Wildwood, NJ with my friend Scott ..beach pics, etc

Monday, June 23rd, 2008 ...day trip...
My good friend Scott invited me to his Bally's Casino company picnic.
They have it at Wildwood every year, Jersey shore... at Morey's Pier
(www.moreyspiers.com)
unlimited amusement rides, waterpark, and all you can eat food & soda

It's a good value (for free), as it would cost $55.00 for one ride/combo adult daily pass, plus the cost of food.
Families could take 4 kids, so they they really save!

Me and Scott, Wildwood, NJ; Sea Serpent Roller Coaster in background

Look how FAR it is to the OCEAN!!! The Wildwoods are one of the few towns where the beach actually grows every year! (by about 3 feet)

SNOW WHITE has been there as long as I can remember

PRICES are NOT so CHEAP anymore, though

It's $13.99 for a 4 piece fried chicken dinner, with a "buy one, get one free" deal..... (a lousy price for just ONE person, though)

Even the hot dogs have gone up to 99 cents, and they are the real cheap tasting porky ones. Lots of pizza pies sit around; tried them once, they taste like frozen pizza.
I've had a decent roast beef once or twice in past years, though.

"Watch the TRAM CAR, please", "watch, waaaatch, watch"

MOREY'S PIER welcomes banner

Time for Scott to check-in , and get our wristbands

We waited 40 minutes in line for the food, cause it had started raining a little as soon as we got there.... so there was nothing else to really do but try and EAT!

Scottie getting ready to CHOW DOWN ..

Food was served assembly line style....it was slightly better than "standard issue" cafeteria food, mostly cause it was charcoal broiled. Chicken was best. I noticed SYSCO trucks parked nearby.

I went in for a closer look of the BURGERS COOKING

By the time it gets delivered to the assembly line, it's not so HOT anymore.. and the MEAT is NO MATCH for the BRICKYARD BURGER, Daytona

We went on some water slides, and 3 hours later, we went back for
ROUND 2 of FOOD!

The free DESSERTS at the casino employee/guest picnic were very
DO-ABLE (yum)

Great VIEW from the FERRIS WHEEL !

Another great VIEW from the FERRIS WHEEL!

There's the Beach Terrace Hotel in the back (blue awning), Bolero Hotel next to it; off to the far right is an example of new "condo rows" squished in...

Then we attempted the BEACH; I just went in up to my KNEES; water was too COLD, 60 degrees.
Look how expansive the sand is....long way to the water!

PLENTY OF ROOM TO STRETCH OUT !

No Jack-in-the-Box or Convoy rides for US. We were too busy getting dizzy on the roller coasters; The wooden one, "The Great White", really jerked me around! The "Great N'oreaster" does lots of corkscrew turns, and our feet hang down; (no floor!).

Thanks for joining us (vicariously!) in Wildwood today....

Ahh, Ellen, this thread brings back nostalgic memories. I loved the, "boardwalk". Any boardwalk when I was younger and lived in NYC. Actually, I met the first, Mrs. "twinwillow" in Wildwood in 1965.

That's funny, as 1965 was the first year my family started taking us down to Wildwood! I was a very young gal at the time. (6 years old!)

We lived 3 hours north, so it was a real treat going down there.
Nowadays I'm only 35 minutes north... (I go there mostly for the nostaglia, whatevers' left of it, anyway) (that Wildwood "feeling")

As usual, great report. Very colorful pictures.

I'm really not a Wildwood person, but last time I was on that boardwalk, it was deserted with one store open (and couldn't find a bathroom! Aarrghh!) in January.

Nice little report, and yes, free is good. Scott seems nice, too! My favorite pictures are of the guy cooking the burgers on the beach (I would've just ran down and grabbed one, yelling, "Emergency!"), and the views from the Ferris Wheel. That's about the only ride I like to go on. I hate quick and scary rides!

What do you mean? There's burnt chicken, a hot dog with a packet of mayonaise next to it and a fudge bar. Oh, I see your point...

But seriously, I do love the beach photo aspect. Reminds me of childhood. Maybe a new category for "non Roadfood trip reports?"

I really loved this trip report, Ellen--thanks! Haha, in the 8th picture in the report, there's a guy standing right in the center of the shot - and he looks a lot like one of my brothers!! So much so that I actually emailed my brother to ask him if he'd gone to Wildwood on Monday! .

Some very nice shots from the ferris wheel, btw.

Definitely no bathrooms open in January on the boards. (but even in the summer there seems to be "stall shortages", often waiting lines)
In the off-season, I recommend using the bathroom in the Super Wa-Wa convenience store on the way into town.

Scott also joked about those guys cooking the burgers...
about me running down to that grill! (nothing like fresh off the grill).... (as the burgers were just "okay" to begin with, so anything extra (like extra "hot") would help.)
I said "maybe if I throw the guy a 5 dollar bill"

YES, Scott is definitely a super nice guy. He's another one of my ex-boyfriends who is like family to me, now.. (I've got a small stable)
    Yes, ladies he IS available!

More SCENERY than Roadfood in this report ! (90/10 ratio ?)...
thought I could slip this one thru, but, no, got busted by Travlin' Man...

I did NOT want one of those 99 cents Snow White Burgers. Last time I had one a few years back, and it tasted worse than a H.S. Cafeteria burger.
Almost as small as a White Castle Burger, but DRY.
And the hot dogs are Ballpark franks, saw the package..

I DID stop on the boardwalk at night for a PRIME RIB SANDWICH ($9.95) from a new "Crab Cakes and Prime Rib" stand , (it's called "Another Place". They have a sister restaurant called Bubba Deans in Mt. Ephraim, NJ, near Philly)
It was a real good sandwich, and I'm glad Scott took up my offer to help me eat it, cause I was'nt even hungry in the first place!

In the world of boardwalk pizza stands, I don't know if this crab cake/prime rib place is going to make it. (Take out only).

But no pics of the prime rib, as I had just brought my camera & beachbag back to Scott's car. So you'll all just have to go with the VERBAL on this one!

And so are you, Tarragon, Davy, Leethebard; great reading your input and reminiscing!!

Hey, most of my reports DO have lots of Roadfood pics.
So I'm allowed a "beachy" or other type Report every once in awhile, right?!? At least I still put up some PICS! (I did'nt slack off THAT much!)

Thanks for those great pictures as usual. So, is Scott a dealer too? If so, what game does he deal? Nice of him to invite you and nice of you to bring us all along. You're the best Ellen! Keep up the good work. The beach looked great. The NJ shore is a special place.

That was really a nice gesture on the part of his firm for their employees, even if they blew the menu. I have to tell you, I, too, am a bit surprised they didn't serve any roadfood type fare. You'd have thought, especially with young families, that someone would realize roadfood stuff would have been perfect in that setting. Instead, they chose to serve burgers, hot dogs and grilled chicken? I don't get it either.

You would've thought they could've gone all out and trucked in some authentic Arthur Bryants BBQ or something! But instead we had to settle for good 'ol boardwalk/picnic food...(LOL)

(just as well, as I've been reading some downhill alerts for that Arthur Bryants place. I'll take my Austin BBQ Roadfood instead!)

I tend to gravitate towards fellow poker dealers, as well as poker players. And more recently Roadfood.com pals. But Scott is actually a casino buffet waiter. He works at Bally's Wild West in the Virginia City buffet.

Always great to hear your 2 cents, as well as all your kind words, Baah Ben. You ROCK!

Update: it was NOT my brother, although he checked out the pic and did a double-take, admitting that it did look like him. He was happy to see that some things had not changed in Wildwood from his partying days, btw.

    Thanks Ellen!
