice. Luckily we had the perfect way to fix up a can of Campbell's or Van Camps -- pour some white vinegar on and some sugar on top of that. The original sweet and sour.

And I have served beans for breakfast along with eggs and meat, but only to good friends. They always eat it, but maybe they're just polite.

Beans for brakfast are fairly common here in New England, many diners serve them along with home fries.
Beans will give a little gas to those who don't eat them on a regular basis.
Just eat more of them, increase your fiber intake and that problem will pass also.
Try a couple of dropped eggs on top of the beans, served with a side of toasted brown bread.

Actually, I shouldn't be all that surprised. I've eaten barbecue & eggs before. Not sure I can take the leap to beans, though.

By "dropped eggs", are you referring to frying up beans and eggs together?

This is definitely standard breakfast fare in England, along with the eggs, toast, and bad sausage. In fact, baked beans are such a part of their culture that surveys have indicated that the majority of Brits seem to think that H.J. Heinz (the purveyor of most of the beans consumed in the UK) is a British company. Apparently, the British love of baked beans at breakfast also spread to parts of the world where there was British colonial presence.

I was talking to a British girl about the Heinz beans thing. She said that the formulation is different over in Britain, and that the closest thing in the US-made Heinz beans line is the vegetarian style. I think she said they are less sweet over there.

One can get the UK beans here, but a can is pretty expensive for daily use.

    Beans, beans, the musical fruit.
The more you eat, the more you toot.
The more you toot, the better you feel.
So eat your beans with every meal!

My first trip to Jamaica found me in awe of some vacationing Brits. They started the day with an early morning icy swim, "Rather brisk, I say", followed by a breakfast that included beans.

Mmmmm, I love baked beans any time of day, but the first time I'd had them for breakfast was at a place called Chez Vachon in Manchester, NH. I'd never heard of them for breakfast before that and I didn't want anything fried for breakfast that day and I really took a shine to them. Slightly sweet, rib-sticking and good protein for the day.

I try to take a Bobby Kennedy approach to most foods: "There are those who look at foods the way they are, and ask why...I dream of foods that never were and ask why not?"

Beans and eggs go together very well.

Baked beans or pork and beans with eggs and bacon/sausage for breakfast. Huevos rancheros and either refried beans or black beans as well…..

I'm getting hungry for beans, any kind!
Two points to make regarding flatulance: Jimeats covered #1: Increased and regular consumption of beans about eliminates the situation. #2: When cooking beans, add ezapote which is a herb grown in Mexico. Ezapote adds subtle flavor and dissipates flatulance.
Beans deserve respect on every dining table.

So just how much of the English sausages have you tried, Tedbear?
Where did you get all this knowledge of the English food? Just curious. Being a citizen of England myself I found your post most interesting; the "majority of Brits" would call it bloody rubbish.

The British style sausages I’ve had have been milder than a typical southern US style sausage, which is spicier. They tend to be more like a bratwurst in that regard.

That doesn’t mean they are bad, in fact, I enjoyed them very much. They are just different.

I like cold fish for breakfast. My family cringes! But NOT beans for breakfast. That does not sound appealing.

I soak the beans for 24-48 hours changing the water frequently. Personally or the family has not had a 'problem' after eating beans.
