Haven't seen any mention of the Cheese Shop.  I once drove three hours just to get a sandwich on their french bread with extra house dressing.  Get sandwiches to go and have a picnic along the James River.

Also, The Carrot Tree Kitchen right near Jamestown Settlement has a chocolate frosted chocolate cake to die for!  Incredibly rich.  They also have lots of sandwiches and salads, though I've never tried those.  I go right for dessert.

Thanks for the reminder on the Cheese shop - I have been there once and the bread and cheese were wonderful.

And thanks also for the recommendation.

I know this thread is old, but maybe someone will find this useful.

If you go right down the road, on I-64, to Newport News there is a place called Hoss's Deli. It is off of J. Clyde Morris. It is a biker bar with really good food,  cheap drafts and live music. On Wednesdaym they have what is called hooker night. Their seafood platters are called hookers and they are usually $20, but on this night they go down to $10.

They also do a french dip on friday that is awesome. Have to get it early because thy run out early sometimes. The 34 oz draft beer, known as a fatboy, is only 5 bucks. Another new menu item that is phenominal is the beef nachos. Come hungry if you get this because they do no skimp on the portions at all. Me and my friend shared the beef nachos and couldn't finish it, although that might of been because of the 4 fatboys apiece we had partaked in.
