We'll be in Worcester MA for a couple days. Other than George's Coney Island, does anyone have any suggestions in the general dining vicinity? Thanks.

Boulevard Diner (I believe on Broadway or Southbridge) is reputed to have good Italian food. It's been a while since I was last there, but the diner is always in pristine shape. DaveM

You've picked one of the most underrated cities in New England. I love it dearly. The Boulevard Diner is on Shrewsbury Street, which is home to some great restaurants. Porto Bello is my favorite for evening dining. It's not fancy at all, but really intimate. Like if your mom decided to open an Italian restaurant. Try anything with the peppery marscapone sauce. Mmmm. Coffee and dessert afterward at Caffe Dolce (just two doors down) is always fun. For the best meatball sandwich ever, try Vincent's. It's the coolest barroom I've ever visited. A real neighborhood joint with an outstanding jukebox. Busy at night, but in the afternoon it's great. Worcester is home to some of the best diners in America. Try the Parkway across from the Boulevard. Doesn't look like much of a diner from the outside, but the breakfast is great. I recently at at the Corner Lunch which is very good, as well. Don't miss a visit to Ralph's Chadwick Square diner, either. It was recently purchased by the owner of Vincent's and the food has gotten better. I had a portobello mushroom sandwich there that was very good. Good luck!

Yes, the Boulevard! It's on Shrewsbury Street. There are also several other great Italian places on Shrewsbury Street, including Portobello Restaurant (homey Italian), Cafe Dolce (coffee and desserts), and D'Errico's Market. There's also Ralph's Diner, which is under new ownership and has live music upstairs at night. The new owner of Ralph's also owns Vincent's--a small smokey bar with the BEST meatball sandwiches around and great jukebox selections. Lisa

Not only that, but he knows not to bother coming home from Vincent's without a meatball sub for me! Lisa

You guys have given me great ideas for my next visit. 4 chili dogs and 2 drinks for $7 at George's Coney Island on my last trip. What a deal. Unfortunatly (or fortunatly)on a previous trip I continued from Auburn down Rt. 9 to Framingham and stopped at Kelly's Roast Beef (attached to Jordan's Furniture), and bypassed Worcester altogether. DaveM Now that they have several locations, is Kellys officialy a chain? I have eaten at both the original and the one inside Jordan's (a Berkshire Hathaway company). The food is, I think, the same, but the Jordan's location is slick, corporate and up to date. Is it still roadfood?

Unless they're opening up a Kelly's in LA, NY, DC etc, then only a handful of Kelly's in the Boston area is far from a chain

The Sole Proprietor is great for seafood. The Gold Star Restaurant on Gold Star Blvd. has great homemade corned beef hash. There is a bagel place across the street from Gold Star, I forget the name (New York Bagels?) and they serve a great homemade pastrami hash, very inexpensive. Cactus Pete's is a good alternative to the Longhorn Chain for steaks, etc.

Wistah, I think you are writing about Arthur's New York Bagles. When I am in that area, it is always hard to decide between Arthurs and Gold Star. Gold Star is bigger yet it is often harder to find a seat there than at Arthur's, so that is often the deciding factor for me. I hate to wait.

I saw in the paper today that at the same time it was celebrating it's 25th birthday, it found that it had been rated as one of the 10 best seafood restaurants in the country. The Sole is very good, even wonderful, but as I have wondered in these threads before, I am very suspect of any small list for a country this large. If one of us were to be given a charter jet for 2 weeks, an expense account and the 10 best list, I wonder what the result would be? I expect that a few of us might displace one of the "10 best" with one or more fish shacks. It is fun to think about.
