Wild Alligator

Some friends brought over wild Alligator that they had bought at a Fish Market in Mt. Airy Maryland. They had marinated it overnight in a olive oil and Creole seasoning. I double dredged it and fried it in peanut oil. Heres the rub, so to speak, it didn't taste bad, nor good, as far as I could tell there was no taste at all, although the consistency was that of chicken. Anyone else have those results with Gator?

I've had fried alligator a number of times and you are right, no real taste other than the fried breading. Not bad, just meh.

Many years ago I used to go alligator poaching with a good friend who was an officer with what was then the Florida Salt Water Fish and Game agency. Jimmy, a Florida native, was in his 60s. What he'd do was take an ax with him and he'd sneak up on a gator while I was supposed to shine a flashlight in its eyes, and then he'd swing that thing and lop off the end of the tail. Smoked, that alligator tail was delicious.

Nope. Nothing like chicken -- more like sailfish.

Hey Michael..On Saturday, I went out on a boat with my friend; Lake George.....We're sitting in a cove and he's fishing..I'm sleeping.  All of a sudden, it sounds like someone jumped into the water.

I knew right away it had to be a gator!  It was..About a 12 footer.  Then we saw 3-4 babies just lounging on the river banks or on dead branches coming out of the water.  One baby started chasing my friend's lure.  They were all over the place!

So does gator really taste like chicken?

Baah Ben, next year you'll have to go down to the Fellsmere Frog Festival.  They serve both frogs' legs and gator.

Ruby - I think (I know) I'll be tied up that week.  But, thanks for the info.

I really should keep a "leg up" on these upcoming events.  Nothing like a good chicken dinner I say in Fellsmere, of all places.  Where is that? On second though..never mind.
