Why does Cat Food have to stink? Tue, 10/26/10 5:55 PM (permalink)
I don't understand why ALL cat food that comes in a can, ie. not dry kibble, reeks. The finicky cat could be caused by this gunk that when it gers on your finger or hand ain't easy to get off the smell with 1 wash, not so dog food, any opinions here on this?

It's so dogs can tell the difference between the litterbox and the supper dish. See, one is for snacking, the other for nutrition.

Ahhh, I can tell you havn't tried them all Chewer. I have simalar complaints w/ most canned cat food though. There are 4 real finicky cats who insist I search out foods they like. My dog likes everything they don't so he hopes I get stuff that they won't like. That said...

Give the new Friskies "flaked" and "savory shreads" a try. These are not gummy and I almost tried a bite of the Salmon the other night. Let me know what you think.

Oh, and these cats also like the Friskies Seafood Sensations dry food. They insist on having that available at all times. I have treid almost every band of dry food and this, along w/ Fancy Feist dry, that they only get as treats is what I have found keeps them happy. Only as treats... hey that Fancy feast costs more per lb. than the good porterhouse steaks I buy on sale.

All this said... no one answered my quiestion, on the cat thread I started, as to when cats first domestacated humans. :~)

It does? Maybe the cheap stuff smells or I got used to it. Neither of ours was that finicky. They liked the pouched stuff and premium cans. The Siamese would eat anything and usually polished off most of one of my kid's supper anyways (and probably plenty else that I wasn't aware of). Both were fed lots of things you're not supposed to feed cats according to the books. One made it past 21 years the other 18 so I guess we did something right.

It smells because they don't waste the good stuff on cats.

Dawn, kinda like dogs, and like you know, it's ok to feed cats a little of almost anything. Not chocolate for dogs though! Cats need some stuff that dogs don't need though so you can't feed cats just dog food, unless they can eat some birds and mice sometimes. 18... 21... neat! Yes, you did allot right!

Saps, cat chefs make BIG money! I wish I had an IN to become one! Well, maybe not? But...folks love their cats and nothing is to good. Check out the prices of some of the preium cat foods, dry, and canned, and treats, next time your at the high end rocery, or pet supply store. You can buy Prime Tenderloin for less per oz that soma that stuff. And, like I said earlier... I almost took a bite of my cat's canned salmon. It looked and smelled great. But, you are kinda right. Some dry, and canned, cat food is junk. My cats won't eat it.

Ok, back to the Celery thread. Cats DO NOT like celery! :~)

Most wet cat food does not reek - from my experience, which is vast.

I believe the amount of wet cat food flavors are infinite.

This is because the cat food (especially the "gourmet" types) are made to appeal to the human which the cat owns.  Some examples:
                        > "Yellowfin tuna in a classic primavera sauce, accented with garden veggies and greens"
                        > "Yellowfin tuna in a savory tuscan sauce, complimented with long grain rice and garden greens"
                        > "Filet mignon flavor"
                        > "Alaskan king crab flavor"
Newman's Own even has an "Organic chicken and brown rice" cat food, where "the chickens are fed a 100% natural all-vegetable diet with NO antibiotics and the grains are grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizer"!

The barnyard cats of years ago were happy with the rats and mice they caught, along with whatever table scraps the farmer's wife put out for them.  Today's cats have been spoiled with "people" food, and therefore demand something more.

NYPN, I am no fan of tha cheeper stuff. I have tried to be but it's the gooey stickyness that gets me. Just hard to prepare properly. I can get past the smell but... my cats wont eat it. Of coarse they have never found a starved to death cat next to a bowl of any kind of canned cat food. :~0

Tiki, we had a ferrel cat around my house who would drag up 2-3 lb. Catfish for her kittens to feast on. It wasn't Salmon but... And why don't they sell canned Rat???

6star hit the nail on the head. who among us would bring a can of Rat into their home? Well... maybe some here would?

Nice cat menu options list 6star. Those cat food chefs make big bucks and now a few famous chefs have taken on the task of creating upscale cat food menu items. And yes... many cats DO own their humans. Mine included! :~)

Oh, my Uncle had a ranch and when I was a kid I would help milk the cow each morning. The barnyard cats would line up in a row and wait patiently for their squirt of milk. It was neat to watch! My Uncle taught me how to aim that stream of milk. I would wake up eager to go milk the cow and feed tha cats.

Not to change the subject, but while we're on the subject of litter boxes. Does anyone remember the "as seen on TV" ultimate Christmas gift for those who have cats: the automatic litterbox sometime around 2001-2003 ?
Both of ours were gone by that time, but if we ever had a contraption like that and it started, there would be no chance in hades that you'd ever get them to get near it again. Whoever designed that must have been the same person that designed that pet nail grinder.
