X1, leave them in the refrigerator overnight.

Buddy, those Hungarians might be a great app or a tasty dessert but "plain" presumably pork brats are what the competition is all about. Just about every butcher listed has flu-fru brats many of which I buy all the time. I mean don't they make wild rice blueberry brats (a real option) in Germany?

I agree about the decision to keep the competition/tasting to regular Brats!! I do however like some of the "Foo-Foo" flavors myself. We bought some of Usingers Garlic and some of the Cajun flavored Brats on our July Trip. After trying them both I must say I like them both a lot. The Cajun were not nearly as spicy as the Jalapeno/Cheese Sausages we got in Texas...or the Hot Links made by Hillshire Farms in most grocery stores. BUT they are very good!

      Bratwurst Fans!

The very best Bratwurst WORLDWIDE is the original "Thüringer Rostbratwurst", no other Bratwurst can top this german delicacy.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thuringian_sausage

Trad. served in a crispy bun, with the typical "Born" mustard...

      Born Senf (Mustard)

Now very hungry regards from Germany

        Question -

I don't deal with frozen brats, so  - when do I take them out of the freezer so they'll be fine in time for this shindig? Day before? Night before? Morning of?

I'm liberating mine from the freezer on Friday.

I've been checking out your Examiner reviews and now I have a couple new "must eats" in Milwaukee.  Great job!

Good looking sausage.  I would be a great addition to our roster of encased meats.

No problem on the garlic brats.  I bought enough of Schmeisser's regular brats to compete, and the rest can be reserved for the feast afterward.

Just returned from a run out to Oconomowoc, and boy are my legs tired.
Picked up a couple pounds of fresh brats from the Sausage Haus if you have room for more.  They're better known for their hot Hungarians, but the brats are more than decent.

Add two more varieties to the list.  I managed to stop by Schmeisser's Homemade Sausages in Niles, Illinois today and picked up a pound of their standard brat, which they say compares to a Sheboygan, and a pound of their Hungarian version with a little more kick and a good shot of garlic.  Four links each.  Should be enough for an entry and maybe a couple more for the chow down after.

                Buddy

As a very interested Side Bar Observer who would love to be there, (Have you checked Airfare's lately), I thought the competition was for WISCONSIN BRATS ONLY. Since you've excluded Ohio Brats---- Shouldn't you also exclude Illinois Brats from the competition just to be fair?? You can serve them, they just should not be entered in the competition.

                Foodbme,

The ticket I sent you never showed up?????

You make a good point on the "Wisconsin bratwurst" issue.  That was my original intent, but once Davydd and Michael_Hoffman showed their local pride, it was hard to restrict the entries.  It would also be a hollow victory if I excluded the favorite brats of the knowledgeable folks here at Roadfood.com.

It was also my original intent to sample 6 or 8 different sausage makers.  We are now up to over 3 times that, this event has taken on a life of its own.

I expect some big surprises on Sunday.  I did a mini-taste-off of 3 brats this past Sunday, two that I was familiar with and one that was new to me.  The unfamiliar brat was the winner with my family.  One of the familiar brats had beer added to the recipe by the sausage maker.  We could taste something that didn't seem right in that brat and it was the beer.  I never would have guessed that.

                Jim

I'll have room for them Chuck.  I've expanded my bracket to 27 entries and I can squeeze in more brat brands if they show-up.

I'm going to try to get another one up tomorrow. Can't decide if I should write up Glorioso's, or start my 2-part (that may turn into 3-part) article on El Tondero.

I'm afraid that y'all are going to have to have this little shindig without me. A personal matter has come up and I'm not going to be able to make it. Hope everyone has a good time.

Al is right. I've eaten Bratwurst in Wisconsin, I've eaten Bratwurst in New York, and I've eaten Bratwurst in Germany.

People in Germany constantly debate who makes the best Bratwurst. But there are so many German immigrants who started making Bratwurst in Wisconsin that it is fair game to pick the best bratwurst made in Wisconsin.

Thank You for the clarifications. There are a few places out here that make their own sausages, including Brats. One is "The Pork Shop" in Queen Creek AZ, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxOtqcFXYdo
Another is "Midwestern Meats" in Mesa AZ (He's orginally from IA),  http://www.midwesternmeats.com/index.html
                                Two in Phoenix
"Schreiners Sausage" has been around for over 50 years http://www.schreinerssausage.com/products.asp

"Stanley's Sausage" also has been in business quite a while http://www.stanleys-sausage.com/home.html

I wonder if you got any of them from here: http://www.onmilwaukee.co...elmurphyspackbars.html In the heart of Chicago-St. Louis-Arizona Cardinal Country.

I know of Mabel Murphy's but I don't think they make their own Sausage. They get it from some other source.

I'm going to pick up some brats from Loehr's in Campbellsport also.

"Loehr's Meat Service has the distinction of making the "world's longest brat," according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Loehr's made the record bratwurst for the Campbellsport Fire Department's annual Fourth of July picnic celebrating the department's 100-year anniversary celebration in 2004. The 48-foot brat was loaded into the 48-foot bun (made by the Fin 'n Feather of New Prospect) on a semitrailer and transported along Campbellsport's Main Street to Fireman's Park with police escort."

David in NYC-  The behavior of the Germans when talking about Brats (and sausage in general) reminds me of the American deep interest in all-things Barbeque !! I don't think this is a "Bad" thing !

I hope the Brat-Eater/Judges can stomach the task at hand !!  (All Puns Intended !! ) Have fun folks !

That's like who makes the best hot dogs. Some people just don't like Chicago Style or New York Style or slaw dogs or Coney Island or chili dogs, so it's all subjective. Your brat may be better by itself, but mine is better with sauerkraut, and hers is better with mustard, etc. etc. etc. Let's all just be glad that this wasn't scheduled on Packer-Bear Sunday and that the Cubs, Sox, and Brewers are all playing badly so more of us could make it and have fun.

I'm in, as is my wife, Big Beautiful Mich, and my mother. Should I bring some more brats from Lakeside Super Valu (assuming some of you choose them, it's located where WI State Routes 75, 50 and 83 meet in the bustling metropolis of Salem, WI) or something else? The only thing I positively cannot bring is Jesse, since the church we're attending that Sunday doesn't allow dogs, even when they're best dogs like Jesse is. I just need an address.

I know of Mabel Murphy's but I don't think they make their own Sausage. They get it from some other source.
Sorta like their Packer stuff, I presume.

                                          Gyp - Outstanding!  I can't wait to try Loehr's and Eden's.

MFL - Two dozen City Bakery hard rolls were picked and are patiently awaiting the application of butter.

nocarolina - What are we going to do with all the Key Lime Mousse without you here to consume it?

BUM - More brats????  Have I said no to anyone, yet? WWbbD?  Stay tuned for a PM with the address.

Missed it by just one week.  Love to see the photos from that gathering!

I got four watermelons. It just isn't a picnic without watermelon, at least not at Chez Mich, but BBM and I have no kids, unless you count the dog and the cat, so we do without all too often.

Bob, I'm terribly sorry you won't be making this trip; hope your personal matters clear themselves up easily.

As for the Key Lime Mousse, it'll be the supreme sacrifice, but I will suck it up while I suck it up (the Key Lime Mousse, that is).

The brat taste-off is NOT today.  It is on Sunday.

Don't forget lawn chairs.  The seating here is limited.

I added 2 more brat entries.  One is in the Stern's 500 Things book.

Anyone needing directions should send me a PM.

The preferred preparation method for Thuringian sausage is roasted over charcoal or on a grill rubbed with bacon.
