Why no Ed Sullivan type show on now?

Maybe with Bill Murray as the host. American Idol makes a fortune as does Dancing with the Stars, I realize it would cost a bundle, but a Sunday night at 8 or 9 timeslot, big name singers, Bands Comedy acts, DR. Irwin Corey[ ], etc. I think America would be glued to their sets. What's your thoughts? PS. cast the show and the first acts to appear

I think that ship has sailed ... deep into the sunset. Variety shows didn't abruptly end, they faded away, one at a time, one after the other. Read the history of Tony Orlando, one of the last ones to be on. They days when 1/3 of the whole USA could be captured by a single network show are also far behind us. Letterman, Leno: they are the only ghosts of that format still kicking and they are a far cry from Ed. Plus, entertainment isn't as simple as it once was ... No more three guy with three mikes singing "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah." Too bad really. I used to work for the guy who went on to buy American Idol and to buy Elvis Presley Enterprises ... If anyone could pull it off, it would be him. I am not holding my breath. Whatever happened to little Topo anyhow ???

The audience is more fragmented and there are a lot of options. If i wanted to see or hear the Doors in 1967, I could watch a rare appearance on a variety show or listen to the radio. Now i could see them on youtube any time i wished, buy their song on itunes and listen on my ipod and/or check out their website. On a network, I could watch one of 5 networks and a number of cable channels that act like networks plus I could watch cable channels devoted to westerns, mysteries or sports. There is a fragmentation that is part of modern life that is not going to go away.

The Ellen Degeneres show has a touch of that, not much talk but always a variety of popular singers, bands, dancers and some odds and ends. I don't watch it because she annoys me but I'm also out of touch with who some of these people are!

I think Chips pretty well nailed it. Plus, for every Beatles or Doors act, you had to suffer through 45 minutes of jugglers, ventiloquists, and dogs jumping through hoops.

America's Got Talent is pretty popular, and only really talented performers would be featured, I've seen jugglers on U tube that are astonshing, I really believe a show with say Garth Brooks, Snoop Dog, Larry the Cable Guy, a great Magician, etc. those kind of acts, would draw a big audience.

Hello all , I host a radio show where we interview national celebs , comedians , local musical acts and shoot the breeze . On WTBQ Radio in NY every Friday from 1205- 2pm EST wtbq.com AM 1110 and 99.1 FM/ I would like tot hink we are the radio version of a good ole Ed Sullivan Show , but whetehr we can get syndicated will decide that or not . From Last Comic Standing , America Got Talent, Comedy Central , MTV we have interviewed them all. With all the shows on the internet , you tube and all it would be very hard to get that national audience week in and week out . Before someone says "shameless plug " I dont draw a salary and am pleasantly retired and drawing a pension from the NYPD . I enjoy being on the radio and even more that we are keeping the faint pulse of the variety show alive !! Benzee
