Wine in a box

Ok, call me tasteless but I very much like my Franzia Chardonnay in the 5 litre box. Tastes good, to me at least, and if you got a wine jones going, ya dont have to keep screwing around with corkscrews...any other box fans out there?

The wine you get in a box from Franzia and Almaden is at least as good as and probably better than the average 750L bottle you might have bought 40 years ago. Time was when we sneered at the boxes, but it is now our everyday wine, and the better stuff is saved for once a week meals and special occasions. Cheers, John

Our everyday white is Black Box Chardonay in the 2 L. box. It's dry but not oakey. We have also been very pleased with Target's Sauvingon Blanc in the 2 L. box.

In college we would buy Franzia, but we called it Wine in a Bag. Because we use to take the bag out of the box and put it on our shoulder so that we could just "Smart Tab" it right in our mouth. Classy! Then, depending on where we were, we would staple the empty bags to the wall.

I'm like the Franzia in box, much to my husband's chagrin. He is in the wine business. He works at a wine shop where there is no boxed wine whatsoever. So, when we go to a regular liquor store he buys his beer, etc. and I grab my box of wine. He teases me and tells me to walk 10 ft. behind him in case he runs into one of his clients or reps.

For box wines I prefer Almaden to Franzia; for some reason the Franzia gives me a headache. Perhaps someday we'll see Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake as spokesmen for wine in a box. Brad

At our house, we drink both box and glass jug wine. The expensive stuff is saved for elegant meals!

Haha braunsteinm. In college, my friends and I did the same thing. We called them space bags for some reason.

Love this thread!! If you look carefully at any of my Boundary waters camping trip photos from the mid 80's on, you will see my trusty box of Franzia! it's very similar to the " where's Waldo " game!!! Fabulous! Dawn

Target sells wine in a box but not in Minnesota. The smaller of the two wine boxes they sell fit two deep perfectly in our overhead RV shelves so they are great for traveling and conserving space.

I think their precursor was the Bota Bag, all the rage in Cal. in the 70's!

I simply cannot drink wine-in the 90s i was a wine buyer for an upscale resort-and my wine seller suggested I take an over the counter medicatian to sell said wine.I apparently am allergic to the nitrates in grapes....

There's an article in this week's New Yorker Magazine about Fred Franzia. One interesting point is that the Franzia in a box is no longer owned by Franzia - it is owned by some large Wine Group. On the other hand, Two Buck Chuck and similar offerings are Franzia's big thing. Cheers, John
