Mrs MFL called to say she (and me) are in for Jalapeno Loco.

Mmm, Chiles en Nogades (poblano pepper stuffed with pieces of pork, apples, pears, plantain, peaches, and almonds. The sauce which tops the stuffed chile is made with cream, fresh Mexican cheese, and walnuts. Topped with fresh cheese sauce)
or  Shrimp Gabardina (Large shrimp stuffed with chihuahua cheese wrapped in bacon sauteed in a tequila sauce served with green peppers and rice topped with a delicious white sauce).

What to have, what to have? Or one of the seven home made moles?

Have fun, y'all! I got five hours of sleep last night and I'm draggin', so it looks like a light dinner and a long sleep for me this evening. Wish I could be there!

I think, between the sides that ppl bring, plus whatever fabulousness (it's a word - I said so) Bobbi is making for dessert(s), your wife will have PLENTY to eat.

X1, you forgot my dish, the "Insane shrimp".
They were shrimp swimming in a cream, habanero and blue cheese sauce served with some white rice and some fantastic special refried black beans. They were insanely hot, unbelievably delicious. I hope they put these on the regular menu and I like to see if this dish and the bacon wrapped shrimp could be somehow combined. What a nice meal, as always, served up best with a table of friends.

Yes, the Brewers are home that weekend but the game on Sunday starts at 1:05; I already have tickets and will miss the majority of the bratwurst contest.  OTOH I'll be grilling some in a setting far more traditional than JRP's yard: the Miller Park parking lot.

This sounds SO right up my alley, that I am saddened to say I have Ravinia tix for Sept 6. SOmething special that's been on the calendar since opening day....
                            Ah well...

Here's the deal, for several years I've been vowing to taste test all my favorite Wisconsin bratwurst to determine the best.  I'm going to do it this year, and you are invited to join the taste test and cast your vote.

If you have any other favorites, nominate them and bring them along.

I picked up some Sheboygan brats and German brats (3 of each) from Christman Meat Co. in Spooner and they're wrapped in butcher paper and in my freezer.  I had hoped to get some brats from Roscoe's Country Sausage (Phillips) but the store was closed when I went by.

                                B_O,

Have you tried both Christman varieties and have a favorite?

I'm still trying to envision how the taste-off will work.  There is no way to cook enough sausage for everyone to judge everything.

I'll probably do a round-robin with three rounds.  The preliminary and semi-final rounds will have 3 or 4 brats going against each other, with the final being a head-to-head taste-off between the two favorites.  I'll let my guests take turns judging.  I'll have to cut up the brats into pieces and let them try one of each to pick a favorite.

So far the following have been purchased for the event:
                                • Usinger's
                                • RJ's Meats
                                • Kramarczuk's (courtesy of BuddyRoadhouse)
                                • Christman Meat (courtesy of Brad_Olson)
                                • Mystery Brats

For those of you bringing brats to the taste-off.  Please let me know what you buy when you get it.  I'll keep the list updated to avoid duplications.  You should bring 2 pounds of each brat that will be in the taste-off. We are also doing a separate poultry brat taste-off.

                                Jim

I recently had some artisan (they raise their own pigs) bratwurst, Wilson Farm Meats out of Elkhorn.
Perhaps they weren't made properly but imho the meat was too finely ground for a proper brat, so I will not be bringing any of these.

Sorry JRP, all I did was pick them up and throw them in the freezer.  I had hoped that Rondeau's in Cable made their own but apparently they don't, so we ate Klement's while we were there.

Sorg's is on the way to Burlington so if I'm able to make it to Fred's on the 15th I'll pick up some of their brats.

I have just relocated from Colorado Springs to Denmark, WI - - unfortunately, I won't be able to make this event, but I will look forward to possibly joining the Milwaukee crowd sometime in the future.....

I am enjoying all of the new (to me) foods that I am finding in the markets, and the joys of having real bakeries and butcher shops is so exciting....  Now if I could only find a decent Chinese restaurant....  COS was a wasteland - - there were some 'okay' places, but after 25 years in Hawaii, I guess that I just couldn't find something that appealed to me....

I have just relocated from Colorado Springs to Denmark, WI - ....

                                                    Welcome to Wisconsin.
                                                    I have friends in Maribel/Denmark.
I love Konops Meats in nearby Stangleville, the Friday chicken and fish at Susters Arcade across from the bank in Denmark but most of all the burgers and other sandwiches at Basil's II in Fontenoy. I think I'd rather have the somewhat modest but charcoal grilled cheeseburger from Basil's II than any other hamburger anywhere. It's my desert island burger. Make sure you try some booyah, it's a sort of chicken stew that is a staple of local fundraisers. If you like summer sausage, you may want to venture to Newton and Whitelaw. In early fall, keep your eyes out a Kermis, a sort of autumn celebration with lots of unique dishes.

I can't wait until Labor Day.  Time to make a bratwurst run to Mars Cheese Castle at I-94 and Hwy S/aka Hwy 142 in Kenosha.  I'll get my brat on a toasted roll with brown mustard, kraut and a side of hot German Potato Salad.  Here's a hint: stop by the bar and enjoy sharp cheddar cheese spread with crackers on the house.

mamaduck43 - I know folks in Denmark.  There is not much going on up that way, about the only people beinghired are nuclear workers and professional football players.  I'll ask some of my Green Bay friends where the best Chinese is there.  I'm surprised that MFL didn't tell you about the Fortune Restaurant in the Milwaukee area.  There is a lot of Roadfood in that area of WI.  The chain restaurants haven't made East of I-43.  There are some on the far west end of Manitowoc, but they've (to my knowledge) missed Two Rivers, Kewaunee, Algoma, and the entire Door County peninsula.

The Brat Taste-off Entries now include:

A woman who works in my employer's Green Bay store is partial to No. 1 China (I think that's the name).

I'd say at the very least Chuck deserves credit just for putting up with X1...

JRP, be sure you bring a cooler next Saturday so I can hand over some brats from Sorg's and Jacobson Bros.  If I think of it I'll get some at J.L. Richards in Oregon, too.
