Worcester Massachusetts area Sat, 07/11/09 10:49 AM (permalink)
My wife and I are taking our daughter to Worcester Massachusetts in a couple weeks for a soccer tournament. I was wanting to know some good Roadfood Places to eat as I am not very familier with the area.

Thanks for any help!

Northbridge high football may go to Coney Island, but they won't be getting any dogs on Tuesday. Open everyday, except Tuesdays. Usually until 8pm.

IMO, Five and Diner is really just another chain - same class as perhaps Denny's.  For a real diner with excellent, standard diner fare breakfast & ambiance, consider the Kenmore Diner at 250 Franklin St (under Rt 290, near Grafton St.).  We make it a point to stop there whenever we drive through Worcester.  It's always been consistently excellent.

Crown Bakery on Gold Star Blvd is a must too. It has been voted "best of Worcester" more than any other place in any business. I saw the obit for the founder a few moths ago. He had been retired in Sweden for years, and had learned his trade on high end cruise ships.  Crown is a little expensive by Worcester standards, as it is a scratch bakery, and always fresh.

It is less than 1/2 mile from the Gold Star restaurant, so you can do both places on the same visit.

I'll agree with tmiles, Gold Star is worth checking out.

I second this recommendation! Last time I was there, I literally loaded up my trunk with baked Scandinavian goodness. I swear, I must've left a cardamom-scented trail from New England to the mid-Atlantic that day.

I stopped by the Miss Worcester Diner a few days ago. I had not been there in over 50 years when I used to deliver eggs with my grandfather. This diner was once the "model", parked just a few yards from where it had been built. Because it has always just "been there" without formalized ownership, it went through an ugly ownership dispute a while ago.  A banner says it was recently named best in the nation by a tv show.

I had a simple breakfast special.......2 eggs, hash browns, toast and coffee  or juice for 3.50, so it is hard to judge the place as really "special". For me, it was just the as to be expected excellent with good service. I'd go again, but if I lived 2 states away would not make a special trip.

UPDATE... A few days later I returned with my daughter. She got a stack of French toast layered with peanut butter, fluff, Nutella and bananas with a spray of whipped cream on top. She was very impressed, but could only eat about half. I think it was $7 or $8, so not cheap, but an eating adventure. One day I'll get a digital camera............

                                My favorites:

                                - 111 Chophouse. More of a fine dining establishment, but they serve excellent prime sirloin, filet and Wagyu steaks.
                                - Egg roll Lady and Fish Shack. Open Thurs - Sat. Great fish and chips. Egg rolls are great as well :).
                                - New England Roast Beef. Not quite a north shore roast beef sandwich, but the best you will find this far from the coast. Soups are excellent.
                                - Regatta Deli. The standard Regatta club is their trademark.
                                - Lou Roc's Diner. Comfort food. These guys are HEAVY on the butter, so be prepared and take an extra Lipitor.
                                - Gold Star Restaurant. This place defines a Worcester Diner. Lighter fare than Lou Rocs.
                                - Tacos Acapulco. Excellent Mexican fare, wonderful chile relleno's. Try to hit it on off hours as the service is wicked slow during busy hours.
                                - Min's Wok. This place is friendly, and clean as a whistle. Good Chinese takeout.

Hope you're not looking for pizza. If you are, you're SOL. Worcester is peppered with the worst pizza joints on the east coast.

I'll second the Miss Worcester Diner - they have a bigger than average menu and daily specials - a dizzying array of unusual options for French Toast, pancakes, and omelettes. I had the "Big Mac" omelette which was very different and very good.

Also around the corner from Miss Woo is the Corner Lunch, another classic diner. Service here was more friendly and quicker than at Miss Worcester.

Annie's Clark Brunch is also very good, nice people, not fancy by any stretch just solid diner food and CHEAP. they have a great homemade spicy beef hash. And they have served homemade salsa in response to my request for hot sauce.

Hi, I'm not sure if this place is a little too far away from the Worcester for you,
but there is a place in Uxbridge, off of 146 (Exit-1 to 146a) called Baker Boy Town Grill Diner.
The own are Greek, so there is a little bit of Greek style to their food.
Sorry if this is a little out of the way for you.
