Ever since Dec. 2004, when the D-Melt was yanked out from under our feet, I've compensated my pizza fixes with Tombstones, the occasional California Pizza Kitchen Sicilian, and at times a thin and crispy from Dominos not because Domino's Pizza is good but because dunking their thin in ranch is the closest we can get to the taste of the D-melt. All in all, it's been a strange but sometimes enjoyable journey. It's also been an empty journey. I could go to all the quality pizza sit-down places....I could make my own pie at home time after time.
But in the end there is an emptiness that can only be filled by the D-Melt.
I will never forget watching an early season Skins-Cowboys MNF game that year when it was introduced. The commercial spread like wildfire, the timing was so perfect and the idea so brilliant. Talk around all water coolers the next day was not about the football game but about the damn DoubleMelt pizza. When that ad came on, people were dropping their beer and looking at each other like "DID YOU SEE THAT????"
It was the first time I had completely lost interest in a Redskins-Cowboys game. All I could think about was how epic the Doublemelt was going to be.
I remember getting the box and carrying it to my sled as if I was taking a newborn baby home from the hospital.
Week one of the nfl season....we will see. Maybe they should break it out on the Monday Night game on 9/11 to boost the nation's spirits. The timing could not be more perfect. If they don't, they will regret it.
